Don’t think he’ll have much more scoring potential than Parker and less security
I must interested in your thoughts here ... Balta averaged 78 in the JLT and Parker 49. I know Parker scored fairly well in the WAFL (76) but I imagine his role might be different?

If two out of Constable, Atkins and Bewley are named do you pick Gibbons? Looks like another fwd pocket Garlett role. Only an additional 17k
I like Bewley in Fremantle. Even though it’s Ross Lyon reports are as long as he’s healthy he should have good job security.

Seems like a good player and not like they have depth knocking the door down to push him out.

I just don't think Balta will score anywhere near that in the AFL when the season starts. He's a raw key forward who will score in the 50's in my opinion, he was rated around average in most categories the VFL last year according to the prospectus. I now probably think Burgess is a better option with better job security despite the JLT.

How things can change in a night! Last night I was speculating if we will have enough rookies and now we have a surplus on all 3 lines and I’m considering dropping a playing 102k mature age rookie. Gibbons is out for now and if he kicks a bag (which is unlikely) it’s always easy to downgrade to the 102k.

I have seen a lot of mid-priced players picked and will be interesting to see if their ownership % reduce as more switch to a GnR approach.

Would be interested in what you are liking about him, scored well in JLT1, but only managed 42 from 66% in JLT2. I've read GWS' midfield is actually pretty shallow, is that the thinking?
It's as much about disliking Gibbons as it is liking Hatley in my case. The injuries to Ward and Langdon paired with the question marks around Kelly & Hoppers fitness lead me to believe that there is some opportunity for some decent minutes for a rookie in GWS side. Hatley fits the bill for those minutes especially with Caldwells injury.

For whatever reason we barely saw him in JLT and he was a late in for one game, that makes me think he's not very safe in the team. He should have been a lock from the start, but job security doesn't look great.

Thanks - you may be right if he plays that role, although he seemed to get hitouts in both games ... I wonder whether that gives him better scoring opportunity. He's probably still marginal for me, but could sneak in.

He will be safer in the side than Petruccelle in my opinion (once Cripps comes back) with more upside and he could prove me wrong and score more, but 6 hitouts a game, with probably 2 to advantage only gets you 8-10 points. He's been spoken of as fairly raw from an AFL perspective, but that he's an athletic beast.

Thanks, this makes sense. Mid minutes can be gold for rookies.

I’m more sold on Balta than I first was after reading comments on here.

Might sneak into my side as well. We seem spoiled for choices I wonder whether Drew could end up on our mid benches?

One extra avenue to maximise early rookie scores

That's true - although I tend to think rucks get ancillary points from tackles, disposals etc that they otherwise wouldn't have had. It's not a huge amount of ruck time implied in those stats, obviously, but it could help. It seems he could have a decent ceiling if things fall his way. Agree re Petrucelle, he's been out of the running for me for a while.

Tigers got a steal getting Balta. Definitely raw but not many players his size can out run Jayden Hunt for god’s sake!

I’m just gonna back him in as that Papley/Otten low JS type pick and hope he can keep Castagna or Weller out for 5 weeks or so til Caddy is back. Always a chance a Richmond player can cop an injury. He scored a ton as well in the JLT....how many basement priced rookies do that?

Handy little chop-out for Nank while he rests forward so they don't have to ruck Riewoldt. Offers far more around the ground than Soldo.

hard to keep up with all this Balta talk.

Are people suddenly playing him on field or on the bench ?

A Rookie X vs. Y, ideally I wouldn't ask this until teams are announced tomorrow night or we get confirmation, but I have a pretty busy day at work on the cards so at least going through scenarios tonight...

Butters + Hately

vs.

Cousins + Bewley

** The assumption being that Bewley is selected (which is no sure thing)

2 and a half foot vertical on him as well, has a bit to learn about footy but some very promising signs nonetheless.
