ESSENDON youngster Darcy Parish will be out for up to two months after breaking his thumb in the VFL on the weekend.

The midfielder was dropped from the senior side two weeks ago and suffered the injury playing against the Northern Blues on the weekend.

The 20-year-old will require surgery after the setback.

"We'll be checking with the surgeon after he's had that procedure and getting a better feel for how long it's going to take to get Darcy back on the park," Bombers high performance manager Justin Crow said.

"The silver lining there [is] that we can really work hard on Darcy's running ability through that period."

Parish was pushing for a senior recall after averaging more than 30 disposals in his two games back in the VFL but will be forced to wait on the sidelines until later in the season.

It's not the first time he has suffered the injury, having broken his thumb at the start of his draft season in 2015.

In a further blow for the Bombers, a calf injury will see defender Patrick Ambrose ruled out until at least until round 14.

Michael Hurley is expected to be back after missing the past two weeks with a hamstring injury as Essendon faces reigning premiers Richmond on Saturday night.

Youngster Kobe Mutch is unlikely to play again this weekend after a series of headaches in recent weeks.

"There is no evidence of concussion, but we'd like to be conservative, because sometimes it’s difficult to work out exactly why these headaches are coming," Crow said.

"Until they resolve completely for an extended period, we’re going to keep him out of contact training and then also out of matches.

"So we'll be watching him closely this week as to whether or not he becomes available for the weekend."

Fremantle’s challenge of taking on in-form Collingwood just got tougher after Ross Lyon ruled veteran ruckman Aaron Sandilands out of the MCG clash.

Speaking on 6PR radio on Tuesday night, Lyon declared the influential 211cm big man was unfit to take on the Pies.

Sandilands suffered concussion after a heavy head clash with North Melbourne youngster Sam Durdin in Sunday's 28-point loss.

It is unclear how long the 35-year-old will be sidelined but the Dockers have been keen to give him a rest after playing every game so far in 2018.

"He's not in great shape. He's a bit sore and sorry for himself today, so he definitely won't play this week," Lyon told 6PR.

"And then he's been such a great warrior for us that we'll be conservative with him and give him every chance to come back healthy."

Sandilands' withdrawal opens the door for Michael Apeness to possibly play his eighth senior game after being drafted with pick 17 in 2013.

Apeness has been riddled with knee issues at the Dockers and also battled a broken collarbone, but has strung together the past four WAFL games as Peel's lead ruckman.

The 23-year-old is averaging 30 hit-outs, 12 disposals and a goal over the past month and shapes as the likely inclusion ahead of untried teammates for the big job on Pies tall Brodie Grundy.

"We're fortunate, in a sense, that Michael Apeness, Luke Strnadica and Jonesy (Scott Jones) and Lloyd Meek are all available," Lyon said.

"Michael Apeness has had a horrific run with injury over the last four years but he's starting to get a little bit of continuity and the other boys are whacking away.

"We'll have to do it through match committee, but there's probably a few line-ball decisions there."

While many Fremantle fans hoped Apeness could develop into a key forward, his future appears to be in the ruck.

"The reality is he's 200cm, and his size and shape and mobility, he's really a ruckman that might be able to push forward," Lyon said.

"He was really never going to be a key forward, we wouldn't have thought, and I think he likes the ruck and sees that as his best position, so that's where we're grooming him.

"He's been here a while now but he's just had a horrendous run."

Brad Crouch going in for groin surgery.

Expect we won't see him until 2019.

Be a very good footballer if he can get his body right.

Be interesting if he gets the full 30% injury discount for 2019.

Any chance he goes?

FREMANTLE captain Nat Fyfe has sent shockwaves through Brownlow Medal betting markets after a clash with Collingwood's Levi Greenwood that is sure to come under the scrutiny of the Match Review Officer.

Fyfe collided with Greenwood midway through the third quarter at the MCG on Sunday just after the Magpie tapped the ball to teammate Matthew Scharenberg.

RACE FOR CHARLIE Who's leading our Brownlow Predictor?

As Fyfe bumped Greenwood, he extended his left arm away from his body and appeared to catch him high with his forearm.

MRO Michael Christian typically frowns on bumps where players' arms come away from their bodies, but Fyfe will likely escape suspension given Greenwood got up quickly and played on.

With the impact of the clash likely to be graded as low and Fyfe's action almost certain to be deemed careless rather than intentional, he should escape with a fine, ensuring he remains eligible for the Brownlow.

It is also possible Christian could find there was insufficient force to justify any charge against Fyfe.

Fremantle coach Ross Lyon wasn't prepared to comment on the incident.

"I didn't see that. That's not just a throwaway line, but even if I did … unless you're going to pay my fine for the comments on the MRO I'm probably not prepared to comment."

Triple M radio reported soon after the incident that some betting agencies had suspended betting on the Brownlow Medal after Fyfe's clash with Greenwood, with the Freo skipper one of the early favourites for the game’s biggest individual honour.

It didn't look great on first view, looked pretty reckless, may get away with a fine, but could also be worse, will just have to wait for the MRP findings.

MRO found a way to charge Mitchell with misconduct instead of striking, I’d imagine they’d do the same for Fyfe.

Any idea how long Mutch may be out for? If it's weeks, then he won't be useful during the Bye games.

That was last week's injury report. We'll see what comes out of the club tomorrow. They don't know what's causing his headaches exactly, just take all precautions.

Thanks for that Crabby Skills. If they don't know what is causing Mutch's headaches, then that is not a positive sign. He still has some money to make, but not playing during the Bye rounds is not good, hmmm.

Actually, if he does recover soon, do you know if he has a good chance to break into the team?

If they give him this week off too, that'll be 4 weeks rest following the bye. If he is still getting intermittent headaches after that, they'll be worried and I'd think they'd be tempted to give him long-term rest given he is so young. If we hear from the club over the bye that he hasn't had a headache for a fortnight, I reckon he'll be back in the side fairly quickly.

Justice has been served

Richmond star Alex Rance was also offered a $1000 fine for staging
What are you talking about, justice has been served ? All I see being served is another bad decision. Fyfe should never have even been reported mate!

What are the chances Freo rest Fyfe against Carlton next week ahead of their bye, to give him three weeks off to rest his knees heading into the second half of the season?

If by 'bad decision' you mean he didn't receive a harsh enough penalty, then I agree. If you mean he didn't deserve a fine, then I disagree wholeheartedly. I am glad to see he at least copped a fine. It's not a good look.
