Dogs should pick up Oscar McDonald. Shouldn't cost them much and gives them much needed height down back. Otherwise put Naughton/Bruce back and have the other plus Ugle-Hagan and Schache who also can be second ruck.

ESSENDON defender Adam Saad has chosen Carlton as his future home.

AFL.com.au understands Saad is in the process of informing the Bombers and his teammates of his wish to head across town and join the Blues from next season.

Up until recent days the Bombers had remained hopeful in securing the out-of-contract defender but he had indicated he wants to join Carlton who edged out North Melbourne for his services.

A trade will now need to be facilitated between the two arch-rivals. etc

Big blow to the Bombers. Where are they now at, I am wondering? Load up in the draft for the next couple of years? Will be an interesting off-season, with JD and Fantasia also still to decide.

Wonder who will now go to the wing. Docherty or Newman.

Not ideal, but you can't hold players that don't want to be there for too long. Joey may have been a mistake, missing out on 2 1st rounders, most likely leaving, Fantasia looked set to leave last year, but was unable to leave, probably stayed/convinced that was the right option. Unfortunately he's had injuries this year, so trade value diminishes a bit. There could be others that want out. Not a great time for the club. Hopefully as you said they get some decent draft picks/concessions and build on the youth. Get the right coaches in to support Rutten.

Would Petrevski-Seton maybe move into the midfield or forward line maybe?

So with Simpson retiring, 2 spots open in defence for Saad & Newman.

Plowman - Jones - Newman

Docherty - Weitering - Saad

That's a quality defence.

I see Williams playing on a wing so a potential midfield of :-

Walsh - Cripps - Williams
Pittonet - Curnow - Setterfield (or Murphy)

McKay & Casboult as the 2 key fwd targets.

Jack Martin, Petrevski-Seton, Newnes & Betts as the small fwds.

Then you have Gibbons, Williamson (7th defender or wing), Kennedy, Cuningham, De Koning all competing for spots on the bench. Don't see McGovern as best 22 personally.

Plenty to like for the blues in 2021 I think.

Didn't Docherty play a bit of wing in the 2016-17 seasons when he averaged 108 and 114.
Apparently played midfield latter half of 2017, see exert below from the Blues website.

He was the general in Carlton’s compact defence, playing a sweeping role to lead the Club for intercepts (139) and rebound 50s (129).

If that wasn’t enough, Docherty also showed his credentials as a makeshift midfielder in the latter half of the season.
