Sounds like WhiteX pulled up ok

Whitecross gets a leg-up in return to footy

MOST would forgive Brendan Whitecross if he were angry with the football gods.

Since he joined the Hawthorn list at pick No. 29 in the 2007 NAB AFL Draft he's watched from the sidelines as his teammates have played in four Grand Finals for three wins.

He has had two knee reconstructions after suffering torn ACLs in two of the past three finals series.

When they happened he was entrenched in the team as a forward who applied enormous pressure on opponents.

But he has not let that sporting misfortune define him or affect his attitude.

One day after playing for the Box Hill Hawks in his second comeback from a knee injury, he is positive about what lies ahead and pragmatic about what has happened.

"[It's] never good to do a knee, let alone at the business end of the season," Whitecross said.

"[There] is no point feeling sorry for myself. It's about how I can deal with it moving forward and get back as quickly as I can."

On Saturday he played up forward for close to 80 per cent of the game and, in his words, ran around at times like a headless chook, but he came through the game unscathed, an achievement in itself.

"The knee was great today, but the rest of the body was feeling it," Whitecross said.

That soreness was not a feeling he missed but he welcomed returning to the sensation of playing football.

The first contest he had was physical and he was blowing hard but he was not nervous.

He was just a little less instinctive than when at his best until he settled into the game's rhythm.

"As the game went on found myself calming down a bit more and adjusting to the game a bit easier," Whitecross said.

He'd love to play in the NAB Challenge game against St Kilda on Thursday but knows that is unlikely.

Whether he makes a senior return in round one or in round five or six doesn't bother him too much right now.

What he does know is that he'll be doing everything he possibly can to help the club win another flag.

Rather than being burdened by his teammates' success, he has been inspired by it.

"Seeing the success we have had in the past couple of years has spurred me on to make sure I get back to playing footy and enjoying what I do best," Whitecross said.

As for whether his presence could motivate his teammates to win a third successive premiership with him in the side, Whitecross thinks that is nonsense.

"It's not about me," he said.

"As far as getting one [a premiership] for me, I don't think that is the case at all."

He might not think it but you can bet it will be in the back of his best mates minds when the yards become hard mid-season.

Whitecross has many admirers. Now he has the chance to play the game he loves once again.

"I just need to play footy. That is all I need to do now."

Nathan Jones hails Melbourne young gun Christian Salem

MELBOURNE captain Nathan Jones has hailed the improvement of Christian Salem, declaring the teenager integral to the Demons’ new attacking philosophy. The Dees stunned onlookers in Saturday’s win over the Western Bulldogs, replacing last year’s stop-start style with swift, attacking ball movement in a dominant first half. And second-year midfielder Salem was at the heart of it, gathering 24 possessions, nine marks and six tackles in a new counterpunch role off half-back.

“With how we want to move the footy he’s a real key for us down there and he’s shown the ability to run both ways which ‘Roosy’ (coach Paul Roos) really values,” Jones said. “The new role down back, we really see him as a classy player, he’s pretty tough and hard at it and obviously he uses the ball really well. He’s been one of the most impressive over the last two or three months and he’s had a really strong pre-season.”

With the No. 9 draft pick shifted to an orchestrating role, dashing new recruit Heritier Lumumba lighting up a wing and former Blue Jeff Garlett’s speed causing havoc close to goal, Melbourne appears to have added some glitter to its defensive grunt. All signs point to a more offensively aggressive outfit in 2015 after last year’s conservative approach caused some frustration with fans.

“Last year you saw we were able to keep teams to scores we could potentially beat, but we couldn’t kick a winning one ourselves, so we’ve worked really hard on that,” Jones said. “I think we put a lot of effort into our offence over the summer and Roosy initially came in and put a strong focus on defence, which is probably the cornerstone of our game. We had to work on attacking teams and being able to kick winning scores. “Last year we were really stagnant, tended to go sideways and backwards and I think what we’ve really worked on is some real system and a bit of a pattern. “Teams like Geelong and Hawthorn, they’ve got the ability to go really fast, but to also be really composed and control the ball and that’s something we’re working on.””

Melbourne’s last pre-season game comes against Essendon on Friday night. Jones acknowledged the difficulty of facing the drastically weakened Bombers, but said the Demons needed to put that aside. “I really feel for the players at Essendon, but at the same time it’s the card we’ve been dealt. The challenge for our group is not to see it that way, we’ve just got to go out and play the way we want to play,” he said. The match-up means coming face-to-face with former Melbourne players James Magner and Mitch Clisby, with Jones admitting he’d already been in touch with Magner. “He’s one of my best mates. I messaged him the other night ... all I said to him was, ‘Just don’t hurt me before Round 1’.”

I'm a little meh about Salem at the moment.

I can see him being the type of guy that will punch out 1 or 2 good scores before opposition coaches put someone on him to keep him accountable and then really struggles. It's a position that screams look at me to opposition coaches and against quality sides it won't take much for them to shut him completely out of the game IMO. I'd like to see him against a quality team but I believe their next hit out is against a depleted Bombers team which once again might lure us into a false sense of security.

AT $180K he is priced at the top end of rookies which there are a plethora of in the forward line. I'm not saying he's a totally bad pick, I'm saying that the role comes with danger for a young inexperienced player who has been renowned for going missing in games.

Against the Dockers, Salem played on Mundy for a pretty high 92% game time and only managed 9 disposals. He'll be interesting selection that could go either way. Sometimes $70k goes along way around your team.

If you are playing 3 rookies on the ground, I think you almost have to have Salem. There are not that many rookie priced players in the fwdline that will play week in week out. Yep, he is going to cop a 'tag' from time to time, but them's the breaks!

Quality post. I am having a similar thought pattern. I think for every 100 that Salem scores, he will also produce a 50. So I'm thinking he will average around 75 this year which is decent for a player that we are only paying 185k for. Although if Lamb, Lonie, Steele, Daniel, Krak or Lambert play well in NAB3 and get a gig round 1 then I may be tempted to pick one of them and save that 60k+ to spend elsewhere.

I actually think this years forward line is where all the quality rookie priced cows are, possibly even better than the midfield.

I've been slowly coming to the same realisation. It has seen my structure change over the last few weeks.

Absolutely - been at 3/0/5 for a while now, but you need to be sure of having 3 playing rookies, which is why I think you need to start Salem. TheoryCoach is my favourite pastime but as we all know, all will be fulfilled/changed/stuffed when round 1 teams drop

I don't want to eat donuts in my second row rookie forward line, so lets go through them - will they play round 1 and onwards? (imo) :)

- Hogan = yes, kpp but will be picked and play if fit
- Clark = see Hogan
- Salem = yes, playing off the backline and seems to be very important to Melb's structure
- Lamb = high probability, although against McInnes according to LITS (?)
- Karnezis = unsure, the Pies have a few players like him, possible vest?
- Membrey = unsure, kpp but in comp with a few other Saints players for the spot
- Krakouer = needs to be elevated, tough to break into the Port side, possible vest?
- Lambert = needs to be elevated, might be tough to break into the Tigers side
- Saad = needs to be elevated, and in comp with a few other Saints players for the spot
- Steele = unsure, where does he fit into the Giants lineup, possible vest?
- Daniel = big doubts, only played 1 NAB game and has obvious issues (ie tiny)
- Laverde = plays for Essendon and injured
- Lonie = big doubts, very light, possible vest?
- Jack = very fringe, there would have to be injuries before he could break into the Swans 22
- McInnes = possible, behind Lamb for a spot, depends a bit on NicNat fitness
- Langford = plays for Essendon, not sure

Who have I forgotten?

Happy to be disagreed with and not having a go at NT Thunder at all, just my opinion :)

I've been doing some structured sides over in the Rate My Team thread predominantly focusing on Forward Rookies and how to best use them.

You can get some interesting sides onto the park with all your rookies based in the forwards.

At this stage a lot of rookies have question marks over them and your list assessment above looks pretty good. I'd imagine that a midfield list would also look very similar which I'm getting at. The same question marks are over the Heeneys, Ellis Yolman, Anderson, Smith, Boekhorst, Cavka, Amon, Freeman, Miller, Dumont, Vandemberg, Lang, Cockatoo, DeGoey, Cripps and Newton.

There are a couple of others (forwards) up to that $200k range including Ben Reid but when you compare that list with a possible Defence rookie list it really does look promising.

I was just offering another pov on Saad. I may start with him also but I'm just not sure the last NAB game will be the norm, more the exception. I still think he'll average maybe around the 55-65 mark tops.

Lennon also looks ok but may struggle to fit into a fully fit tigers line up.

Another forward rookie option @ $144,700 :D

Tarrant a lock for Roos, says captain Swallow

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2015-03-16/tarrant-a-lock-for-roos

WITH A plethora of tall forwards on its list, North Melbourne captain Andrew Swallow says Robbie Tarrant will play as a key defender this season and is a shoo-in for round one.

Jarrad Waite's off-season signature bolstered a tall forward brigade that already included Drew Petrie, Ben Brown and Aaron Black, putting the squeeze on spots.

But Swallow says Tarrant has been a strong pre-season performer in the back half, and his development is perfect timing to cover the absences of Nathan Grima (back) and Lachie Hansen (hip).

Grima is expected to miss another 10-12 weeks, while Hansen is slated to miss another two, putting him out of the opening match against Adelaide on April 5.

But Swallow says North Melbourne has the depth to fill the void.

"Robbie Tarrant has been training all pre-season down back, so we'll probably pencil him in for a key position spot down back," Swallow told SEN.

"Lachie is starting to move well. I reckon he's a couple of weeks away.

"It'll be nice to get him into some full training and some games, we missed him quite a bit last year.

"But with Robbie Tarrant going back, Joel Tippett as well, and Scott Thompson, we've got enough to cover if Lachie misses a couple early on."

Swallow said the Kangaroos' match committee would have some difficult decisions this season, with Waite and Shaun Higgins bolstering an already deep squad.

The North Melbourne skipper also weighed in on Ryan Crowley's provisional suspension following a positive drugs test.

Swallow said it was a stark reminder how careful players had to be.

"It does get harder and harder every year for players but you've got to be so careful," he said.

"You've got to make sure whatever you put in your body, you tick it off with the doctor.

"At home and you're feeling a bit off and you want a painkiller … you've just got to think twice about it."

Is there a list of defence rookies that have played NAB and look promising for a round 1 start? (A guessing game I know!).

So far I am only confident in Hamling. From reading some comments on this forum it sounds like Goddard won't be starting??

Hamling - 60-80%
Edwards - 30-50%
Saad - 30-50%
Goddard 10-30%
DVR 10-30%
WhiteX - 10-20%

My %'s could be well off and there's probably more but that's the ones i'm working off

Here is my take Bobbie (for what it is worth) :)

- Hamling = fairly confident, seems to have done everything required in the NAB and structure changes at the Dogs mean there are spots available
- Brown N = will play, kpp, not a great scoring history and poor injury history
- Saad = needs to be elevated, don't see where that LTI is (very sketchy info on the Suns ability to elevate as well - ie the BigFooty boards were unsure)
- Goddard H = doubtful, kpp, not sure how he fits into the Saints lineup
- XCross = very doubtful, expect him to play through the VFL first
- Jones Z = very doubtful, hasn't played NAB and not sure on how he breaks into the Swans lineup
- Lever = hasn't played NAB, injured?
- Clurey = may play round 1 and then not play after players come back to Port after injury
- McIntosh = possibly, haven't seen a lot of him though
- McKenzie = to my knowledge he hasn't played NAB so not in the mix
- Maynard = looks to be a VFL player at the moment
- V Rainbow = very doubtful
- **** = doubtful
- Edwards = plays for Essendon, hasn't shown a lot in the NAB
- Wigg = to my knowledge he hasn't played NAB so not in the mix
- Byrne = possibly, although against other players for a spot at the Blues
- Oxley = maybe, although looks to be outside of the mix for the Pies backline
- Durdin = very doubtful
- Johnson A = doubtful

Read this the other day..not sure how long that means lol

Brent Macaffer (knee)
"Brent is medium term injury. He’s still recovering from his knee reconstruction. So he’ll be medium- to longer-term, only because we’re going to give plenty of time. "

Paul Seedsman (hip)
"Paul is in full training. He’s not available to play, meaning he hasn’t done enough conditioning. He won’t be far away at all. He’s relatively available but not for this week (medium-term)."

Matthew Scharenberg (knee)
"Matt, who had a knee reconstruction last August, is in a similar position to Brent Macaffer but he’s probably in advance of Brent. Whilst he’s probably still medium-term because he’s got some work to do, he’s still in pretty good shape. He’ll be relatively soon"

Clinton Young (hamstring)
"Clinton is still medium-term with his hamstring, meaning he’ll be some weeks - we’re not quite sure how many. He’s training but he’s still a fair way off."

Collingwood's injury list explained

In 2015, Collingwood will be using the following method to categorise its injuries:

Short-term
A short-term injury indicates that there is some chance a player will play in the VFL or AFL on the coming weekend, but it is more likely that they won't.

Medium-term
If a player has sustained a medium-term injury, it is considered that he will require more than a two weeks to return to the VFL or the AFL, but the club is unsure exactly how long it will be.

Long-term
If a player has sustained a long-term injury, that means it will be more than six weeks until they play football at either VFL or AFL level.

"We normally talk about how many weeks players are going to miss, but we never know for sure," Director of Football Neil Balme explained.

"It’s always a bit of a guess. This stops us from saying two-to-three weeks, which then turns into 18 weeks, which can quite often happen." - See more at: http://www.collingwoodfc.com.au/season/injury-list#sthash.RlHI04RY.dpuf

I think I am going to reshuffle my structure to allow Macmillan to shift from D5 to D6. Will mean a downgrade somewhere - most likely I will need to wave goodbye to Neale at M5. Damn defence this year!
