YOUNG DEMON SUFFERS SECOND ACL INJURY THIS YEAR

BY SEN 20 MINUTES AGO

Melbourne youngster Aaron Nietschke has suffered a second ACL injury in his first season at the Demons.

Nietschke re-injured his right knee at training last Friday with scans confirming a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.

He is expected to miss the entirety of the 2020 season in what is a cruel blow for the 19-year-old after injuring the same knee in February.

“Unfortunately, scans have confirmed that Aaron has ruptured his ACL graft, which will likely sideline him for the 2020 season,” GM of Football Operations Josh Mahoney told melbourne.com.au.

“This is obviously incredibly disappointing news for Aaron and the whole team.

“He had really attacked his rehab and was in great shape prior to this incident.”

Nietschke was selected by Melbourne with pick No.53 in the 2018 AFL Draft from Central Districts in Adelaide.

The Demons will extend Nietschke’s contract beyond next year in a sign of faith and confidence in the young utility.

That didn’t take long at all. By all reports was flying this preseason. From a SC POV, this eliminates any temptation to start him now.
Yes he'll likely be behind for the first half of the season now... the question now is what does it mean for Heeney?

Sydney have an extra experienced forward in Sam Gray this year, who I originally thought may have freed up Heeney a bit. Heeney can take a really good mark, so I guess Horse may now want to keep him forward a bit more if Buddy misses a significant amount of games. He's still a good selection when he is playing forward, even better if he gets more midfield time.

Maybe I'm greedy but I was hoping he would just be a mid ... always looking for value...

Yeah ironhawk summed it pretty well. Heeney might just be one of those ones that never take it to the next level like we expect, for one reason or another but I’ll probably still start him if he’s had a full preseason.

North Melb.
Franklin isn't SC relevant anymore. Body is shot.
But didn't we think Reiwoldt was shot? I thought having a cleanup was a good thing.
The spot is there in my team if he wants it heh.
I'll be picking one of the high 300k players (Lynch, Buddy, Steven et. al.), will just wait to see who stands up in the preseason games.
