Sydney 3 players in the top 10. (includes ineligible players)
Heeney (28) 6th, Gulden (25) 7th, Warner (23) =9th total 76 points.

Pretty sure this a record total for the top 3 players from any one club.
In 2011 Collingwoods top 3 players: Swan (34) 1st, Pendlebury (24) =4th, Cloke =19th (13) totalled 71 points.

In past 54 years .....

In 1972 Melbourne finished fifth bottom (8th, only 12 teams) with 10 wins.
They had 3 players in the top 10 of the Brownlow.
Wells 2nd, Hardeman =3rd, Alves =8th.

In 1980 North Melbourne had 2 in the top 10, and 4 in the top 13.
North finished 4th that season.

In 1985 Footscray had 3 players in the top 9
Hardie 1st, Royal =4th, Wallis =4th (6 players tied in 4th spot)

In 1986 Hawthorn had 3 players in the top 10.
Dipper 1st, Platten 5th, Loveridge 10th.

In 2002 Brisbane had 3 players in the top 11.
Black 1st, Voss =3rd, Headland =6th (6 players tied for 6th.)

In 2004 Brisbane had 3 players in the top 9
Black 6th, Power =7th, Lappin =7th

In 2005 WC had 3 players in the top 8.
Cousins 1st, Kerr 2nd, Judd =7th

Fun little tidbit I picked up was that LDU picked up 18 votes in a team that only won three games.

This would have been enough to win the count outright in 1986, and in a tie as recently as 1993.

Anyway that was good for equal 16th tonight...

45 votes  out of a possible 69.

That will never be beaten surely.
You'd think not, but I think a lot of us would have said the same when Dusty got 36!

At least it went to a deserving winner, but surely the AFL has to think of ways to make the Brownlow more prestigious and legitimate because right now it’s a farce. If they don’t look into it after this year’s count, they never will. One player’s team comes 9th and breaks the record with 38 votes and another annihilates that with 45 votes… on a team that scraped into 8th spot!! I think it’s fair for the umpires to at least look at the stats. It’s hard enough to officiate the game let alone pay close attention to who is playing the best. Both play for huge clubs in Carlton and Collingwood and it would make sense that they are focusing hard on making the right decisions in front of massive crowds and they don’t pay as much attention on which players are doing what. They then revert to the good players which is human nature. Don’t need to pick players purely on stats, but they can help eliminate the howler votes.

Also… Tristan Xerri 1 vote?

Whilst the number of votes for Cripps (and even Daicos) this year is ridiculous I don’t think this year was as a big a howler as last year when Neale won with what most would have described as an average year and certainly not worthy of a brownlow. If they didn’t review it after that then it hard to see it happening after this.

I agree that there must be a better way but I am not sure what that is. I suspect the AFL would not want to take it away from the umpires entirely so perhaps a panel could be installed in each game to assist them. Maybe the goal, boundary and emergency umpires could play a bigger role given they are not fully focus on decision making every minute of the game. They should also have access to the stats.

Yes thats crazy. Further proof to the above.

But Cripps did have a good year and deserved to win.

Daicos rd13 polling when subbed out injured
Harrison Petty 3 votes

There's some BIZARRE votes awarded.

No doubt the right two finished 1st and 2nd, but the path along the way was certainly interesting

One suggestion I heard that I didn't mind was that the umpires submit the players they thought were the best 5 or 6, and then a panel determines the allocation of the 3-2-1. Means that any obvious howler can be either removed or minimised without removing the umpires altogether. I doubt people would be too phased if the only questionable ones were getting 1s, and if Bont isn't in the best 5 players in the umpires eyes then the integrity committee can fire the lot of them!

Therein lies the issue as the target market pandered to have taken far too long to realise that individual awards in a team sport should not be taken seriously. They spend all season complaining that the umpires have no idea what they are doing or about the game but then wait with bated breath for their thoughts on the best players from each match from a group which they perceive to have no credibility but then place such prestige on the honour.

If there was no television coverage of the night and no betting markets for the award, would anybody really care or place it of the utmost importance in comparison to the Coaches Association, Players Association, other media awards, etc?

I await the comments of one Mr Cornes on his in depth review of how Port Adelaide and Kenny have wasted the opportunities given to them with this current squad. On the SCS (Scathing Comments Scale) I figure anything less than a 9.5 out of 10 is him going soft on them.
His brother is the forwards coach so he will never have the guts to do it. Management still with a debt mentality so promote the runner, ex players, etc rather than seeking the most suitable.

So what did Mr Cornes do? He says Port over achieved. Gives them an A minus for the season. Says their list is not deep enough but they did well covering for the injuries they had. Said no one expected them to finish 2nd. But a look at the AFL website staff writers top 8 predictions in March 2024 had Callum Twoomey listing them finishing 2nd. In fact of the 9 writers selections, Port were top 8 for 7 of the 9 writers with 3 of them ranking them top 4. What a joke this bloke is. And he is moving to Ch 7 next year. ABC radio commentary here we come.
