Listed on the GC site as 195cm. I had no idea he was that tall! Also listed as a “key forward”. For the reasons outlined in my earlier post, I watched him pretty closely last year. I kinda saw him as a Mills type rather than a Sicily. I’ll have to go back and check the stats and heat maps but from memory his best games saw him getting the intercepts more up the ground / in the midfield and hitting targets in the forward line on the rebound for score involvement points. He also snuck up for a couple of goals in those games.

A couple of contested intercepts per game will certainly lift the numbers.
His draft comparison was mostly Nick Riewoldt. Endurance beast with elite footskills and strong marking target, especially on the lead but also in general. Hence the KPF thing.

FWIW, Mills is actually taller than Sicily also! Also Mills as a defender actually does play that similar role of floating intercept guy. Mills' problem has always been a certain seagull who hogs the kick-ins and all of the cheap touches, last year Sydney were just terrible enough for there to be even more to go around! Mills without Lloyd probably pushes that Docherty level of scoring as a HBF.

Basically it's pretty easy to push the 85 mark in SC as either an intercept or rebound player. Going further than that generally requires both or elite level ball finding skills as a pure rebounder. A guy like Brodie Smith is a prime example of only doing one at a strong level, McGovern a pretty solid example of the other side. Ridley last year showed how easy it is doing both!

Houston. Do we foresee a problem? 1.2% teams.
Houston is an interesting one. I know a lot of people here were expecting him to be a break out last season, and it didn't happen, which has probably turned a lot of people off him. He still improved on his average, which he has done every season - 73, 77, 89, 91.

Now entering his 5th season at 23, this could be a good year for him. He's still clearly in that breakout range. You would expect he should at least hold his average with a chance of improving to keeper level - it's just how much you see him improving by, and if a low 90's average is good enough if you are wrong whether you pick him or not.

Not the worst choice, best case you get a cheap keeper, worst case he should hold enough value and score well enough while you fix any other problems.

Only the burned lashings in my back from the last couple of years.

Ultimately though they've got too many options for midfield minutes and too many rebounding defenders sharing the load.

Do think he's a strong upgrade target for a D6 type, let him have his couple of 60 type games he seems to always string together in bunches. He's had a solid month averaging under 70 in each of the last 3 seasons. If you could be sure he'd eliminate them he could make the jump but they seem more likely to keep happening. Kind of guy you can find available for ~420k, a price he's decent value at even if not quite 100+ guy.

Based on watching Port games he generally gets mid minutes when Rockliff and/or Wines are missing.

Could very well be watching the wrong player as well all though with 2-3 key forwards , a ruck , 2-3 key backs most other players are just following the ball around in a 50 metre range.

Oh for the coach brave enough to hold 2-3 players inside F50 and then just have 2 long kicks to find them.

Could completely change the game.

@Professor

You are the best to ask.

Where are all these SC points coming for Carlton players ?

Docherty , Newman , Saad , Williams

Cripps , Curnow , Martin , Murphy , Setterfield , Walsh

Surely 6 of them can't go 95+

Petrevski-Seton , Pittonet , Weitering

McGovern 😉

Dogs had 7 go 95+ and a couple more around the mark. Cats had 8. Pies also had 8.

I'd think that the top 3 mids in Williams, Cripps and Walsh should all push 100+ if fit. Curnow likely to suffer and fall back a bit, Murphy continues his decline, Setterfield pushed down a rung by a fit Cripps and Williams, probably stays around where he's at instead of continuing the near 100 average to finish last year.

Down back I think Saad is what he normally is of a solid 80s guy, Newman an interesting one, see how he goes when back, Doch should be around where he is or better. Would think if anything Saad probably takes away some of the attention but less of the ball than Simpson would in comparison. Martin will be what he is, float between forward and mid and be in the 80s range.

So basically Cripps, Doch, Walsh and Williams 100+, Curnow & Setterfield 90+, Martin, Saad, Newman in the 80+. SPS who bloody knows. PIttonet probably improves a bit if he even holds the job over TDK. Weitering probably a bit of improvement but not a lot.

McGovern probably averages 100+, in the VFL.

Definitely a lot of competition this year, which is great. Doc, Saad and Williams yes, Newman might struggle to get a game, but he won't average 95 if he plays. Murph and Curnow should be playing supporting roles, Setters will struggle for consistency. Cripps back to his playing weight from 2018/2019, So yes to Zac, Saad, Doc, Crippa, Walshy.

That's a really good point. Only 3,300 SC points in a game no matter how well certain players play. Has to be some players that miss out and from your list above I'm thinking they may be Newman (no evidence he can score well when surrounded by other high scoring SC players), Saad (2020 was his only SC season averaging above 82), Murphy (will be 34 half way through the season and scores already fell away last season) and maybe Curnow (at 31 I can see others taking his points).

I just put 4 of them in my team and instantly had a pain in my stomach , maybe it was coincidence 😉

Definitely will start Cripps.

One Carlton player might be enough at this stage.

Setterfield is actually the one I think who could nearly score the most.

All this attention on Cripps , Doc , FHOF & Zac Attack he might be left alone.

Isn't TDK out with stress related concerns/issues in his back ?

Certainly lots of SC options at Carlton this year.
