I for one will not be starting Titch; my 0 over 30 rule will continue into 2023.

I think Oliver will be my lynchpin; with Steele to back him up with perhaps a couple of midpricers like Hopper and go deep with the rookies. I am personally leaning towards Bont over Macrae in 2023, perhaps as an upgrade target instead of a starting pick, when I normally pick Macrae.
Mitchell doesn't turn 30 until the end of May if that changes anything. :)

I think one of the biggest things I learnt this season is that even the uber consistent superstars will always give you an opportunity to pick them up at a discount somewhere along the line. It's just a matter of how much they hurt you before it happens.
I thought the stars had aligned for me when Cripps went down and I had just enough to jump to a max priced Macrae who had 3/4 150s to start the year... and we all know how his year ended up!

Just on DPP too, other than Bont and Parker I'm really struggling to think of any players that fundamentally changed the upgrade strategy. Have I missed any? I suppose Bailey Smith could have been one if he wasn't Bailey Smith...

One thing that really intruiges me going into next year is the ruck situation. You've got Gawn, Grundy, English and Darcy all getting less ruck time than 2022 (barring injuries). You've then got Witts coming off a 10 pt career best season as a recently turned 30 year old, who slowed down post-bye. We therefore need to look outside those 2022 Top 5 for av. Here are some earlier thoughts about some clubs/guys that intruige me that I feel have a narative to being a premium ruck.

- D Cameron (459k, 85) - Think theres upside worth picking here. Burst out when finally got the No 1 ruck role, then got tired and less of a ruck split as the year went on. Another preseason training in the role should hopefully develop ruckcraft further, as his work around the ground is ample to support a 100+ average, just needs the ruckwork to develop.

- Roma (500k, 92) - Will be very popular I feel, even if doesnt get R/F. No need to explain the narrative, everyone knows the situation. Hopefully Tom Campbell dies.

- Meek (425k, 78) - Those who have seen my previous posts will know how big I am on this guy, has all the attributes to be a premium ruck. My guy has gotten the move to the club that gives him the biggest chance to be the number 1 ruck for the next 5+ years, can't wait to see what he can do with opportunity.

-Ladhams (424k, 78) - Hickey got scorched in the granny and turns 32 in March. How long till the batten gets handed over? A few of my Swans fan friends think this o***eason. Having Dean Cox as your ruck coach is hopefully helping this guy develop ruckcraft, his around the ground work is fine. I've heard he is known to enjoy the off-field stuff a bit so can hopefully pull his head in...

Underpriced guys

-Lycett (377/69) , Hayes (355/65), Teakle (196/36) - Watching preseason with interest, fair bit of talk that Lycett is cooked, could pave the way for an underpriced guy to break out. Maybe not to premium areas but a nice stepping stone.

-Bailey Williams (300/55) - Feel sick saying this, but where on earth did the Rd 23 game come from? Need Nic Nat to die but its happened before...

I think tactical spend in the mids next season will be critical.

Do you pay absolute top dollar and start Laird, Oliver, Neale and Touk (the 120 guys)?

Or do you save $100k on each of those and go for something like the Steele, Walsh, Brayshaw types?

He will probably fly under the radar next pre-season but I think Bont could be a great pick. He battled a shoulder injury, picked up FWD status by playing out of position and yet only went under 100 three times for a 116 average. Now there's no Dunkley, no Hunter and hopefully no niggles...
I will be taking option 2.

Oliver is a must have.

His 40+ possession games are over. Outscores his price but by how much?
Would you consider if 105+ to the bye round then a easy flip to a Laird or Touk.

I am also eager on Serong and Green. The MIdfield mix at GWS, Freo and the Hawks will be the ones i will be watching.

Any interest for Cerra next year, never really got going last year due to injury.

Stewart Sinclair Short Crisp
Oliver Dunkley Steele Walsh Titch Green Serong
Meek / PA or Swans (see what develops)

Don’t see how English would get less ruck time. Lobb acquisition just means he plays that delicious kick behind the ball intercept spot Gawn dominated in at his peak instead of pushing into the forward 50. English & Marshall a fairly obvious fair priced combo I reckon.

I probably wouldn't, if he were in the low $400ks yeh. Will still be a pre-season watch for me but leaning towards a hard no right now. Hopper could go at 95 and start at only $330k, that would be better value.
I'm hoping Dunkley is mid only, everyone will have him otherwise and I think there is a lot of value premo fwd picks next season, Moore, Taranto, Rozee, Marshall, Himmelberg. Setterfield could be a mid price option, should play in his proper position.

Not going anywhere near Short and Crisp, specifically Short unless he is 100% confirmed for a backline spot for the whole season. I like Dawson over Sinclair, he is cheaper and for the first couple of months of the season he played in a less lucrative role before shifting to the backline where he really started to get going, so he is slightly unders. Sinclair had a great season but it looks like Ratts is going to get sacked, bit of instability there, really need to see what the pre-season brings but currently it's probably a no due to price.

With hopper and taranto joining the tigers short could go back to his old role. Wouldnt take much to push him over 100+ average.
Dawson had him from the start last year didnt disapoint.

Hopper, yeap, if he is fit and gets the midfield role we all expect LOCK.

Crisp, plays every game and will bounce back. The finals series he did shine.

Yes Lots of value in the FWD Line, will see who gets the RK/FWD. English and Marshall will be popular

Potentially Short goes back, but he also played forward as well during the second half of the season.

Crisp's durability is a big tick but I don't think he will hurt if you don't have him, the second half of the season was painful. I would rather spend less and take a punt on Whitfield again if he's given a defined role conducive to SC scoring.

I think we will see a lot of teams start these two in the ruck line potentially if the other value fwd picks show enough in the pre-season. You would really want a playing R3 or an F/R in the forwards to cover them as both miss games. Tom Campbell is the major problem for Marshall, if he's played alongside him then Marshall is basically cooked as an selection.

Is English really being considered?
Yes hes getting better every season, yes his scoring potential is amazing but as we have learnt he is made of glass and when he gets injured in a injury that would usually take other players a week to be back to tip top form, he takes weeks (plural) and even then its like injury still plays in his mind when hes back on field as he doesnt get back up to were he would be pre-injury

(Note, i am biased as i love his work and everything BUT he partially burnt me this year)

Which injury are we referring to for the usual one week return to form and what would be the recurrence rate for future seasons for each of his injuries?

Richmond midfield rotation:
  • M. Pickett, T. Taranto, K. McIntosh, S. Bolton, D. Martin, D. Prestia, J. Hopper, L. Baker, J. Short, T. Cotchin, T. Sonsie, J. Graham, J.Ross
Wing:
  • M. Pickett & K. McIntosh
Discounting:
  • S. Bolton & D. Martin (start forward)
  • T. Cotchin (being managed)
Midfield:
  • J.Graham (replaces Lambert)
  • T.Taranto
  • J. Hopper
  • D. Prestia
Comment:
Still have to play: J. Ross, T. Sonsie, L.Baker before J.Short in the midfield

Supercoach:
  • T.Taranto was recruited to add some midfield grunt with Bolton and Martin holding down the forward role.
  • J. Hopper has been added to provide centre clearance work and if he can stay fit will ease the workload on D. Prestia.
  • The recruitment of T. Taranto and J. Hopper will provide a positive impact on the rebound from the halfbacks as opposition players will not be able to have free reign and waltz into the forwards unopposed from the centre breaks.

I'll probably start English full well knowing he will be a trade at some point. He will be at a price where you should be able to sideways him to anyone bar Witts & Gawn off the bat. There should be more points up for grabs given he plays and with Dunkley/Hunter out. Off a full preseason he should be raring to go, there is value in the price given how he went after the flu/hammy/concussion. The main Issue I see with the English selection is the fear of him repeating his 2022 opening, and not owning.

Its been 5 years of most people going set and forget, 4/5 its been the strat, so its a bit of an adjustment period now. Forced trades in the ruck might be the new norm. We have an entire preseason to monitor a few guys to see if put their hand up, otherwise I'd feel forced into English.

Think it may be difficult in defence next season with limited rookies ATM. Only think Chesser and Wilmot are 2 likely that may play round 1 unless some defensive rookies come from the draft?
