EXPERIMENT OVER: DOCKERS PUT NEW FYFE PLANS ON THE RECORD FOR 2024

The Nat Fyfe forward experiment is officially over.

In an attempt to return the dual Brownlow Medallist to his best, Fremantle will in 2024 allow Fyfe back into the midfield mix as a pure on-baller, a role he revolutionised with his bigger frame.

The 32-year-old, who has only managed 16 AFL appearances in the last two seasons, had been pushed ahead of the ball following the flourishment of Andrew Brayshaw and Caleb Serong in recent years.

But Fyfe has never kicked more than 24 goals in a season and he’ll fit back in alongside the younger midfield duo in 2024. According to Dockers footy boss Joe Brierty, Fyfe is ready to make his mark once again.

“I won’t put a number on how many games he’ll play, he’s obviously had a few frustrating years in recent times,” Brierty told SEN Afternoons.

“All I can say is he’s had a really, really good pre-season. He’s probably had his greatest availability across the pre-season in terms of load he’s done and the footy he’s engaging with and his body feels really good.

“I think when we talk about these older players and how they feel in their own body and own mind, I spoke to Nat this morning and he’s feeling great.

“Really excited about getting in and being available for a few decent hitouts across the pre-season. Obviously we’ve refocused his role to be solely focused on midfield minutes, at times he’ll drift forward.

“I think for him, that gives him the upmost clarity and where he can focus his time, we know he’s a contested beat and a big body and he’s also educating that younger group through the midfield, which I think he’s really enjoying.”

When asked to confirm Fyfe’s position, Brierty replied: “He’s a midfielder. I think he’s pretty excited about that.”

Fyfe will play full minutes in a intraclub match on Friday.

Oh geez.... he is going to be tempting now
How much does this impact on Young's midfield time? Surely Serong and Brayshaw are their main 2 mids with 65-70% on ball which wouldn't leave much mid time for the likes of Fyfe/Young/Jackson/younger mids like Johnson/Eramus to share.

POSITION SWITCH
Max Holmes the defender?

Holmes was used on a wing and through the midfield in 2023 but the 21-year-old spent the entire match simulation across halfback.

A number of sides have been looking to generate pace from their back-half this pre-season and Holmes has speed to burn – as the former hurdler showed by taking out the AFL Grand Final Sprint last year.

Holmes went on a few runs out of defence but was mown down by behemoth Toby Conway at one stage when he got a little too industrious.

But perhaps the most interesting switch was from Conway and Stanley, who swapped between the two teams each quarter.

It was interesting duel and 20-year-old Conway got the points with his follow-up work at ground level and protection of the drop zone at ruck contests, allowing him to grab it out of the ruck and find an option.

The pre-season matches will likely have a major say on who they choose but the gap appears to have closed between the two.

Fortunate to spend some time with Swans management team today. Impressive group with Leon Cameron, Dean Cox, Tom Harley surrounding Horse.

Heeney - training as a full time mid, will provide all day run complimenting inside mids

Midfield - been an area of weakness (contested wins) in the past and looking to see contested poss wins lift with Grundy and Adams in there.

Forwards - first time for a while all forwards fit and training together preseason. Expect Joel Amartey could gain more TOG.

Fit squad - 41-42 training

James Jordon splitting time mid and forward

Callum Mills - felt like he could return earlier than thought, maybe round 6-8. Hard to gauge role for Mills however saw a 20% drop in CBA's last year and many question why played out of position - seems concern of protecting achilles was the driver which was an issue in 2021/22 and given he was better last year was a good call and could be repeated. The burst nature of the midfield role a factor.

Matty Roberts - no extra comments except been excellent on the track. Will he be the half back defensive attacker that many teams are targeting?

Adams and Grundy both enjoying the Bondi beach area, early sunrise, warmer waters and coffee shops open at crack of dawn. Complimentary of Collingwood and similar training standard.

Swans going to be a force this year with all the off season recruitment. Felt well received that Mills backed in as sole Capt given offield injury, suggest high praise of his character and what he brings to the club from a leadership role.

Boy, im glad Swans play round zero because I’m a sucker for “midfield Heeney” and this post would’ve had me getting excited!

Thanks for posting this. Good info.

Can I query "Heeney - training as a full time mid, will provide all day run complimenting inside mids"

Is "complimenting" your interpretation or what was actually said? Don't want to get technical but to me "complementing" means providing something that is missing or assisting the existing set up. Basically that implies that Heeney won't be a full time mid just goes in there when he is needed to top up or help out the full time mids. Heeney has had a high ceiling in the right role but just turns out too many horror scores to make him viable when he isn't in that role. Mind you the bar is set pretty low this year in the fwd line.

Look, I have never been much of an Adams fan but behind the age/injury history ect I do like 2 things.
The fact that he is a fairly priced fwd (In a year with crap fwd options) and that I feel he will have a huge chip on his shoulder/grudge.
If his body holds up (big if) I am starting to like him as an option around F2, I really don't feel comfortable with basically a fwd line full of rookies/250k hopefuls, I see a need for an F1/F2 anchor at this stage.

Seems fairly clear that Swans don't see Heeney as that grunt mid so I'd be assuming ''complimenting inside mids'' means what it sounds like, an outside role when he is in there on occasion.
