So, if there are three playing rookies in the backline come round 1, will people play three rookies? Including one on the field?
Yes

At this stage I am assuming I will be playing a rookie on field - leap of faith required but I am sure we will have an option to start on field.

Remember Ben Nason? In 2010 the pre-season was all doom and gloom with defence rookies. Nason turned up almost at the last minute. Those with the guts to start him were rewarded with a string of games (played first 20 games) and a decent enough average for a defender rookie (averaged 61 up to R10). I don't know what his price was at upgrade time but I assume it was around $250K.

I am trying not to talk myself into a too conservative position in defence and pick a no upside/$480K guy for the sake of if it means leaving out a much better upside prospect in another position.

Interesting question. It may be possible to play 2 on the field with another on the bench plus a donut (eg Saad). Higher risk, but worth considering.
Yep, Good question.

We definitely need 2 to sit on the bench but 3 brings up more questions. You are now comparing a defensive rookie to a mid or a forward rookie? You are now comparing a defensive keeper to a keeper somewhere else on the ground? You are now comparing a defensive rookie to a defensive mid pricer? Dammit PC. I was so relaxed. :)

It looks like we might have a few more options. Saad at Gold Coast, McIntosh at Richmond and Kelly at the Doggies have shown in the NAB they might average about 60 and make some money and I'd be happy with that. If we were comparing Nathan Brown to Taylor Hunt sitting at D6 I think I would take Taylor Hunt. Probably make the same money but Hunt can average 20 to 30 points more and will be an easier jump to a keeper when the time comes. I don't think you could take Nathan Brown in place of a forward or mid rookie.

I see it as FWD premium v DEF premium on the basis that if rookie KPP history is a guide then Hogan (on field in a 3 rookie set up) will only average 60.

Tex averaged 50 and Cameron 60 in their first years.

Then it's say Swan v Houli like I asked in the rate my team thread. Surely Swan wins and you break even on the defence rookie by pushing Hogan's 60 to the bench?

I'm actually quite confident there will be more than 3 Def Rookies named in teams for Round 1.
After 2 games in the NAB we have had:
32 Rookie priced players cheaper than N Brown play a total of 43 games, with an average TOG% of 64%/game
12 Players priced cheaper than $250k, including N Brown, play a total 23 games, with an average TOG% of 79%/game
If we don't get more than 3 out of that lot, I'll eat my hat! :)

What kind of hat is it? Will you enjoy it with a nice side salad? Roasted, grilled or pan-fried?

Care to put the hat up for eating after the first three rounds?? (ie three backline rookies each getting a price rise...) ;)

Yep I currently have a 4-0-4 defence and will stick with it purely because the rest of the team looks good and I don't really want to change it. But this does not include Ablett so if he makes a miraculous recovery and can show me his shoulder is not a problem, somehow ill have to fit him in

Well, no arguments with the stats. After two rounds when rookie swapping takes place, the answer may unfold. I reckon it may pan out similar to two year olds in the ring, had a couple of trials, buy or pass?

I really hope a defender rookie who is startable pops up (because Brown and Hamling aren't).

Means I can squeeze Tom Mitchell in as my 15th keeper.

i can tell right now that we will start the wrong rookies on the field like we always do

if only we automatically got the highest score because there is just to much luck involved for my liking especially with cash leagues and or overall

all it takes is for a 40 on field score and 90 bench score to completely ruin your season especially with all the effort and time we put into our teams

Not telling anyone anything they don't know but Cripps will be in and out of the team according to one of their players. Can't say who but 100% legit, i saw the text messages first hand and he pretty much said stay away. Form is everything with these guys anyway but something to keep in mind..probably doesn't make a diff for me, if named round 1, he's in for me.

Can't fit both him and Newton I think. Locks Newton in for me. 2 210k rookies who are just as likely to score 50s as 90s is too much anyway most likely. One or the other not both, that little tidbit just makes the choice easier.

I know there is 2 weeks to go but my biggest stress line right now is mid rookies. I'm going with 4 premo mids.

Yes there are a number of mid rookies but who should I pick that is going to have some Job S and avoid the vest. Happy to wear a vested rookie at 3/4 time but like you all I don't want a starting vested rookie ideally.

I will only take one 200k mid rookie, so it is down to Newton and Sheed for me.

After that who knows. Heeney, Anderson, Vandenberg and Boekhurst may start but are all starting vest candidates. I like Cockatoo, but starting a $200 k mid rules him out of my budget and I feel this is better spent towards getting the better premo on one of my lines.

So cutting through all the crap who do you think are the cheap (124k and under) mid rookies who will start on the ground?

Griffen & Salem vs Martin & Cripps

Martin + Salem. Salem looks integral at the Dee's. Obviously valued far too much as a ball user to be vested in 2015 - lock.

Martin with pure midfield time listed as a fwd in SC? Lock.

Cripps playing midfield when Carlton are running at 100%? Unlikely.

Griffen not blowing out his calf, or being influenced by the other 22 midfielders GWS have running around? Unlikely.

I'd start Martin in the midfield and have Salem running around in the forwards, then drop Martin back forward later in the year.

Good luck mate!

I totally agree with this, both Martin and Salem in my side atm.
From the x vs y thread but I thought my next question is more relevant to this thread.

Are the forward rookies stronger than the mid rookies this year??

Fwd:
Clark
Hogan
Salem
Karnesis
Lamb

Fwd/mid:
Steele
Caleb
Lambert
Krakour

Mid:
Newton
Cripps
Anderson
Ellis-Yolman
Vandenburg
Heeney
Amon
Boekhorst
Freeman (unlikely)

I just feel apart from Newton those forwards have better JS and prehaps scoring potential. Even if not would the strong forward options justify 1 or even two mid/fwds in the mids. Eg.) Martin/Lambert. Anyone beg to differ?

Edit: thinking of it now 2 may seem a bit excessive but still would like to hear people's thoughts.
