SuperCoach scouting report: All the key intel from the NAB Challenge final round
HAWTHORN v ST KILDA
NAB Challenge, Thursday
— The Hawks dominated everywhere including on the SuperCoach points column with 10 players scoring over 100.
— Jarryd Roughead ($514,700 fwd) led the way with 140. He’s still a key to the Hawks and would be an interesting point of difference this season with most players going for midfield types in attack.
— Jordan Lewis ($588,200 mid) continued his great form of last season and Sam Mitchell ($490,000 mid) is still an A-grader — at a discount price.
— Josh Gibson ($497,200 def) backed up his huge 160 last week with another 108 points, gathering 28 disposals at 89 per cent efficiency. He could be one of the topscoring defenders this year.
— Jed Anderson ($141,000 mid) pushed his claims for a Round 1 start with 15 disposals and 65 SuperCoach points to round out a very promising pre-season.
— There wasn’t a lot to smile about for the Saints but the hype around Jack Newnes ($436,800 mid/def) seems justified. He managed 102 SuperCoach points from 21 disposals at 86 per cent efficiency.
— Jack Steven ($455,900 mid) was the equal-top disposal-winner on the ground (with Lewis) with 33 touches. He also had six clearances and will provide value for his price tag.
— Beware of picking too many Saints. While the likes of Jack Lonie ($117,300 fwd), Ahmed Saad ($151,100 fwd) and Blake Acres ($220,700 mid) are likely to get games, their scores might not make them worth a spot in our sides. That trio scored 33, 48 and 37 on Thursday night.
— At least they got a game which is more than we can say for popular defensive pick Hugh Goddard ($122,300 def/fwd) who didn’t make the final squad. Alarm bells!
ESSENDON v MELBOURNE
NAB Challenge, Friday
— The story of the night was Heritier Lumumba ($417,000 mid/def) who scored his third 100-plus score of the NAB Challenge. Playing a new freewheeling role off half-back and through the middle, he collected 31 disposals and a huge 141 SuperCoach points and will find himself in plenty of backlines. Buyer beware — in eight seasons he has averaged above 80 once.
— Teammate Christian Salem ($185,000 fwd) looks like he’ll be worth his elevated rookie price after 84 points from 20 disposals.
— Aaron vandenBerg ($127,900 mid) was the pick of the Demons’ mature-age recruits with 91 SuperCoach points — now he just needs to be promoted from the rookie list. Ben Newton ($215,000 mid) was solid with 65 from 17 disposals.
— Bomber Shaun Edwards ($123,900 def) is a valid option for our backline bench after another 63 points.
BRISBANE LIONS v GOLD COAST
NAB Challenge, Friday
— The biggest news is there was no Gary Ablett — again! The top-priced player in SuperCoach at $743,600 is no certainty to line up in Round 1.
— In Gaz’s absence midfielders David Swallow ($554,600 mid) and Harley Bennell ($514,600 fwd/mid) stepped up with 125 and 123 SuperCoach points respectively.
— Stefan Martin ($600,200 ruck) and Matthew Leuenberger ($358,000 ruck) showed they could work as in tandem with 108 and 96 SuperCoach points — although Leuey’s score was inflated by kicking the goal to tie the scores at the death
— Nick Malceski ($566,600 def) produced his best performance of the NAB Challenge but do we want more than 101 points from the most expensive defender in SuperCoach this year?
— Touk Miller ($117,300 mid) is right in the frame for a Round 1 debut for the Suns after 13 disposals, six tackles and 77 SuperCoach points, Mitch Hallahan ($317,200 mid) did his job with 19 touches and 77 points and Adam Saad ($102,400 def) is shaping as possibly the best defensive rookie pick this season. His 61 SuperCoach points was his third good return from as many games, now we just need him to get promoted off the rookie list.
— The Lions’ big guns Tom Rockliff ($708,500 mid) and Dayne Beams ($621,000 mid) will both be top picks again, with Beams perhaps providing the better value
— Daniel Rich ($348,300 mid) is enjoying his new role sweeping across half-back, picking up 23 disposals and 78 per cent efficiency for 105 SuperCoach points. He’s a genuine mid-price midfield option.
NORTH MELBOURNE v RICHMOND
NAB Challenge, Saturday
— Will you take the punt on Shaun Higgins ($410,900 de/fwd)? He has played two NAB Challenge games for scores of 136 and 101 (after 15 disposals and four goals on Saturday), but he has a history of letting us down. This one is dividing SuperCoaches!
— Dustin Martin ($534,900 fwd/mid) was very scratchy early but came home strong — not something he has been known for in the past — to register 111 SuperCoach points
— Todd Goldstein ($574,400 ruck) dominated, topscoring with 135. He is worth every cent
— If you don’t want to spend that much, Tiger Ivan Maric ($535,900 ruck) is worth considering. He logged 112 SuperCoach points helped by four clearances and four tackles.
— Trent Cotchin ($546,400 mid) played his first game of the pre-season and had 82 SuperCoach points when he was subbed off at three-quarter time. Can he return to his 116 average of 2012? If the answer is yes he’s great value at that price.
— Speaking of value Kangaroos Andrew Swallow ($500,600 mid) and Daniel Wells ($361,400 mid) are both well under the odds
— Kamdyn McIntosh ($123,900 def)could be the answer to our defence rookie prayers after gathering 17 disposals, six marks and a goal for 77 SuperCoach points. Watch for his name when the Tigers name their Round 1 team.
— We’ll also be looking for rookie Kane Lambert ($102,400 mid/fwd) but he might struggle to break into the team after scoring just 41 SuperCoach points against the Roos.
ADELAIDE v PORT ADELAIDE
NAB Challenge, Saturday
— Port’s midfield stars all scored big with 140 SuperCoach points to Travis Boak ($568,200), 132 to Ollie Wines ($539,200 mid) and 112 to Robbie Gray ($596,900 fwd/mid). All look safe bets.
— The big story for Adelaide was the form of Cam Ellis-Yolmen ($123,900 mid), who had 26 disposals (21 contested) for 117 SuperCoach points. He looks a Round 1 lock.
— Eddie Betts ($426,400 fwd) went big again, scoring 134 after a 160 in NAB one. But he spent time in the midfield which we are unlikely to see once the real stuff starts.
— With Eddie in the guts Patrick Dangerfield ($567,600 mid) played full-forward for much of the day and still scored 120 SuperCoach points.
— Hyped breakout contender Brad Crouch ($508,200 mid) was subbed out early with foot injury, managing just 11 points.
— Nathan van Berlo ($215,600 mid) is playing himself out of many teams, scoring just 49 points from 16 disposals on Saturday.
— Popular rookie selection Nathan Krakouer ($106,900 mid/fwd) ticks all the boxes except actually playing. He didn’t make Port’s final line-up which is not good news for his Round 1 prospects.
WESTERN BULLDOGS v COLLINGWOOD
NAB Challenge, Saturday
— It’s all about the Bont. Marcus Bontempelli ($422,300 fwd/mid) played out of his skin, racking up 15 disposals by quarter-time and finishing with 29, three goals and 131 SuperCoach points. The query is whether he can produce that kind of form consistently in just his second season.
— Jack Macrae ($538,000 mid) could be a unique pick in the midfield. He just keeps finding the ball, gathering 31 disposals at 77 per cent efficiency for 111 points.
— Will Minson ($501,400 ruck) was the top ruckman in SuperCoach two years ago, averaging 114. Last year he had a disappointing season (dropping to a 93 average) but that means he is available for an attractive price if he can reproduce his form of Saturday night — 11 disposals, 50 hitouts and 123 SuperCoach points.
— The Dogs have a couple of rookie options to consider. Former Cat Joel Hamling ($123,900 def)started as a sub but came on early after Jason Johannisen was KO’d. He looked very good down back and finished with 51 SuperCoach points. Caleb Daniel ($117,300 fwd) also started in the sub vest and while he got busy after coming on late, he looks a likely vest candidate if he gets a game in Round 1.
— Scott Pendlebury ($668,800 mid) just did his usual thing: 120 SuperCoach points.
— Dane Swan ($464,500 fwd/mid) didn’t set the world on fire but still managed 88 points from 21 disposals. Hopefully he flicks the switch once the real stuff starts.
SYDNEY v GWS
NAB Challenge, Sunday
— In case you missed the news, Buddy was knocked out before scoring a point. The Swans sayLance Franklin ($537,200 fwd)will play in Round 1 but it’s not exactly the ideal preparation.
— In better news for the Swans, top draft pick Isaac Heeney ($137,300 mid) was super impressive in picking up 12 disposals, two goals and 91 SuperCoach points.
— Heath Shaw ($497,800 def) looks an excellent pick down back this year. He had 21 disposals at 84 per cent efficiency on Sunday for 114 SuperCoach points.
— Ryan Griffen ($530,700 mid) wasn’t as dominant as his GWS debut but battled hard for 20 disposals, five clearances and eight tackles (94 SuperCoach points) and won’t disappoint at that price.
— Tom Mitchell ($405,600 mid/fwd) started as a sub which seemingly put a line through him as a SuperCoach selection. But after being activated he showed his ball magnetism with 18 disposals, six tackles and 68 SuperCoach points in just over half a game. Don’t write him off just yet.
GEELONG v CARLTON
NAB Challenge, Sunday
— Mitch Clark ($155,200 fwd) looks a safe selection after kicking three goals and scoring 97 SuperCoach points without dominating.
— Speaking of safe, jump on Carlton’s Patrick Cripps ($211,400 mid). He was Carlton’s best player with 32 disposals, five clearances and 119 SuperCoach points.
— Sadly we can’t say the same for mature-age recruit Blaine Boekhorst ($132,300 mid) who was barely sighted and scored just 25 points. Based on pre-season form he’s no certainty to be in the Blues’ best 22 in Round 1.
— Harry Taylor ($446,900 def) offers value in defence this season. After a 135 against the Crows last week had scored 99 on Sunday with 21 disposals (91 per cent efficiency) and 10 marks.
— Jimmy Bartel ($549,000 fwd) was eased into the game by starting as the sub, but after coming on he racked up 22 disposals and 92 SuperCoach points in half a game. Fair effort.
— Kristian Jaksch ($264,500 def) has had a good pre-season but if he’s asked to play as a key defender during the regular season as he was on Sunday, his scores will suffer. Standing Mitch Clark, he played OK but had just nine touches and 53 SuperCoach points.
NAB Challenge, Sunday
— Nathan Fyfe ($657,600 mid) was clearly best on ground with 29 disposals, six marks and two goals adding up to 136 SuperCoach points.
— Scott Selwood ($433,100 mid) is available at a discount price after missing the second half of last season with an ankle injury. He would be a risky selection after a very limited pre-season campaign but he showed on Sunday he can definitely find the ball with 25 disposals, five clearances and 117 SuperCoach points
— Much of the interest in this game was in Nic Naitanui ($488,300 ruck). Playing his first game of the pre-season Nic Nat survived the hitout (tick) but his form wasn’t all that flash, gathering 12 disposals, 13 hitouts and 66 SuperCoach points. Is that enough to pick him with confidence this year?
— Bargain Freo defenders Garrick Ibbotson ($342,900 def) and Clancee Pearce ($278,900 def) were both OK, registering 76 and 72 SuperCoach points. Not good enough to demand selection, but not bad enough to wipe from our short-lists. Thanks, guys.
— Tom Lamb ($117,300 fwd) is a likely Round 1 starter for the Eagles, taking Jack Darling’s spot up forward. He did some nice things, picking up 13 disposals and four marks but his SuperCoach score of just 42 sounds alarm bells about his scoring potential.
— The breakout season of Brad Sheppard ($359,400 def) seems to have come to an end. After two outstanding NAB Challenge games he scored 40 points yesterday which is in line with his career average.
