Parker and Burgess as small forwards in awful teams screams 40 point scorers.

Balta in a really good side will have plenty of chances to kick goals, can win his own ball and may even pinch hit in the ruck for easy points.

His Job security the worry but pretty clearly for mine appeals to be a much bigger scorer than those other two.
I think this might be a case of over blowing the first rookie named

I think wait until other team announcements and try in limited time to make the right rational selection

It’s exciting to get some rookies named no question

I don't think Hatley should be a marginal rookie personally, very much worth the $$ over a Gibbons type IMO.

Small forward in a bottom end side doesn't fill me with confodence.
More job security is the idea I reckon, not sure how many of those slow burners you can afford to have though

Could be true but if I had a wish list of available FWD rookies to pick from then Balta would be third in line .... happy to take that risk for now ...

It might be overrating Balta a bit but definitely realistic about Burgess and Parker..

Just hopefully some other forward rookies with good scoring potential and decent job security as Setterfield, Drew and Balta are the only ones that have even been rumoured that look to have decent scoring potential.

Rookie forwards have generally scored better in the better sides, see Papley, Ryan, Stephenson, Fritsch, Higgins all in top 6 sides and all played quite a few games as well.

Is he only there because they are limiting Lynch’s game time this round?

He reeks of a rookie trap to me

Parker and burgess have way better JS surely?
Find it hard to think they 10% difference in game time would justify changing their team structure. Either way, Lynch will most likely have limited game time for at least a few weeks (like NicNat last year).

Parker and Burgess should have better JS, but will probably score much worse in bottom teams.

does collins become relevant seen we have few more defender rookies to choose? collins is meant to be playing a lock down role as far as i read. therefore you would expect if scoring to be fairly low. i am not sure if he is worth 180k

His scoring potential is definitely hurt by Thompson’s injury but 9 of his 10 possessions against Sydney were intercepts so it looks like he can still intercept and would probably get more possessions outside of intercepts in a regular game

It might be they don’t play Lynch in the ruck this week but plan on doing it or just decide to restructure because they’ve gone tall after being successful as a smaller team.

Not sure how far off Caddy and Grigg are sounds like anywhere from 3-8 weeks, those two are definitely a threat to his security.

I’d pick him over Burgess but not over Parker. As bad as St Kilda are they’re still far better than the suns and Parker has security.

Currently I have Parker > Balta > Burgess (with job security) > Petruccelle

Still working through this one ... intercept marks are his strength and I hope they can come up with another lock down defender to free him up.

Initial draw on paper doesn't look too bad though ... STK, FRE, WBD. CAR, ADE, BRI ... but then it heads to WCE, MEL, PTA, GEE ...

But where do the cheap points come from .... as he doesn't really do much more ...

Reckon if you wanted a dream draw for an intercept defender, those first 4 would be it, No Mcartin or Hogan, and no notable KPFs for dogs or blues. If he doesn't post some spike games early, I'll almost certainly be jumping off early.

Great discussion re fwd rookies.
For me now it becomes a XvY if
Drew v Burgess
Balta is in. Plenty of discussion about him above but positive signs that he is named in the same side as Lynch and Riewoldt means it’s his spot to lose.

Drew poorer JS with a few senior players to come in
Burgess: Better JS, D/Flink with Moore but lower scoring potential.

Go for JS if you don't expect to need them on the field

Would be interested in what you are liking about him, scored well in JLT1, but only managed 42 from 66% in JLT2. I've read GWS' midfield is actually pretty shallow, is that the thinking?

If two out of Constable, Atkins and Bewley are named do you pick Gibbons? Looks like another fwd pocket Garlett role. Only an additional 17k
