Analysis Coaches Choice Awards - Player Ownership Discussion

Well, I was going to start a thread for the 2019 Coaches Choice awards but it appears that the stats are not currently available.

Could it be that there is smoke coming out of the HS servers due to a greater than 100% ownership for some players? Or maybe it is a quantum paradox? Possibly they, like Rick Disneck, "just f%@#ed up".

Whatever the reason, we are going to have enjoy the following quote as a teaser (thanks Couch Coach) until we get real stats (if ever?) to work with.

Welcome to the awards event that every supercoacher wants to get an invite to! The rhyming slang, the annoying nicknames, the gross exaggerations, the sometimes useful stats - the Coaches Choice Awards 2019 has it all.

I will update this (mostly) weekly until the start of the season and I will give a change from week to week. Defenders, Rucks and Forwards include dpp, Mids will be pure mid only.

How are people picking their players? Is it GnR or midprice madness?? Get out your cookie cutters folks, settle in with a cold one and let's go!

Wowee, Goldy and Kreuzer is very POD early on. I think that's the value combo which could get you off to you a good start but might hurt you late if it turns out you need two trades + 200k odd in cash in the rucks to upgrade to Gawn/Grundy. Could work if Goldy and Gawn are both ~110 average rucks so you can just finish with Grundy and Goldy. Alternatively, if Gawn gets rested late but Goldy doesn't as Goldy has no backup.

Dangerfield only 68%, hmmm. I think a lot of SuperCoaches have ticked the auto-select and waiting to pick their team closer to the start of Rd1.

Does anyone know what the highest ownership ever was? I think 68% would be in the ballpark. Once a pick is above 60% I think it pretty much means he's in every serious team.

This is something I have been keeping an eye on for a little while and given Zagbag's post here re PODS I thought I would post the other side of that, those players with high ownership.

I can’t remember a season where those at the pointy end of each position have been as heavily owned as this season. Given we are still 37 days out from the season starting ownership percentages will change and since keeping an eye on ownership percentages most players have had their ownership fall slightly.
This is more of an observation piece than hard analysis, as mentioned I cannot remember a season where the top 5 – 10 players in a line have been so heavily owned.

A question I am posing to the site, what do you think the reasoning behind this is? (It may be normal and I haven’t noticed it before)

My thought,
Greater focus on Supercoach, more resources (articles, podcasts, groups) for players.

I am someone that likes to pick a POD however, picking a POD for the sake of it can be fraught with danger. Looking at the ownership percentages, highly owned players are people I see finishing in the top 10 for that position. The conundrum now is, do I play it safer and pick players that I think will finish in the top 10 for the position, or look for a bolter here and there that has the potential (J Lloyd was that player for me last season and starting with him gave me a big advantage and even my T Lynch selection was looking like a masterstroke after round 3 when he tore the Blues apart for a 180, however, not all selections have a successful end).

I will be interested to follow this up until lockout and see how the ownership percentages fluctuate.

Note – players with DPP status such as Danger I have placed in the likely position they would be selected. Dark green represents a top 5 player and light green is top 10 in that position based on price.

Well done! Interesting to see how it will change, probably based on what new revelations are revealed in the media.

I think because information is so easily and quickly obtained these days (mobile phones). So instead of selecting a player on partial information, these days they get the 'warts and all' to make a more in-depth choice.
I wonder how much influence 'Supercoach Scores' is to blame

Great work ... this the way I like to assimilate info ... along with other considerations of course.

So my initial take is about a third of teams are looking to go:

- 4 deep if defence using a combo of Smith / Robbo ....
- 5 deep in mids using a combo of Libba/Miles/Hanners
- 2 deep in rucks
- 3 deep in the forwards and looking for value
