Coniglio, Cumming and Callaghan Impress in Match Sim
Isaac Cumming played a starring role in the GIANTS’ match simulation.

Isaac Cumming played a starring role in the GIANTS’ match simulation as the defender looks to again elevate his game in 2023.
After enjoying a breakout season in 2021, Cumming has since developed into one of the GIANTS’ most influential players, averaging 23.5 disposals, 18 kicks and 537.5 meters gained in 2022.

The 24-year-old wasn’t the only defender to impress, with Lachie Whitfield, Lachie Ash and Sam Taylor all making significant contributions throughout the four-quarter contest.

Vice-captain Stephen Coniglio was influential from the outset and spent the majority of the match playing on ball.

Fellow midfielder Finn Callaghan produced his second consecutive standout performance, showcasing his speed and penetrating left foot kick.

Utility Jacob Wehr continues to put his best foot forward, impressing on the wing and using the ball well by hand and foot.

Number one pick Aaron Cadman looked at home playing forward, impressing with his aerial ability and goal conversion.

Jake Riccardi was another to catch the eye, showcasing his versatility in a variety of roles across the ground.

The GIANTS had most of the squad on-hand, with forward Toby Greene watching from the boundary line to manage a recent calf complaint.

The newly appointed GIANTS captain is expected to feature in the practice match against the Suns at Blacktown on March 4.

Melbourne had a match sim on Friday which was kept under wraps a bit. Oliver, Trac and Viney dominant. Grundy spent time in the ruck and forward and kicked 2 goals and gave off another.

On the rookie front, JVR played for the weaker team and unfortunately he did not perform well. Dropped several marks, missed an easy goal and got caught out of position several times. Track watchers were of the opinion that he’s unlikely for a round 1 debut with a fit T Mac and B Brown ahead of him with Fritsch the other main target up forward.

The potential good news is that a rookie smokey has emerged in Judd McVee. He was playing for the stronger team and did not look out of place with track watchers of the opinion that he has been earmarked for Salem’s half-back role who will miss early with his thyroid condition. McVee is a $123,900 DEF/MID.

The other rookie priced player to play well was small forward Kade Chandler. He also played for the stronger team and kicked 2 goals and was involved in several other scoring chains. He’s had a really good pre-season and although he barely featured last season, (activated sub three times), he is a chance of playing round 1. He’s a $123,900 FWD.

Chandler always felt alot more likely than JVR to me (Pickett playing more midfield needs another small goal kicker in the side) can play and is one to watch closely, if Brown,McDonald,Fritsch plus Gawn and Grundy are all out there Van Rooyen is in the magoos, even if one of Brown and TMac doesn't get up he's still probably not in the side.

I'd imagine Trac, Oliver and Viney moving forward when Pickett plays mid.

Yeah, Bowey likely to play a similar role at half-back too. He was on the stronger side yesterday as well.

Still a while to go but based on yesterday the round 1 team could look as follows;

B: Petty, May, Rivers
HB: Brayshaw, Lever, Bowey
C: Langdon, Oliver, Hunter
HF: Neal-Bullen, McDonald, Fritsch
F: Pickett, Brown, Spargo
R: Gawn, Petracca, Viney
I: Grundy, Sparrow, Chandler, McVee
Sub: Harmes/Jordon

Oliver getting twice the midfield role as usual bodes well...

Not necessarily the guys mentioned in this piece, but damn. GWS could be very SC relevant this year.
