AFL fan banned for touching Pickett during Tigers' game (msn.com)

Interesting.

"We love fans in our game, and they're so critical to our game, but our players should never ever be touched when they're on the football field," McQualter said.

So just out of curiosity what happens to the players when after scoring a goal they run along the fence and get all those hand slaps? Just a question for the AFL...

Think it depends who's doing the initiating. When I read that my mind immediately jumped to James Hird and I think that moment would have had far less impact if the fan interaction wasn't part of it.

I haven't actually seen this incident with Pickett, was there any malice in it?

No I don't think so. In fact when I saw it I thought was that person a Tigers fan or the opposition and what was that about.

In 2023 we can't have fans touching players over the fence.
It's a workplace,in a professional sport player safety must be a minimum.

The comparison to players & fans post game is apples & oranges, that's their choice.
Never mentioned anything about post game so not sure how that works. My comment was referring to just in game play.

And I agree safety is important in the workplace. Unfortunately we are talking about the AFL and they selectively avoid applying safety in the workplace when it is convenient for them so you never know what they will do or stand for.

Most shocking case of this has to be Monica Seles, apples and Hillsborough, oranges.
Both horrific outcomes.

Fans want to be up close and create atmosphere, tv loves it, and there lies the inherent risk.

Is one a approach better than the other?

Guess we need to rely on human nature, with well intentioned fans outnumbering the other.
