I am using the Sleeper mock draft. I am not sure that it accurately reflects how coaches would pick teams (first five picks WR???) but it does give a good idea of how your favoured selections can disappear and you are forced into choosing 2nd and 3rd string back up selections that give you a team nothing like the one you envisaged.

I think the bye rounds can be nasty surprise as well. You might pick Henry and D Swift as your RB 1-2 and think you did well but they have the same draw and you already relying on your bench. Suspect the success of the "MPM" picks is key to having a good team.
Picks say 5-9 will be the make or break for most teams - middle rounds are crucial! I do hope everyone is using the mock draft functionality - the more drafts you so the more variables you can account for.

Looks like the general consensus is for us to keep the draft on the one night (no issue there). Was thinking we could move it maybe 1 (or 2) weeks earlier than the original date - I’m due to fly out to Cairns the next morning so would prefer (if possible) to have it done well before that, and that is the last week before the games start

Unsure what sort of day works for most of you. Do Sundays nights (still work?) was thinking either 21st or 28th of August? Or would you guys prefer a week night?

Hi @Rupert. I did not explain it that well. I meant when you do a mock draft there are examples of one of the mock coaches picking WR as there first five picks. Or another time TE first then four RB and no WR till rd 6 of the draft. Or no RB till round 8 one time! I am not sure a coach would do that in a real draft (or would they?). And I think that distorts the mock draft in terms of trying to practice picking a balanced team. The upside is that it gives you good practice in dealing with not getting the players you like and needing to adjust accordingly.
Ahhh, understood.
I doubt any coach would be as extreme as the examples you quote but I have heard of somewhat similar strategies.
One podcaster claims he aims to take maybe 4 WRs as his first picks. He claims that the depth of the more reliable WRs is shallower than that of reliable RBs. He's happy to pick up RBs later than most and rely on match-ups during the season.
Another podcaster leaves his QB until almost the last pick as, again, he'll rely on match-ups with waiver wire pick-ups.
Ditto for TEs. Some don't like using an early pick on the 4-5 decent TEs.

Have you participated in AFL drafts?
[If what I'm about to type is old hat to you I apologize. I don't want to sound patronizing.]
I know coaches who will use their first 6 picks (of an 18 player team) on mids. They say that you can always find a reasonable def/fwd on the waiver wire but never a reasonable mid.
I think that's rather silly but then others think I'm silly when I wait until very late to take a ruck.

I doubt I've ever had an AFL draft go as expected no matter how many mock drafts I do (courtesy of The Draft Doctors). People always reach for players they really like.
But sometimes you can't avoid it. e.g. I have pick #12 in our draft. Which means there will be 22 players taken between each of my paired picks. There are bound to be times when a player I want won't last to my next pick. So if I want a player who's expected to be taken around #30 I either have to take them at #13 or accept I won't get them.
That's easy enough to plan for for the first 6-7 rounds but increasingly difficult after that.
I think the oddities of the mock draft help in planning for this.

I'm happy with whatever others decide: one week or two out; night or afternoon; any day of the week.

Monday to Thurs suits me and evenings are fine from 6.30pm (WA time). Sundays can be tricky but the original date was fine.

Don't mind weeknights, Sunday is ok too. I'm unavailable on the 28th to September 5th, away on a family holiday to NT.

Here's a quote from Mike Clay of ESPN
"others opine that some form of the "Zero-RB" strategy is your ticket to a fantasy title. If you're not familiar, Zero RB is an antifragile drafting philosophy that involves not selecting any running backs until at least the middle portion of your draft, instead loading up on wide receivers (and perhaps an elite tight end) in the first several rounds. Then, when top backs inevitably get injured, your opponents' rosters get worse and you can use your stashed backs and waivers to fill your RB slots, giving you an edge on the field."

He cites a 2021 draft he was in against several believers in the "Zero RB" strategy where his first picks were predominantly RBs: Kamarra #5; Chubb #20; Swift #29; Jacobs #53 and Fournette #125.
That's 4 x RBs in his first five picks which you'd think would give him an edge in both RBs and flex. It almost wouldn't matter if your WRs were poor.

Hi @Rupert

From the bit of research I have done I am tending to go with more of a balanced strategy. I have seen both RB loaded and the joys of WR articles. I am thinking picking the very best of both RB and WR is the aim. Even if I had a RB strategy I think it would be silly to turn down Kupp if he was available just so I can follow a RB strategy and get at #6 RB as my first pick instead.

From the time I played Dream Team NFL I can recall injuries are widespread. In AFL we can see guys that play 21 or 22 games a season but you don't see that in NFL that much. So your bench gets used a lot. Also I found individual match ups seem to play a big role in NFL because the offense have so many specific plays. And you can drown in NFL stats so I am careful how much I read into them.

I prefer the balanced approach myself.
