Team PC - Round 5 trades:
Lycett to Tarrant
Hunt to Ryder

:D
I also did the Lycett to Tarrant trade in Round 5 and will target Ryder after his bye to replace Lycett.

Was not really sure where to ask this question but can anyone throw up some names of players that may play their first game in the next 2 to 5 weeks that could be a downgrade target (and end up being reliable bench cover)?

I can still see Dumont getting an extended run for North at some stage (but not sure he would have great job security).

Any of these guys "possibles" - Dalgleish, Laverde, Freeman, Mcbean, Steele
Caleb Daniel should be just about recovered from his knee injury. Might be a chance?

Reilly O'Brien got elevated from the rookie list last week and I think I read somewhere played well in the SANFL last weekend.

EDIT: Also Ciaran Byrne looked okay before getting injured and should be back soon.

Just interested to find who we all think should be the last rookies to be culled? I am personally looking at Cripps and EY in the mids as they have the best scoring ability. Saad might be handy floating around as a D6/7 and/or on the mid bench come later in the season.

The order in which I plan on culling my rookies (barring injuries/omissions) will be based on two main factors:

1. Breakeven/earning potential
2. Bye round

Ideally I won't have any of the R11 bye rookies that are currently in my team, in my team come round 11. So players like Macintosh, Cripps, CEY will be gone before players like Vandenberg, Krakouer and Clark.

Smart trading around the bye rounds can really help your team shoot up the rankings and set yourself up for a strong second half of the season.

Kane Cornes to retire from Port Adelaide Power and AFL after 300th senior appearance
Updated 17 minutes ago

Port Adelaide premiership player Kane Cornes has announced he will retire from the AFL following his 300th senior match against Richmond later this month. Cornes addressed his team-mates and the media in Adelaide on Thursday, outlining the decision to call an end to his career prior to the end of the season was so he could take up a position with the South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service.

The 32-year-old will become the first Power player to achieve the 300-match milestone when lines up against Richmond at Adelaide Oval on May 24. "This is a great football club and I've had some incredible times at Port Adelaide and can't thank the club enough for everything it has given me," Cornes said in a statement. "This is the right time for me to give someone else an opportunity, we've got some terrific young players who will now step up and make their mark on the game."

Cornes was a member of the Power's premiership-winning squad in 2004, the highlight of a decorated career with the club. He made his senior debut in 2001 and went on to become a four-time John Cahill medallist, as well as earning All-Australian honours in 2006 and 2007. Power coach Ken Hinkley said he had no hesitation in affording Cornes the honour of playing his 300th match.

"Kane is a champion of the Port Adelaide Football Club who has given so much over his 15-year career," Hinkley said. "He is a premiership player, four-time best and fairest and the club's games record holder, his record really does speak for itself. "I've insisted that he play his 300th game for the Port Adelaide Football Club as he deserves to reach that outstanding milestone."

Cornes, who was drafted from Glenelg, will front up for the Power against Brisbane at the Gabba on Sunday.

Brent Reilly retires after suffering fractured skull, told to 'never again' play contact sport

Injured Adelaide Crows defender Brent Reilly has retired from football and has been advised by doctors to "never again play a contact sport" after fracturing his skull earlier this year. Reilly underwent surgery on the injury, which occurred when he was accidentally kneed in the head at training in February, and has not played for the club since then.

The 31-year-old was pick 12 in the 2001 national draft and played 203 senior matches for the club, making his debut against St Kilda in Round 15 in 2002. He said his retirement is effective immediately, and he will now take up a coaching role for the rest of the year, mentoring young defenders.

"My medical team have told me that given the impact of the accident and subsequent surgery that they are unanimous in their recommendation that I never again play a contact sport," Reilly said in a statement. "My sole focus at this time is recovery and resuming living a normal life. "While this is still some months away, clearly I will not be in a position to play football again."

Reilly, originally from Victoria, said he intends to explore business opportunities, including involvement with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, focusing on the mind, brain and nutrition. "The Adelaide Football Club has nurtured my growth from an 18-year-old boy who moved here from Victoria to a man in his 30s who now calls Adelaide home," he said. "From playing finals footy to just experiencing the day to day camaraderie for 14 years, by any measure I have had a great ride. "I am very grateful to [coach Phil Walsh] for all of his support and for giving me the opportunity to play a coaching role to the extent I am physically able."

The club's head of football, David Noble, said Reilly had made outstanding contributions to the club both on and off the field. "Brent has been able to evolve with the changing face of the game and the fact he leaves it as a one-club player is an achievement in itself," he said.

Is it wrong that my first thought whenever a player retires or gets injured is usually "how does this effect Supercoach?"

Cornes out opens the door potentially for another cashcow or possibly helps Krakoeur's js slightly.

Sad stuff for Reilly.

How?

He's made the right decision in my mind.
One less player to pick from on their list. I know Cornes is purely a mid and Krakoeur has been playing defence but if Krakoeur's place is in question one week then he might survive because Cornes retired. With the heavy rotations and positional changes in modern footy any non kpp suddenly going from best 21 to not playing again could increase the job security for the other players.

Honestly missed your mention (or the post above) re: Cornes and thought somehow Reilly being out for the Crows helped Port. I'll go back to bed.

Exactly what I was thinking mate. Even though they don't necessarily play the same role it is at least one less number that Krak needs to compete with.

Great careers by both players as well!

Re: Cornes. After doing the hard yards of another pre-season, don't get why you wouldn't see the year out. Port are a top 4 club, why pass up the opportunity to play finals, possibly a grand final, possibly a premiership? Surely 6 months doesn't make any difference to a post-game career in the Fire Brigade. Anyway, good luck to him.

One would get the feeling he has been told he will struggle to get a consistant game

It's highly possible he doesn't love what he is doing for work at the moment, and wants to change jobs. The preseason was just a good way to train for the fire fighting fitness tests.
