Captains are too scared of ridicule, to actually make the right decision, when declaring.
Australia could have easily pressed harder with the bat, and had an extra 10 overs at England this innings.
Fancy setting them 387 to chase in the 4th innings????!!!!
The brave Captain declares at a chase, where the opposition are in 2 minds. "Can we chase this, or do we just play for survival?".
England were never going to seriously chase this total. Set them 350, and have an extra 10 overs at them, and you 18 out of 20 times win. 1 out of 20 lose, 1 out of 20 draw.
But the mindset is "First we must not lose. Then we shall try and win". A defeatist attitude, especially with England looking so poor with the bat, and the series already decided!
