Yeah I’m not down with the Witherden selection. He’s expensive for what I see as a spec pick.

Rich and Witherden were taking most of the kick-ins. Bailey is a good player, however I'd be checking back next year for Supercoach relevance.
Thanks Ken, this is helpful. I’ve had Witherden for some time, so that’s my main reason for interest in this one - a couple of people have indicated they’re not positive on him as a pick.

I’ve looked at him but sharing the ball/points with Laird, Smith and Doedee doesn’t worry you?

Especially considering he wouldn’t be taking the kick ins at all?

Any news as to whether he would be playing in the middle or on a wing at all?

He won't be taking kick ins at all (Smith) & won't be playing middle or wing.

I think he'll just find the ball 25 plus times a game.

Convincing enough analysis for you? :p

My gut tells me that Laird might drop back in the pack a little this season.
Will be very interesting to see if it eventuates and if the return of Smith and emergence of Milera will have a severe impact on Laird.

R Laird:
2018:
Disposals: 32.2
SC Avg when disposals equal/exceed 33: 119.63 from 8 (low of 84 and a high of 138, 2/8 below 100, 5/8 120+)
SC Avg when disposals below 33: 100.67 from 12 (low of 76 and a high of 120, 5/12 below 100, 1/12 120+)
Marks: 6.2
SC Avg when marks equal/exceed 7: 115.63 from 8 (low of 98 and a high of 138, 2/8 below 100, 3/8 120+)
SC Avg when marks below 7: 103.33 from 12 (low of 76 and a high of 133, 5/12 below 100, 3/12 120+)
Contested Possessions: 10
SC Avg when contested possessions equal/exceed 10: 113.3 from 10 (low of 89 and a high of 137, 2/10 below 100, 4/10 120+)
SC Avg when contested possessions below 10: 103.2 from 10 (low of 76 and a high of 138, 5/10 below 100, 2/10 120+)

Their favourable start and Laird's tendency to score better at home and pre bye have been my main reasons for starting him rather than upgrading as if he drops back to the 100-105+ range I still expect him to perform better for the 1st half of the season.

Was about fourth for disposals per game last year, as a defender. I’d be quite surprised if he didn’t.
will still be a top 6 back no doubt
I certainly agree that he'll be top 6, just watching the Crows JLT though they seemed to play a much more direct game out of defence especially when Smith had ball in hand. It seemed his vision was always forward and on the run and I think he'll lead metres gained with Milera if they stay fit. Just seemed to me that there was less focus on that chip kick backwards and switch of play that does see Laird often involved. I don't know, probably talking myself in to my decision to not start him but something I'm thinking about.

I had Crisp for most of last year. You are right about his possessions being key. I remember doing the stats on him and he averaged about 111 with 23+ disposals and 85 with 22 or less.

I don't think he butchers the ball though. He went at 77.2% disposal efficiency. Crisp and Langdon were the players in the top 10 at the club for both contested possessions and disposal efficiency. So he was beating out the likes of Pendles and Steele.

He was going to be one of my first picked defenders but then he had an interrupted preseason. After seeing him rack up the possies in JLT 2 though I am very tempted by him again.
What was the interruption? I am considering him and didn't know that he had had a bad preseason, how much training ect did he miss?

I’m also looking at Crisp as a replacement for Witherden and would be interested in what his issues were preseason.

He had post season hip surgery and was managing a back issue so he didn't start his preseason with the main group. It was said throughout that he should be fine from round 1 but I was just cautious of anyone with an interrupted preseason.
