First-year tall forward Mitch Georgiades looks on track for a round-one debut after an impressive showing in Port Adelaide’s internal trial on Friday night.
The West Australian started well and got better, flying courageously into marking contests and either plucking grabs or bringing the ball to ground for roving teammates.
His second efforts and ability to compete in the air also stood out, as last year’s No.18 draft pick showed no signs of a player who had missed all of 2019 with a thigh injury.
Fellow top-25 selections Miles Bergman (pick 14) and Dylan Williams (23) also had nice moments.
Playing as a high half-forward, Bergman did not gain much of the footy but when he got it, he used it well, while Williams kicked two goals to half-time, including a nice left-foot snap.
Those two were quieter during the second half, although Williams added another major.
Last year, first-round draftees Connor Rozee, Zak Butters and Xavier Duursma used the summer to push their cases and then not only debuted in Round 1, but played a total of 61 of a possible 66 games.
Twelve months on, after the club’s first competitive hit-out of 2020, Georgiades looks likely to play in the March 21 season-opener against Gold Coast, Bergman will probably be in the mix and Power selectors may have to ponder a shot for Williams too early in the season.
Other highlights included Dan Houston finding plenty of the ball and playing well as a midfielder, and Dixon impressing and looking like he was over his injury troubles.
Ollie Wines (shoulder) and Jackson Mead (hamstring) were the only absentees on the night.
The Advertiser’s other key take-outs from the game were:
■ Veteran Justin Westhoff looked at home playing at centre half-back. He stood recruit Wylie Buzza for long periods and would make the right call whether to mark or spoil. Westhoff has been used down back at times, including in several games last year, and late-match cameos when Port is trying to stem the opposition, but this looks more permanent – at least for now. He also rucked in spurts.
■ After training with the rehabilitation group earlier in pre-season, Jack Watts returned to the field and was on a half-back flank, where he played in last year’s opening two rounds before succumbing to a season-ending leg injury. Port could use his neat kicking.
■ Houston moved from half-back flanker to midfielder midway through last season and looked Port’s best on-baller on Friday night, winning lots of clearances and using his skills in traffic.
■ Brad Ebert was not only back spending some time in the midfield but running around without the helmet he wore last year due to concussion issues.
■ It is early days but Zak Butters looks as though he is ready to take the next step in his development this season. He played mainly as a high half-forward and on a wing and disposed of the ball well.
■ The second half appeared to be a case of mostly AFL players in black versus Magpies players in white. White had led at half-time before some key players switched to the black side. Georgiades wore black, suggesting he would be in the AFL side if round one was next week.
■ Scott Lycett versus Peter Ladhams was a relatively even battle and post-game senior assistant coach Michael Voss said playing them together was definitely a consideration.
■ Father-son draftee Trent Burgoyne bobbed up late to slot a nice set-shot goal from the pocket.
■ Rookie defender Jake Pasini got a taste of what was ahead at AFL level, lining up on Dixon for periods of the second half.
■ Hamish Hartlett and Todd Marshall have been training away from the main group for much of pre-season but both were out there and got a bit of the footy, although their playing time was managed.
■ Duursma was cut open from a head clash and spent time on the bench in the last quarter. That was the only thing resembling an injury that had been reported immediately after the match.

BROWNLOW medallist Tom Mitchell looks on track for a round one return on the strength of his sharp display in Hawthorn's intraclub match on Friday night.
Mitchell played the first three quarters, including a particularly prolific opening half, before literally putting his once-broken left leg on ice in the final term.
He started with the weaker 'blue' side before joining the star-studded 'orange' line-up, which included reigning club champion James Worpel, Chad Wingard, Isaac Smith, James Sicily and Luke Breust.
The Hawks announced post-game that Worpel had added two more years to his contract and was now tied to the club through the 2023 season but it was Mitchell who stole the show.
"(Mitchell) started in the 'twos', then made his way into the 'ones', so he must have got a few touches but it's just good to see him back," Smith said post-match with a grin.
"He's been moving pretty well since Christmas. Who knows when he'll be back but he's out there doing everything, so it's good.
"I think everyone (wants him to play round one) – he's a Brownlow medallist, he can play footy and he certainly makes us better, so when we get him back it'll be great."
Another prominent orange member was recruit Jon Patton, who turned in a powerhouse performance in attack despite the wet conditions at Waverley Park.
Patton steered through a pair of set-shot goals in the first quarter, added a third before half-time, then lined up unsuccessfully for a fourth deep in the fourth term.
That last opportunity came after fellow newcomer Sam Frost went on one of his trademark trots through the middle of the ground and kicked long in Patton's direction.
He terrorised the blue defence with his sheer size – and just as notable was how mobile he was despite spending the past 18 months out recovering from a third knee reconstruction.
"He was all right, wasn't he? He looked good," Smith said of Patton.
"I don't think he's played a game in (almost) two years, so he was asking a few boys what you do before a game, what do you eat and stuff – he reckoned he'd lost it, but he looked like he played all right."
Interestingly, Mitch Lewis, who is set to partner Patton in a land-of-giants forward line this season, played for the blue side as he makes his way back from post-season shoulder surgery.
Smith was outstanding, Tom Scully's famed running power was on show – especially in one passage where he bolted past everyone to present inside 50 – and Jon Ceglar won the ruck battle against Ned Reeves.
Ben McEvoy was stationed in defence, where he ended last season and trained all summer.
Father-son selection Finn Maginness and rookie-listed Emerson Jeka, who were both in the blue team, were the best of the first-year players.
Jack Gunston (ankle), Jaeger O'Meara and Jack Scrimshaw (both managed), Jarman Impey (knee), Josh Morris – who will spend several more weeks out recuperating from minor knee surgery – Dan Howe and Dylan Moore did not play.
Gunston told the crowd at half-time he was "hoping to be ready for round one".

I’ll add my 2c from the infra club today, didn’t watch a great deal of the game as I was busy chatting for most of it.
Georgiades looks a legit footy player. Does everything at full speed and has a wonderful pair of hands. 100% lines up round 1. By far the best of our recruits. Can make a case that all 3 of our recruits that played today could play round 1.
We’ve recruited for speed and scoring power the last 2 years and done it well.
Not much mid time for Rozee, had about 3 x 5 minute bursts but played the same role as he did last year. Put on some good size. Has the makings of a very special player.
Lycett got an absolute bath from Ladhams. So much so that I don’t even think he’s our #1 ruck at this point in time. He did a few nice things around the ground but was soundly thrashed in the middle.
Houston looks right at home in the middle. Put him in your side. If he stays fit he’s a lock for top 6.
Robbie only played about 20 minutes game time and was just going through the motions.
Motlop and Ebert no longer best 22. Playing roles that kids need to play to develop.

Fyfe and Walters were used by Ross Lyon in tandem in the middle last season, but Longmuir yesterday showed a willingness to split his trump cards. One of the pair always operated out of the centre square and the other out of the goal square. Fyfe was dominant as he repeatedly powered away from stoppages in the first half, before trading places with Walters and playing as a deep forward. An unselfish Fyfe, sporting a brace on his reconstructed right shoulder, gave off several shots on goal while playing forward.
Fremantle unveiled their new-look defensive unit, with key defenders Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling and runner Nathan Wilson all set to miss the start of the season. Griffin Logue and former forward Brennan Cox were the key defenders, surrounded by Luke Ryan, Stephen Hill, Ethan Hughes and Conca. First-round draft pick Hayden Young began as part of the second defence before switching sides.
Cam McCarthy has slimmed down to become a wing option, but spent much of the hit-out playing in the secondary forward line. St Kilda recruit Blake Acres impressed both on a wing and inside the centre square, while James Aish, Brett Bewley and Michael Frederickalso got their chance on the wing. One-time wingman Hill impressed in his new role as a running defender, offering plenty of drive and some pinpoint delivery inside 50.
The lighter side. After a long, hot summer on the track everyone deserves a laugh and there were a couple of moments that led to smiles all round. Assistant coach David Hale, part of the Hawthorn outfit that sunk the Dockers in the 2013 decider, replaced injured Darcy in the ruck and made quite a fist of it. The 35-year-old earned a big cheer when he took a mark about 35m from goal and another one when he slotted his set shot.
Highlight of the day went to forward Lachie Schultz, who held on to a one-handed screamer over the top of Bewley. Schultz and Bewley were teammates at Williamstown before swapping life as tradies for their AFL dream on the same day. The moment prompted a quip from one teammate about a plumber and a carpenter.
I know we should only take so much out of these intra clubs but reading this about Fyfe is a little concerning, even though he’s proven to be an effective forward in the past, I would’ve much preferred reading about him dominate in the middle throughout the majority of the game.
Definitely not as locked as he once was for me. Maybe 80/20 now but will start paying more attention to his mid/fwd split throughout the Marsh.

Yeah he’s definitely looking like a breakout candidate.
I wonder if with Cerra likely to join the midfield rotations as well, it reduces the scope for improvement for Brayshaw (and vice versa)...or if its just a matter of Fyfe/Walters spending more time fwd to allow more time in the middle for the young guns ?

3-4 cms shorter than Cripps (depending on what draft report you read)
if he matches his father's debut I might make him captain ?
Cockatoo , Georgiades / King , Rankine might be favourable round 1.
Not sure if Hosie becomes any more important with Brown injured or not.
Rankine at F6 would be ideal if we get that cheap F/M for F8 named Round 1 (have an eye on 4 players) , then would work ideally with Whitfield in the mids and be able to have a look at M9 v F6.
