I was asking for that lol

Now that Titch is gone for the year, gee it opens up some real interesting options. Do you replace him with Macrae, bring in Gawn or add an extra low end premo elsewhere with the loose change?

Also makes not having a reliable vc/c more challenging as well.

Not sold on Macrae,Gawn or Grundy due to their price tags.

Fyfe and Danger enough ?

I reckon those 2 will be locked in most people’s teams.

I can understand the reluctance with the other 3 for the obvious reasons but it’s tough to imagine the two big boys not being the clear 1 and 2 in the rucks, even if all the historical data we have suggests otherwise.

Injuries and sharing of duties/workload are my concerns for paying that amount of money, especially with Gawn.

I will probably start with Grundy and Kruezer or Kruezer and Longer, depending how I can spread the funds, how Longer looks etc

I wasn’t planning on starting Tich or Grundy but decided last night that I would slot Tich in my team. Now that he is gone, I’m highly likely to go with Grundy as a defensive move and as a C option. I think there is still plenty of risk at his price, but my reasoning is that vast majority will have him and if he gets injured at any stage, then it will be easy to roll down to the next best ruck.

With Mitchell out, who do people think is least likely to be a bad pick of the potential replacements?

I have Fyfe, Dusty and Zerrett. I can see an upside case for most others, but also downside risks with basically all of them.

What are the main downside risks you are seeing?

My main alternatives are Oliver/JKelly/Neale or right down to MCrouch.

I'm not that interested in Macrae due to the high price. I think he'll be quite popular but I'm keen to go against the grain there.

Oliver has the shoulder injury concern with that interrupted preseason but he's no doubt the most solid replacement if fit. Connoisseur had a great breakdown of stats on Oliver somewhere showing that he was just consistently good in wins and losses.

I've never owned JKelly (for better or worse). Might need to do more of a fixture analysis but from memory he was a bit of a flat track bully last year. (@Connoisseur perhaps your useful breakdown of stats would provide some help?) In consideration for me.

Neale doesn't seem to have too much downside - should be an easy 110. Probably just lacks the upside of 115-120 that Oliver/JKelly might have. I guess just some uncertainty at how he might fit in at a new club?

MCrouch is the bargain option who could also push 110 but I'm a bit wary of starting too many at the $550k price point because I'm already so keen on Dusty/Zerrett.

Neale and Oliver assuming they are both fully fit.
Mine as well. I’ve never actually started with Neale in my team so it would be a first on that front.

If Oliver is looking 100% I’d probably prefer him though. Him playing forward so much late last year was a bit of a worry though but I guess it’s possible they wanted to protect him by reducing the amount of bashing and crashing etc

Thanks gents for your thoughts. Agree with a lot of those.

Oliver - ex his shoulder surgeries, I'd just lock and load him. Hard to know how this will affect him though, he did a lot of swimming last year to drop weight and get fit, and presumably isn't doing that at the moment? Averaged over six tackles too ... not sure if this could be an issue. Seems to have been for Rocky and Gaz, but is his issue different to theirs?

Cripps - always seems a risk of missing games given his style, although he's been fairly reliable ex his broken leg. Would be more comfortable if his price wasn't so far above what he delivered before 2018. Not much seemed to go wrong for him last year, so could be priced at his peak?

Will likely go with one of the above as things stand.

Neale - club change adds risk in my view. Potentially more tags, looks like his performance with these has potentially been quite mixed. Nave and durable though, and a c. 110 average for three years is appealing.

Kelly - injuries the main concern, although there's been personnel change too. Maybe amongst the most upside, but also the most downside?

Macrae - very hard to pay that price for someone who has only had one big season. Also averages only c. 20 games a season.

M Crouch - agree that he's the best next cheap option, but I also have Zerrett and Dusty too, and I share similar concerns about loading up on cheaper but potentially mid range keepers.

Reckon Macrae will be widely recognised as the best player in the league by the end of the season. Pretty special player IMO. Definitely comes with risks, but everything points to him establishing himself as truly elite in the near, if not immediate future.

I am pretty sure I recall you saying something very similar this time last year - which was an excellent call.

If he had more history to back it up and/or was more durable I'd lock and load him - he's the obvious like for like for Mitchell in terms of 2018 performance (and therefore price).

What's your take on why he hadn't shown more before 2018? Previous best was 107 in 2017 after hitting 100 in his second year (2014).

I think if you like Fyfe and Danger as a captaincy team (I do) and you're happy to fade Macrae early (I am) then the big advantage is to be had by squeezing in an extra discount premo (ie Blakely plus T Lynch instead of Mitchell plus rookie. I know that doesn't work perfectly but you know what i mean). I think a lot of people will use the spare Mitchell money to splurge on an expensive player they otherwise wouldn't have picked, which opens up an opportunity if you think those expensive players are good to bet against. Of course if you think those expensive players are sound picks anyway then life's good but at the moment going against looks an appealing play to me.

Very interesting you mention this.

I had already wondered whether I was better going for an extra forward, via Danger to the mids.

I've also just reread the high rankings/low rankings thread following your bump, and am wondering whether I should use this as an opportunity to trim some mid pricers from my side - especially if I don't really like the other top mids, as you refer to.

Can I ask whether you have a strong view on Roberton, Hanley, Hanners, Libba or Mummy? I have Westhoff, and would likely pick him even if I had someone else at R2, if that makes a difference.

i am wondering why coaches are off macrae. is it because of his price? his fixture? or can he back it up?

For me its a combo of if he can back it up, & he plays for the Doggies. Im actually leaning towards Bont. Has a 120 ave in him, and im liking him to push it this season. Start 2017 well, and finished 2018 well, hopefully in 2019, he strings it together for the whole yr.

I've been thinking of replacing Mitchell with Fwd/Mid Dangerfield and replacing Dangerfield with another Fwd/Mid, like: Dunkley, Gray, Heeney, TKelly, McLean, Menegola, DSmith, Wingard. And use the change from Mitchell's $700,800 to upgrade another player.
And the Mid Fwd link would be useful.
