On Monday, the Crows were given permission from the AFL for Stengle to train with his former SANFL club, Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.
"Stengle is free to train with the Eagles effective immediately," the Crows said in a statement.

The Crows said the club, the AFL, AFL Players Association and Stengle's management were still working through the investigation.

Even more concerning was that he expects to have the same role, which was basically full time forward. No preseason and bad role does not a fantasy pick make!



I did say best for the team rather than good but he's a fundamentally sound kick who should execute well from kick-ins. He certainly does have a tendency to do exactly what you said though, probably a symptom of a team with no structure or options up forward (Ben Brown as the only option) because technically he is good.

Ziebell might be able to go long from kick ins but finding a better option wouldn't be too hard even for North. His bad kicking has always been there whether North were a good side or not. I thought that was part of the reason he ended up forward in the first place, too many mid options and he was often more damaging to North than the opposition. Whether he's under pressure or not a lot of his kicks resemble rugby league bombs. Of course I can be a bit harsh on players I'm not a fan of, but I've always thought of Ziebell as one of the worst kicks in the comp.

Not sure if everyone is already aware of this, but if I recall correctly, rookie prices moved after just one round last season, not two.

If this is changing back to the normal approach, as the HS article above indicates, that’s a significant tailwind for cash generation and for avoiding dud rookie picks.

On a flip side, playing off half back has turned a lot of bad kicks around. Matt Boyd the ultimate example but it's certainly a lot easier role than midfield/forward just by the nature of how much more space and options there are. Jake Lloyd probably the other really strong example, was a bit of a butcher in his early days and made a lot of poor decisions under the heightened pressure on the wing. The extra time has allowed him to become a very safe ball user, as a Swans fan too safe is now his problem.

Just an observation on the early fixture.
Richmond have Carlton, Hawthorn and Sydney in the first 3 games.
Gold Coast also have a good early fixture.
Makes Dusty a wise call maybe.

You're overly harsh on him, he's better than or equal to most of the comparable midfielders (Parker, Kennedy, Dangerfield, Boak, D. Martin, Bont, Kelly x2, Treloar, Adams, etc). Some of those guys are generally considered good kicks (Martin, Bont and J. Kelly especially) but it's more common for contested bulls to have a kicking efficiency around where he's at than it isnt, it's only the special ones like Pendles that are really in a different league. He can hit some great kicks and with more time down back he should hit them more often and be forced into bad ones less often, those two elements can lead to a pretty big increase. He's also a very decent mark so should be able to intercept nicely in that role.

Maybe he'll get worse, who knows, but the general trend is that for kicking efficiency from the backline is the easiest to show drastic improvements in.

Boyd is for mine the best overall comparison, very similar type of midfielder who was regarded as a poor kick but became a very decent ball user down back and a similar age. Simpson was never a bad kick but he added a couple of years to his career off half back. Rich settled down and found a role on half back after struggling in the mid, HF and wing roles. Neon Leon back in the day, Houli and Liam Baker are two more (all good kicks but the role change making it easier point remains). Ziebell has the advantage though of having been genuinely good in other roles, settling into an easier role that suits his strengths is a good thing for mine if it happens. That they've got so few other rebounders or intercept players just makes it even better because the top role is absolutley available.

Still, to be honest I don't really care if he improves his kicking or even gets that role, he's shown that despite it he can score well enough to push keeper levels. If he does improve that area or the role does improve he can easily push even higher.

Dusty is an eye test, he's shown up like a fat pig after the previous two seasons and started the year like a man playing himself into shape and the opponent really doesn't seem to matter, heck if anything he becomes more volatile as they rest him forward for whole games against the weaker teams and he needs to kick a bag to salvage (he can but it's harder than midfield).

Of course if he shows up in shape or there are a few injuries to force the midfield hand that narrative changes real fast. He's been a pretty consistent upgrade target though most of his career as he does tend to produce more than a few forgettable games.

My biggest concern with Dusty is how slow he has started the season the last 2 years - taken awhile to get going/ tigers looking after him as long season so want their superstar peaking closer to finals time.

If he looks in ripping nick then I will be very tempted I know with so many question marks over the other forward premiums. We know he loves to party in the o***eason which is fair enough so I am concerned as to how fit he will actually be come round 1.

There's also his durability to consider. Rarely misses a game . Saves a trade as well.

He's an uber professional these days, there's little chance he's overweight!

Yeah, I don't have concerns about fitness but he does have a tendency to knock out a 60 randomly now and then when he's not out to win a Brownlow. Part of it seems to be Hardwick stashing him off the ball to maintain him through the season.
