I know they don't pick the captain for their actual captaincy skills (see champions like Buddy and Hawkins being named captain despite never having done it for their actual team) but for me I find it very hard to go past Darcy Moore. Feels like sacrilege from a Carlton fan but he speaks incredibly well and comes across as a brilliant motivator for that group.

Toby Greene also an unexpectedly good shout. Can't believe I'm saying that!

From what I can see from the outside, Darcy is definitely a quality person, leader, and player. He would be a very worthy AA captain.

If you king hit someone outside a nightclub, you should never captain an AFL side. Let alone an all Australian side.

Great player. Lots to be desired as a person.

@BigRuss, were you referring to Toby Greene and the incident when he was 20? If so, I understand that it was a horrible thing to be involved in, but he was only 20. People change. People grow up. I think that Toby deserves to be considered for captaincy roles now (such as the one he currently occupies). Everyone deserves second chances in life.

No Dusty stings a little, but I'm otherwise impressed with this team.

For once, I feel like I genuinely can't say that "(insert name here) doesn't deserve to be on here" - everyone on here had a fantastic year and are genuinely deserving.

Thank god they picked actual wingers for once.

Not sure I'd pick Toby for a captain role but otherwise, pretty solid.

Brad Johnson's rolling team on sen was almost spot-on. Only difference I think was he had Harris Andrews down back over Wilkie.
Libba probably the most stiff to miss. Marshall and Dusty unlucky as well. As mentioned above though, not easy to say who they should replace!

@Miss_Brightside , does the fact that Taranto didn't even enter discussion for the AA team (ie wasn't even in the squad) change your opinion on his Brownlow hopes?

You mentioned the players I was thinking may have made it in as well, but the more I look at it, I can't find anyone to drop to fit them in.

I was a bit surprised to see Dusty being mentioned as an omission in a press headline. I feel like he made a late run and wasn’t really in the mix as a popular SC target at any stage (at least until trades had perhaps run out!), which is an imperfect but useful indicator, especially for a player with his SC pedigree.

I had a look at this stats and was surprised. He averaged 24 touches, 1.25 goals, and 6.6 marks and tackles combined (I sometimes combine those two metrics).

Those numbers are within 20% of his 2017 season, in which he broke the record for Brownlow votes and won all the awards.

On that basis I am now struggling to see how he didn’t get a spot!

Sometimes I feel like having an unbelievable season hurts you, as either consciously or subconsciously, you get compared to that high benchmark and not to your peers or on the actual year in question.
If you are consistently elite it works in the opposite way, you get in on weight of past performance, but for Dusty I think they say "he was good but not at his best" vs other guys who were consistently at their best or really stood out vs the competition.

I think you might be right. I do think that young players, or those having a breakout (/breakout to absolutely elite) season have an advantage in awards like the Brownlow. It’s like they benefit from surprising on the upside rather than potentially surprising on the downside.

Probably positive for Daicos and Butters for Brownlow purposes, less so Neale and perhaps Bont.
