Harry Edwards - DEF worth keeping an eye on from the Eagles... Broke into the side last year as a key defender but got knocked out early in his first game. Has been continuing to grow since arriving at the club and is now not far off Nic Nat in height.... Has been training with the rucks this preseason and talk is he's a chance for the back-up ruck spot with the ability to swing back to defense when not in the ruck.

Errol Gulden 117k MID SYD is certainly in play. Kicked a couple in the first hitout for the Swans and is a crafty small forward who is ready to play from game one. Sydney don't have a lot of crafty small forwards, really just Papley. From what I've read and seen both Campbell and Gulden are very strong chances to play round one.

Gulden would most likely be a bench rookie as small forward is a notoriously difficult role to score consistently. Would also allow Heeney and Papley to both push higher if Campbell and Gulden can hold down the smaller forward roles. Basically they're comparable to the Butters/Rozee pairing as rookie types for mine (Those would be best case scenarios, imo) and should be right in the mix for round 1.

Dev Robertson should be in all teams if picked round 1.

Anyone know when Rory Thompson is due back or if he's in preseason training? I know he did a partial ACL in August, but "partial" covers a lot of sins.
Didn't Robertson play Rd 1 last year and then wasn't seen again all season? I know the Covid shut down played a part, but surely he could have got back in at some point if he was good enough. Whose role from 2020 would he be filling if he was named? I wouldn't be sure he was guaranteed of keeping his spot even if he did get named - the Lions still have a strong list.

Robertson wasn't selected in Round 1, he was an emergency inclusion. IIRC it was for Birchell, and it was because he was the travelling emergency (obviously wasn't like for like). Fagan has consistently picked a team and stuck with it, so if Robertson is picked in Round 1 on his merits I'd back him in to hold his spot. Guys like CEY and Berry Jr cycled through last year - Robertson could easily take their spot.

Personally like the look of Cahill as a fwd rookie option. Been training as a Def and spent the pre season working hard with Andy McGrath. With the loss of Saad and McKenna, big opportunity opens up for a small def, one to keep an eye on...

Yep, he's in my side... being a bottom 4 side this year, the ball will be down our def50 quite often. His JS is pretty good from what I can tell, emphasis on "small defender", but the few games he's played have been pretty good!

Talk of Hurley going up Fwd (when he's back in full training)..

Atm, Hurley, Ambrose and Ridley are not back to 100% full training yet... hopefully pre-season will give a better look, but there appears to be some shuffling of the cards in our spine.

I don't get the Essendon as a bottom 4 side, maybe I rate them too highly but they've got a very good young midfield group and a solid backline group. Forward targets are an issue and their medical staff is horrendous but I think they can push for the 8 quite easily with a few things going their way. I mean the league is wide open so they certainly could finish there but I actually quite like their list.

Still think they could be quite defensive under Rutten so will have points on offer down back. He's on the watchlist for sure!

Robertson had some pretty impressive numbers in his draft year (2019). Averaged 30 disp in the U18 Champs for WA and 29.5 in Perth Colts.

Biggest issue will be breaking into that Lions midfield but if he can cement a spot, then he'd be likely to put up some reasonable scores.

Yeah. I’ve possibly been too hard on em. Being a supporter were used to mediocrity after claims in preseason of “this is our year”, “beginning of our new story” etc.. so I’m trying a bit of reverse psych on them hah!

One thing that worries me is last year when we played Haw, we were 6 goals down at 1/2 time. That was apprently Ben Ruttens gameplay. The 2nd half was Worsfold... (we won by 3 goals)

I’m a bit concerned bout a few of our guys.

Hurley - in Hospital with leg infection
Ambrose - still not 100%
Ridley - same
Francis - flashes of brilliance, but some days he looks like he doesn’t want to be there..

Hopefully I’m wrong and we do improve haha. 2020s game plan was to emulate Richmond and use our small forwards to score.. in absence of KPF

A couple for the Dees who may feature as early as round 1 are Bailey Laurie ($117,300 DEF/FWD) and Fraser Rosman ($117,300 MID/FWD).

Laurie has been very good at training and match sim with sublime skills and an excellent turn of speed. Could see him playing early as a wing/half fwd.

Rosman was drafted after the Dees failed to lure Isaac Smith and from all reports he is a Smith clone with his pace and the way he moves. He has been very impressive so far during the pre-season and looks ready to go. Excellent overhead and with a thumping kick, he is a chance of lining up on a wing from round 1.
