Draft slots have been determined - good luck to everyone!
My (y)for your post @kennychao was purely for your good work in getting the league filled and draft order finalized so early.
I'd give you a half thumbs-up for my pick #12.
In AFL draft I'd love it. I like the back-to-back picks and I know enough to be able to plan 24 picks ahead. I know which players and positions are likely to be taken; which are likely to get a run on.
I'm not so knowledgeable about the NFL.

A bit later:
After some thought I've decided that it's probable none of us really know which players are likely to be taken after the first 1-2 rounds.
With so many of us new to NFL draft who know what people will do?

@Rupert & team

Have a read of the articles on fantasypros. They are in depth & very detailed

https://www.fantasypros.com/2022/07...eepers-busts-round-by-round-advice-2022-july/

This gives you a good idea for what type of player to draft in each round (and why)

https://www.fantasypros.com/nfl/rankings/ppr-cheatsheets.php

^ the link above is really good as it provides consensus ratings from different experts (averaged out). You can sort by the different positions

Our league is a PPR (points per reception) draft league

You can also cross reference the individual player profiles on the sleeper app to review their performances from the last few seasons and make up your own mind. It will tell you a lot of info, projected scores & news (and if you go into game log & history you can see their actual scores etc)

For those that played NFL RDT I’ve also cross-referenced pricing & scoring from the app on RDT to help me determine who is better priced / valued etc

I would also highly suggest doing some mock drafts via the sleeper app. The more practices you have the better understanding of the type of players you’re looking at

I've had a go at my draft rankings. Perhaps surprisingly, but very much akin to my AFL experience, the pickings get slim in the later rounds and my rankings only roughly agree with the experts.

I was a little surprised at first that my "reliable" picks faded after about pick #150.
But on reflection it shouldn't have been a surprise. Yes, there are 32 teams with potentially 6 relevant players from each team: 1 x QB, 1 x RB. 2 x WR, 1 x TE, 1 x K . Theoretically that's 192 players but in practice not every team has 6 fantasy relevant players.

As for my rankings only roughly agreeing with the experts........
I'm confident of my AFL judgements, I'll be interested to see how my NFL judgements work out.

How are our other NFL draft rookies finding it?

Hey guys

I have a potential suggestion that I was hoping to get some secondary input on

With the leagues I have been associated with (NBA / NFL) on sleeper, there have been leagues that have the draft on the same night (3m turns etc) - which is what our current default is (Sunday night the first week of September), 7 days before R1 I believe. With drafts that are completed on the same night, I have found that sometimes the selections are rushed, often later on (with hindsight), I would have preferred to have more time (and research) into some of my picks

I am suggesting starting the draft 2-3 weeks earlier, and doing say (max) 12 hour turns (which just means 12 hours max per selection), and would take 1-2 weeks which helps with more detailed turn selection & gives coaches the best chance to draft a team they are content with. SuperCoach doesn’t allow this function (adjusting the time allocated per turn) so I don’t think this is something SC Draft players are familiar with (I can also pause the draft at any time if necessary)

Through experience I have found that I was a lot more confident in my pick selections with the additional time (instead of rushing picks in <3m). My team (first draft) last season compared to this season was a living testament of this (in one of my other leagues) This also eliminates issues where there may be coaches that are unavailable that weekend/day/timeslot (or any other time slot we settle on). It does extend the overall timeframe of the draft but I figured if everyone is happy with their selections (and have more time), we’d be more likely to have a successful First Edition of the SCS draft league

Thoughts?

I don't mind either way: 3min turns or a slow draft.

Mind you, there are dangers with a slow draft if people aren't careful.
I've done a slow draft on Ultimate Footy and I hated the way it worked out.
Some days there would be a rush of picks but other days you'd be lucky to get 3/4.
We started 3 weeks before round 1 but eventually had to finish off the last 5/6 rounds with 3min turns on the Monday before game 1. Which pretty much negated the whole purpose of a slow draft. In my experience it's usually the later round picks that require more thought and research.

Not saying that that would happen with us but it's something we should be aware of as a possibility.

I'm not a fan of slow drafts. I end up wasting a lot of time checking in regularly.

I don't mind doing the draft in stages, so that people can prepare themselves, if that makes it more enjoyable.

3 minutes per pick is already an awfully long time between picks for experienced drafters.

We should be able to get at least half of us one night to do a mock draft together, which would be helpful in people seeing who might be available around each of their picks.

Just for clarity, The maths for 3min per pick 12x15 is 9 hours which is a long time for everyone to be online. 2mins drops it to 6 hours.

In my AFL drafts we have 280 SC and 310 DT picks. In the early days they could take up to 3.5 hours but this year they took around 2.5 hours.

The first few rounds tend to go very fast - 5-6 picks a minute. It is only when we get to the later rounds that things slow down.

Obviously previous draft experience helps but mostly it's doing your research and setting your draft order before the draft.
When it comes to pick #170 and you are faced with choosing largely "unknown" WRs your pre-set draft order should be a good guide.

This relies on the assumption that all 180 picks will take three minutes exactly with none under or over the three minutes allotted. A more likely guide would be between 2 to 5 hours with 2-3:30 hours more probable than 4+.

This will be the first time I have entered a draft comp in any sport so take my comments from that perspective.

I have tried the Sleeper mock draft a number of times. The first three or four lines should not take long because top end players are the easiest to pick but the bottom half could take a lot longer.

If you don’t have a draft plan with lists of players for each position then I think you are going to be in a world of pain choosing a team. More importantly not being prepared will slow down the draft for everyone. You could of course use Auto Pick…but I would have thought you need to do your research well before draft night and that includes lots of sleeper options in the low end of the draw.

I get what you mean about rushed selections but I think 2-3 weeks earlier is too far out. Players get injured etc. I am inclined to leave as is. Someone not being available on the draft night is a problem but I would assume it always has been for all draft comps and not sure how it has been dealt with in the past in other comps.

Excellent guys, now we have expected timeframes
Being discussed, we can set it up. Im happy to commit to 3-4 hours on any mutually agreed date

I am using the Sleeper mock draft. I am not sure that it accurately reflects how coaches would pick teams (first five picks WR???) but it does give a good idea of how your favoured selections can disappear and you are forced into choosing 2nd and 3rd string back up selections that give you a team nothing like the one you envisaged.

I think the bye rounds can be nasty surprise as well. You might pick Henry and D Swift as your RB 1-2 and think you did well but they have the same draw and you already relying on your bench. Suspect the success of the "MPM" picks is key to having a good team.

When I go to the Sleeper draft room the top picks are:
J Taylor, McCaffrey, Henry, Ekeler, Kupp, Jefferson, Cook, Harris, Chase, Mixon, Adams etc

I think you might have the WR list highlighted.
Directly above the top pick there is a bar with:
Find player, All, QB, RB, WR, TE, Flex and K
Check to see if the WR option is highlighted.

Hi @Rupert. I did not explain it that well. I meant when you do a mock draft there are examples of one of the mock coaches picking WR as there first five picks. Or another time TE first then four RB and no WR till rd 6 of the draft. Or no RB till round 8 one time! I am not sure a coach would do that in a real draft (or would they?). And I think that distorts the mock draft in terms of trying to practice picking a balanced team. The upside is that it gives you good practice in dealing with not getting the players you like and needing to adjust accordingly.
