Any advice regarding formations? I've noticed you can play anywhere from 2 to 5 at the back. Is there any real upside to a particualr formation?

Just put the players you think will score best in your team on field. With no cash gen in this comp, you don't need to be too tactical about it. Having some bench cover for players in later games that don't play may be beneficial, but with unlimited trades at this stage, it doesn't really play into it in Rd 1.

Does anyone know if this is rolling lock out or if team is locked at the start of the round?

The main ways of scoring are :-

Goals scored

GK 14 , D 12 , M 10 , F 8

Goal Assist

GK 8 , D 8 , M 6 , F 6

Clean Sheet

GK 8 , D 6 , M 2

Keeper saving penalties is gold = 8

Player missing penalties is not = -6

Own goal is -6 , penalty conceded -4

YC -2 , RC -6

2 points for playing 60 minutes

So if you can find goal scoring , clean sheet defenders they are awesome (also rare)

Get ready for your players scoring between 4 - 8 each game unless they get goals , assists & clean sheets.

Can fluctuate greatly.

With no salary restraint 3 forwards will be popular

Click on the Help & Game Info section and it explains all the point scoring.

The issues to consider IMO are you have 36 trades for the entire tournament and depending on your selections in the quarter and semi finals you could need a lot of trades for them and the two finals. Second in the first stage some of the stronger teams will probably rest players depending on their situation. Eg If Netherlands win their first two games they then play Qatar and could rest senior players thinking of the finals or only give them half a game.

Sometimes good players in mid tier teams and who have a reasonable Group, score better than top rated players in teams in strong Groups. Take Messi. He has played more World Cup games than any other player at the tournament but only scored 6 goals in all those games and never scored outside Stage 1.

You get 6 trades per round, you can't bank them for whenever you want. It's use them or lose them.

My bad on that. Thanks for the pickup. Probably means that you need to pick players on winning teams as the tournament gets to the finals. If you have a team loaded with players that on teams that eliminated in the quarter or semi finals, then a 6 trade limit means you could be in a situation where you may not have enough to ensure you have a full team going forward?
