Some big scores in this group! Congrats @jel for the weekly win

922 for me this week - very hard to complain with a score >900 but getting both the C call wrong and the trades wrong makes it a bit bittersweet.

Hard to see a situation where Russell isn't in my team next round

Sounds like it was motivated by contract length - the man just wants to stay at the top for as long as possible.
Pretty sure Alpine just wanted to give him a one year deal, so they could pick up Piastri the following year. Alonso wanted two years. But I got the impression Alpine were going to give in.

Logan Sargent may get the Williams drive now in place of Latifi.

There looks to be a lot more to this story than what is being reported. ie why would he directly contradict his potential team if he didn't have something else lined up?
Piastri to McLaren. Dan Ric goes back to Alpine/Renault?

All sorts of things could have happened here. Suspect Piastri felt that there wasn't going to be a seat available at Alpine (the team expected Alonso to stay) but the longer that took to sort out, the less time was available to find another seat for 2023. So Piastri takes matters into his own hands and does a deal with McLaren.

Then Vettel retires (that wasn't guaranteed to happen), Aston offers Alonso more money and a guaranteed two season contract, leaving Alpine short a driver. They assume Piastri still doesn't have a 2023 F1 drive, but turns out he does.

Curious what Piastri's contract status with Alpine looks like. Is it possible he wasn't under contract with them for 2023, they just assumed he had nowhere else to go?

There is a huge amount to unpack here, but my best interpretation of the situation is that Piastri had an exit clause with Alpine if a suitable loan deal wasn't in place by 31 July.

I also don't think it's a coincidence at all that Alonso's announcement came the morning of August 1 - Webber and Alonso are documented good friends, and Alonso (probably feeling some bad blood from recent treatment by Alpine) probably timed it as a favour to his old mate and to ensure Alpine were past time to pull the trigger on a Piastri agreement. Alpine then coming out with a statement confirming Piastri, with no Piastri quotes attached to it, smells like they were scrambling and desperately hoping Piastri didn't have something lined up.

For me the most intrigue here sits with DR. On one hand, the strength of Piastri's denial ("I won't be driving for Alpine in 2023") suggests he has a deal with a team as a fait accompli. McLaren is the rumoured destination, again with Webber using his network (raced for Porsche LMP when Seidl was Team Principal). But DR went and did the media rounds the week before France, reaffirming his commitment to seeing out his contract. So does he have the power to trigger his 2023 option? What can McLaren do to get rid of him? Or is DR simply posturing to look for a financial settlement to leave?

Despite Alpine, Alonso and Piastri doing their best to keep things interesting, the reality is we've got 3 consecutive weekends with no races.

So in a bid to keep up a bit of chatter here, I'm going to discuss three (one a week) potential new F1 fantasy games we could play next season. I'm not expecting to run all three, but if there is sufficient interest, we can look at bringing the popular ones in.

(The current game style will still run next season. But it also suffers from, everybody making similar teams, its the same concept/rules every season, it doesn't generate much chatter outside of posting teams. So maybe we can make something new too.)

Potential New Game 1: Streak
Going to start with a basic one. If you've played Streak with footy tipping, this should sound pretty familiar.

Prior to lockout, each manager needs to select one driver or team to score 45 points or more for the round, based on the current scoring system. Each manager can only select each driver or team once for the season. If a managers selection scores less than 45 points they are out. Winner is the manager that makes it the furthest.

There are 22-23 rounds in a season, and so far in 2022, all 10 teams have achieved 45 points in a round at least once, as have 15 drivers.

Participating managers would just need to post their selection in the chat (or DM me if they want to keep it secret) by lockout each round. I'll maintain a spreadsheet with everybody's selections throughout the season and publish it post lockout.

If this sounds like something you'd be interested in for 2023, let me know. Also, feel free to post away with any questions or suggestions for rule changes to the above.

I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy the F1 fantasy format much which is why I didn't join the fantasy comp this season. Teams are way too similar.

I would be keen to try something a bit different, would probably prefer a whole season game (you can be out of this comp after Rd 1 with some bad luck), but don't mind this idea.

Very keen to see 2 and 3 but as a starter I do like this

Yeap, it could be over after round 1. A potential spin on it could be selecting one driver/team a round (that can only be selected once) and whoever has the most points at the end of the season is the winner.
