Bontempelli shaping up as a great upgrade target.

In 2018, averaged 114.9 in 11 games against non-final sides, 89 from 8 against top 8 sides. His best score v the finalists was a 128 v Melbourne.

In 2019, he plays 6 2018 finalists prior to the bye (6/11), 4 after (including Melbourne).

After the bye, the Dogs play 7 at Docklands (Bontempelli averaged 106 from 13 games there in 2018), 1 at Adelaide Oval (120 and 129 in 2018), and 1 at the Gabba (played twice there in his career - 147 and 127).

Prior to the bye, they play only 5 at Docklands, but play twice in Perth (79 @ Perth Stadium in 2018 in his only outing there, averages 99.6 in WA from 5 career games), and in Geelong where he has only tonned up once (his debut year) in 4 games there.

Easier fixture in terms of scoring history in regards to teams played and locations post-bye.

Can see a 101-103 average pre-bye and 108-110 post-bye (overall season av of 105-108). Would be very worthwhile picking up if his price drops to around 510k or under at the bye.

Picking up Oliver and Yeo as my priority targets for rounds 5-7, but Merrett, Bont, Zorko will all likely be underpriced at some stage during the year and could deliver a 110 average for your team (not just looking at season averages which are basically useless for trade-ins).

Really nice post and info, he wasn't in my plans but will keep an eye on him now.

Cheers.

The other thing is that my assumption is that the Dogs are more likely to have a genuine forward line later in the year. Should mean more midfield time for Bont - if Boyd, Schache and 4 of Dickson, Picken, Lloyd, McLean, Gowers, Lipinski are all fit (which they aren't at round 1) then he has to be on the watchlist.

Explains so much of his form last year. Can he turn back the clock one more time at 31? In 3% of teams.
Bar last year I've never started without him. I'm not sure if his mid time goes down with Adams coming back though. I'd be surprised if he didnt go 110, he's the 3rd best SC player of all time. Looked razor sharp in the JLT and was number 1 in in the JLT for CBAs. I'm very tempted but I'm going to stick with Steele due to price/bye. If I knew this news earlier then maybe I'd get him in.

Is there any history of guys returning to elite status at age 31 after dropping back for a few years?

It’s a tough game to keep at elite levels post age 30. Susceptibility to new injuries being a key negative. He feels great now but what about by round 10?

It can happen though.

Anyone worried about Coniglio copping a tag this year which he’s never had to deal with before?

Hodge 2015. Punched out a 177 and a 165 on his way to averaging 108 after three years between 86-97.

Simmo 2016? 106.4 following seven years in the 90s. Not really a return to elite status, more of a breakout ...

Montagna returned to 111.4 in 2015 having dipped to 89.4. Not a few years in the wilderness ...

Oh here's a good one. Heath Scotland 2011, got 105.7 after three years in the 90s. Before that he'd gone 110.3 and 106.7.

Swanny pushed out a 21/106 at 31 after 17/86 the year before.

My wife (who also plays supercoach and is arguably better than me) was just saying last night that this is the first year she hasn't picked Pendles. I just sent her the article, that should throw a spanner in the works.....all's fair in love and supercoach!

Will Dom Sheed be important after round 1 score in but not sure I can get him as would have to trade out Collins this week and ever one of Grundy Gawn out but not likely to do that or heeney means 3 trades used after round 3 thoughts .

Don't trade out Grundy, Gawn or Heeney. You picked them as keepers, so unless they get a long term injury you have to back them in to score at keeper levels.
