Brent Reilly retires after suffering fractured skull, told to 'never again' play contact sport
Injured Adelaide Crows defender Brent Reilly has retired from football and has been advised by doctors to "never again play a contact sport" after fracturing his skull earlier this year. Reilly underwent surgery on the injury, which occurred when he was accidentally kneed in the head at training in February, and has not played for the club since then.
The 31-year-old was pick 12 in the 2001 national draft and played 203 senior matches for the club, making his debut against St Kilda in Round 15 in 2002. He said his retirement is effective immediately, and he will now take up a coaching role for the rest of the year, mentoring young defenders.
"My medical team have told me that given the impact of the accident and subsequent surgery that they are unanimous in their recommendation that I never again play a contact sport," Reilly said in a statement. "My sole focus at this time is recovery and resuming living a normal life. "While this is still some months away, clearly I will not be in a position to play football again."
Reilly, originally from Victoria, said he intends to explore business opportunities, including involvement with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, focusing on the mind, brain and nutrition. "The Adelaide Football Club has nurtured my growth from an 18-year-old boy who moved here from Victoria to a man in his 30s who now calls Adelaide home," he said. "From playing finals footy to just experiencing the day to day camaraderie for 14 years, by any measure I have had a great ride. "I am very grateful to [coach Phil Walsh] for all of his support and for giving me the opportunity to play a coaching role to the extent I am physically able."
The club's head of football, David Noble, said Reilly had made outstanding contributions to the club both on and off the field. "Brent has been able to evolve with the changing face of the game and the fact he leaves it as a one-club player is an achievement in itself," he said.
