Darcy in the ruck has an interesting set of fixtures to start the season. He gets Goldy first up but it is at home. Then he has Witts, Longer, WCE (Hickey?), Mumford(if fit), English for his first 6 games. That is not a bad run at all. Then rd 7 it is Jacobs, Nank, TBC and Martin by rd 10. If he had Grundy, Gawn, Goldy and Martin in the first 6-7 games that would make him less appealing but I think he gets a sweet run in the first 6 games bar Goldy first up.

And first game has least impact on price of any, so as good as a time as any to to have Grundy from a value perspective.

Surprised we havent seen Preuss in a lot more teams. It seems obvious enough that the Demons are going to play 2 rucks. Otherwise, why would Preuss go there? The only thing that makes sense is that barring anything drastic, injury, form etc, Preuss will be lining up R1. Gawn has shown he can be semi flexible in his role as a big man, pushes back, been pushing fwd in match sim. They want to preserve the big guy, and who can blame them. They have a bright 4-5yrs ahead of them an he is arguably their most important player.

At $239k he's proved he can avg 63 playing second fiddle.... He's priced to avg 45.... If you string me a story that he can go 80 I'll listen.... And, I'll listen harder if Clarke, Forte, Sweet are not named. Tell me a tale :)

I am not confident Preuss will play most games, and if he does,
I am not confident that he will ruck a lot, why would he if you got one of the best ruckman on the field to help win a game.
I am not confident Preuss will score high, if played mainly as a KPP.
I prefer main ruckman Longer $260,900 then selecting second ruckman Preuss $239,900 to make more money.

Did his PCL very early on last season and I think from memory was semi-rushed back into the senior side coz Sandi broke down...so maybe came back underdone...

Has dropped a lot of weight, puppy fat into muscle, training the house down, all that good stuff yadayada....still not 21 so there'll be volatility and i'd expect to see him fade as the season goes on...but I think he can probably put a string of worthwhile scores together early if given the chance....just whether he gets that chance is the 360k question
Good info Freo, thanks!

Wasn't aware of the PCL but am thinking he's not quite prime age for a ruck all the same. Needs a few more to bulk up and master the craft; sounds like he might take some big steps this season but just doesn't feel like 90+ to me.

As a North man it's a shame we had to lose Preuss but I can certainly see why he left. Goldy is too durable to sell the idea of him being anything more than a break-glass-in-emergency player (as an aside I still reckon we should have traded Goldy to GWS as steak knives to get at Josh Kelly haha :p).

I can see Melbourne's pitch to Preuss like this: You will play AFL, when the setup requires it (I can see having a 2nd, big, bash and crash ruck could be really handy to beat up on Grundy for instance, or to protect Gawn from other double-ruck teams). You'll also play every game if Gawn goes down. Might have been enough?

Given he had a shot at solo ruck last year and averaged 74 is there something I'm missing in the assessment?
Or is he just finally maturing as a player and is ready to make the jump?
Just look at his stats I reckon

He's only played 15 games just 21. Massive unit with another preseason

He's picking Up double digit possessions with 30+ HOs 4-5 tackles. Throw a couple more marks in the mix and he's already there.

Hes already posted a ton or two and a few 90s. assume Some progression of course as well. Pretty impressive stats for a young ruck

I expect Mumford will be back round 3-5 somewhere. Priced at 320, with massive ceiling, has to be part of your overall trade planning. Obviously won’t start him but perhaps means rolling the dice on someone priced 350-450 and having that downgrade as a backup plan.

As a fellow North supporter I shared that view. The head says keeping Preuss and trading Goldy and first round pick to GWS for Kelly would have been a sensible decision. The heart however would have hated it (love Goldy).

I rather have $260,900 Longer as I think he will make more money than aging and battered body Mumford.
Younger Longer played injured for many games and is now having an injury free preseason.

Yeah problem is Goldstein and first round pick is not really close to what we need for kelly. Goldstein at this stage is probably worth a late 1st at best at his age, and ur first pick (9) would’ve put us out of contention for the big 6/7 last year.

Tend to agree. Not sure I would trade Kelly in any circumstance to be honest if I was GWS but it would have been enough to start the conversation given GWS needed a ruckman and Kelly only has a year left on contract.

Anyway all hypothetical now and I happy to keep cheering Goldy on. Maybe have to put him back in my team this year to cleanse my soul. I had him last year and he was poor early (and underscored at time I thought) but it was fun riding his recovery wave.

Report on Perth radio this morning that Darcy rucked almost all of a Freo 40 min match sim last week. Not sure who he had against him. Match sim held in howling breeze. Team A kicked 4 goals to nothing then when they swapped ends it was 3 goals to nothing. Report was that Dockers still set up defensively and got numbers around the ball. Now they potentially have a forward line maybe they need to work out what to do with it. Bewley got a good mention.

No, nothing on any of them but Bennell will get a mention sooner or later. Last I heard he had been eased up a bit as the calf was twitchy. JLT will be the pointer for him.
even if he plays and remain fit till round 1, would you have the confidence to pick him? from what i've seen they could just play him as a deep forward pocket with walters and langdon starting in the forward line but pushing up wing/half-forward often. they seem to have alot more than enough players to rotate through wing/hf (b hill, s hill, cerra, brayshaw, walters, langdon) well i dont know but i certainly wouldn't discount the chance of them playing bennell exclusively in the forward line for him to continue building form and fitness.

For me to pick him he would need to play some serious time in the JLT. If they are going to ease him through that then you could not really have him. At his price and if fit then he is probably a lock. You only need 5 maybe 6 games out of him but it is all about those calves.

Archie Smith $172,300

https://www.afl.com.au/news/2019-02...m=feed&utm_campaign=RSS+feed:+AFL+Latest+News

CHRIS Fagan has again put Brisbane's ruck position up for grabs, and incumbent Stefan Martin is facing a stiff challenge to retain his spot.
Martin has been hampered during pre-season by back and ankle niggles and 23-year-old Archie Smith has pounced, forwarding a compelling case for the number one spot.

With Martin reduced to playing as a forward in match simulation sessions, Smith has impressed, regularly among the best players with his clean hit-out work and improved follow-up at ground level.

When the pair squared off in Friday's intraclub – Martin's first full run in the ruck – Smith got the points, although his more senior opponent will be improved for the run.
