NORTH Melbourne rookie Tom Wilkinson has quit the AFL to be part of the next season of The Amazing Race Australiawith Paul Roos' son Tyler.

AFL.com.au understands Wilkinson and Roos, former Southport teammates in the NEAFL, flew to a secret location on Monday to start filming for the reality TV show.

Wilkinson played his final game for North's VFL side on Saturday, winning eight disposals and kicking one goal in a 102-point loss to Geelong's reserves at GMHBA Stadium.

It is believed he approached Kangaroos officials in the past fortnight about his TV opportunity, knowing he faced an uphill battle to retain his spot on the list.

Applications for The Amazing Race Australia shut on July 7, with the successful teams pitted against each other in a series of activities, in various countries, for the right to win $250,000 prizemoney.

The pairings are kept secret until the show airs, which forced Southport, where Roos – son of AFL great Paul – was still playing, to come up with a story as to why the gun midfielder was going to miss the rest of the season.

FULL INJURY LIST Who's ruled out and who's a test?

The white lie to local media was that Roos, who was in contention to win the NEAFL's most valuable player award this year, had accepted a job in the United States.

Wilkinson missed out on being drafted for four straight years until his breakout 2018 season as a forward – after being a midfielder until then – grabbed the Kangaroos' attention.

North Melbourne selected him with the 41st pick in last year's rookie draft and he was a pre-season standout in aerobic testing at Arden St.

However, a serious ankle injury effectively ruined Wilkinson's season, and he was unable to make a strong impression in his eight VFL games either side of the setback.

this one certainly should get more attention than it will by the Melbourne media :)

Big farewell: Freo giant to hang up the size 18s

WHEN Aaron Sandilands walked in the doors at Fremantle in late 2001 he was already a giant of a man, but he will depart at season's end a giant of the football club after announcing his retirement.

A four-time All Australian and dual Doig medallist, the former rookie will play his 271st career match and final home game in Saturday night's clash with Essendon.

One of the most dominant rucks in the game's history, Sandilands hangs up the size 18 boots as the all-time leader in hitouts (currently 8466) and among the most influential Dockers in the club's 25 years.

Only club legend Matthew Pavlich (353) and current teammate David Mundy (314) have pulled on the purple more times.

wonder how he would be viewed if he had played for a Melbourne club, Fyfe's SC scores will suffer for sure
I would have guessed he played fewer games. 271 is quite an achievement for someone of his size, especially with all the long distance travel Freo do.

It’s not every day an all time stats leader retires.

come on , you can't leave us hanging like that ? what is the reason ? punch up with Ken ?
The bloke hasn’t come back with it yet. It’s a Carlton supporter on Bigfooty that has a heap of mail on Port that i’ve never actually seen be wrong.

Called Wingard and Polec being gone early along with Rockliff coming and basically anything that has happened he’s called very early.

The other supporters speculating that it would have something to do with Ken and the treatment of his off field skiing this year. Absolutely loves Ken and probably can see the painting on the wall that Ken will be gone end of next year.

Unrelated: I know a few people from Echuca that actually say Wines is a massive FIGJAM when he comes home and calls himself the ‘king of echuca’

Ken might be gone Saturday night if they lose to their bogey team again.

Sounds like he has good Intel , wonder if @BigRuss has heard anything.

A footballer being FIGJAM when they go home , fancy that.

My brother was working security and wouldn't allow Tex Walker into one of the pubs in Broken Hill one night when he couldn't show any ID , Tex said don't you know who I am ? My brother replied yep played footy with your dad , still not coming in without ID.

Haha that’s gold!

And yeah I think if Ken didn’t have 2 years on the contract he would be gone now but it’d be a fair payout to sack him before the end of next year.

I was at North v Port last time we played them at Etihad and beat them comfortably. Going again Saturday night so hopefully it’s a repeat.

speaking of rumours and Intel , what about that other team in Adelaide town ?

are both the Crouch boys leaving or just 1?

Betts , Douglas , Greenwood , Jacobs , Jenkins , McKay etc etc

they might not have a team with all the whispers

Actually playing a lot better the last 2-3 weeks , got some purpose about them again.

You are right , doubt they could afford the pay out.

Both Crouch bros are pretty happy atm from all reports.

I could see someone like GC sniffing around Brad but just can’t see him wanting to move there. Think a move back to Victoria would be possible but I’m a lot less confident he leaves than I would’ve been last year.

He was very very close to taking an acceptance from St Kilda for 5 years $800,000 per year (and then obviously they would’ve had to trade for him) but things fell apart and they went with Hannebery after that.

Brad was absolutely filthy at the medical staff for the mismanagement of his injuries and they basically forced him to play and told him he was ok and to fast track surgery and stuff to try and make a higher position in finals, when he absolutely shouldn’t have been playing the back end of 2017.

I’m not sure if those staff members are gone but he’s over that situation now so I’d be surprised if he did leave. It would take a big offer considering he’s happy with his Adelaide gf over there and close with all of his teammates and brother.

I reckon we are playing better because we've finally got some forward line structure .... amazing to think it has taken this long for Ken to work it out ...

Or are the assistants finally taking over at selection night ...

- won't comment on Ollie
- SPP seems to have got the message recently ..... play to his strengths, link up with the runners and he doesn't look so bad when he has a structure in place to bomb it to as a last resort ...

Fascinating to read all that , thanks for taking the time to reply.

Listening to a few of the so-called media experts over here they seem hell bent on moving at least 1 of the Crouch boys on so as to improve the pace of the midfield , seemingly Crouch , Crouch , Gibbs , Greenwood , Sloane etc are too similar in style.

Still need a few players to actually win the ball , because when the going gets tough a lot of Crows players don't like getting their knees dirty and prefer staying on the outside.

Be interesting how they manage their list at the end of this season and next especially as they try and tempt Lukosious & Rankine home.

Will they use one of the Crouch boys as bait ? , time will tell.
