Moneyball FC
"Championship or Bust"

Coach: Benno
Captains: Nathan Fyfe, Tom Rockliff
Vice-Captains: Sam Mitchell, Dustin Martin, Matthew Boyd, Matt Priddis

The draft:
Moneyball FC created controversy early in the draft by selecting Sam Mitchell with pick 9 and Dustin Martin with 11, overlooking a number of superstar midfielders....twice! MFC's strategy with having the 2nd last pick, was to target the best available Defender, Forward, then ruck. Then if an absolute steal of a midfielder was available early in the 4th, take him (Nat Fyfe). MFC then continued to target a number of premium backs, then solid ruck and forward options. Wasn't until rounds 8,9, then again in 13, 14 and onwards midfielders began to be targeted. MFC were looking for midfielders ready to take the next step or rebounding from a disappointing year. The rest of the best 22 was filled out by picking best available for the needed position. Bench players were chosen for one or more of the following reasons. Young and possibly break out, get consistent games or be a DPP to add flexibility for cover.

Squad:
Defenders:
Sam Mitchell (D/M), Scott D Thompson, Robert Murphy, Luke Hodge, Jake Carlisle, Brian Lake, Sam Day (F/D), Cameron Guthrie, Matthew Jaensch

Midfielders:
Nat Fyfe, Tom Rockliff, Matthew Boyd, Andrew Swallow, Luke Shuey, Matt Priddis, Daniel Hannebery, David Zaharakis, Jackson Macrae, Jobe Watson

Ruck:
Nic Naitanui, Jarrod Witts

Forwards:
Dustin Martin (M/F), Matthew Pavlich, Steven Motlop, David Hale (R/F), Josh Caddy (M/F), Lindsay Thomas, Nick Riewoldt, James Podsiadly, Jeremy McGovern

Trade Announcements:

09/02/14
Moneyball FC are pleased to announce the arrivals of Shane Mumford and Robert Murphy to the club. In a blockbuster trade with the Vindicators, MFC acquired the players in Exchange for Billy Longer, Jack Darling and Michael Hibberd. MFC are extremely pleased with the addition of the gun ruckman after searching for an R2 ever since the completion of draft. The trade now allows David Hale to play up forward in the teams preferred position for him. The club understand that Murphy will be out for the start of the season, but feel they have the defensive depth to be able to cover him. While it's disappointing to give up some young assets in Darling, Longer, Hibberd MFC feel the trade has greatly benefited and strengthened the side. Rumours have it that they are now targeting a Premium Forward and Premium midfielder.

Trade review: This trade set up MFC's season and future trades. Mumford came out of the gate averaging 150 after three rounds. Murphy was solid down back, but not as good as Hibberd. Daring improved while longer hasn't contributed much. MFC sees this as a huge win due to Mumford high value.

29/04/14
MFC today welcome injured star Matthew Leuenberger, star forward Matthew Pavlich, star midfielder Matthew Priddis and superstar midfielder Tom Rockliff. Departing MFC in superstar ruckman Shane Mumford, midfielders Andrew Gaff, Ryan Bastinac. The club is extremely happy with this trade. Making significant upgrades in the midfield and forward lines. While it was difficult to let go of one of the clubs best player in Mumford, the club hopes Leuenberger will return from injury soon to fill the ruck void. The team are hoping this trade is a game changer and that missing piece of the puzzle that will lift them from 2nd last on the ladder up into finals contention.

Trade Review: Buy low, Sell high. With Mumford averaging 150 he was shipped out brining in much needed upgrades up forward and in the midfield. This trade was a steal for the club with Mumford eventually out for 6 weeks, followed by great seasons by Priddis and Pavlich. Rockliff eventually became one of the best players in the game. Leuenberger was eventually traded later on before playing a game.

18/06/14
Dylan Shiel and Chris Dawes depart MFC in a deal that has landed veteran Nick Riewoldt. With a large number of premium midfielders shiel was struggling to remain in the best 22 each week. The club looking for a premium forward has decided to take a punt on Saint Nick who has been in poor form recently and hope he's able to turn it around with a change of scenery at a new club.

Trade Review: Riewoldt has provided some good scores up forward which was needed. Shiel has produced well, but his absents wasn't missed due to the midfield depth. Dawes has since played average and would have struggled to be in MFC's best 22.

03/07/14
MFC finally complete their backline with the addition of Luke Hodge from the Vindicators. Departing the club is injured ruckman Matthew Leuenberger and recently acquired Eric MacKenzie. Due to Witts' recent form the club decided the big Berger was expendable if it landed a premium defender. Cyril Rioli was included in the deal but the injured M/F is unlikely to ever debut for MFC.

Trade review: MFC gave up players with pretty much no value to the team. Shipped out inured ruck Leuenberger who hadn't played a game and the club was coping without just fine, and the recently drafted MacKenzie. The deal brought in a veteran in Hodge who completed the backline and helped stabilise it after a lot of inconsistent scores down back.

Delistings:
M.Clark (retired)
A.Edwards (Injured/Not selected)
V.Michie (Injury/Poor form)
R.Henderson (LTI)
S.Docherty (Injured/Not selected)
A.Black (Poor form)
A.Schnieder (Poor form/Injured)
D.Currie (Poor form/Not selected)

Mini-Draft 1:

Round 1-M.Jaensch
Starting the season well, Jaensch adds some depth to the backline that is still missing a number of players for a few more weeks. Hopefully can develop into a permanent F5-6 for the team.

Selection Review: Jaensch was a great pick up at number two in the draft. Continued his scoring output. Has dropped off at times but still remains a scoring threat each week.

Round 2- J.Macrae
Young gun hopefully takes the next step this season after an impressive start. Will get games early for MFC helping to cover injuries and suspensions. May use this opportunity to cement a place in the best 22.

Selection review: An absolute steal in the second round, has found a permanent place in the midfield and averaging around 100

Round 3- D.Currie
Unlikely to play many games for MFC, but adds some added security on the bench behind Nic Nat and Mummy.

Selection review: Didn't offer much to MFC and was eventually delisted.

Mini-Draft 2

Round 1- C.Dawes
Coming back into Melbourne's squad, Dawes has been picked up coming off a score of 110. MFC are in desperate need of forwards hopes Dawes can act as some handy cover for the teams forward line that is struggling with injuries and suspension, and hope he may possibly develop into our F6.

Selection Review: Played some good games for MFC up forward at a time when the team was struggling. Eventually traded in a package for Nick Riewoldt.

Round 2- L.Picken
The tagged has started the season with an average of 85. While shutting down the opposition has still managed to find a way to score well in supercoach. Slots into F6 to give MFC a backline of players all averaging atleast 83.5! Giving MFC 6 of the best 39 backmen!

Selection Review: Declined his scoring once selected. Not in the best 22, but did produce a few good scores when needed.

Mini-Draft 3

Round 1- J.Podsiadly
If you exclude his first few games he is averaging in the 80's. Has the ability to go big and finding some form. Should be in MFC's best 22 for the time being.

Selection review: Maintained his form, had a rough patch but produced some great scores, fighting it out with a few others for a spot in the best 22 but great to have a bit of depth

Round 2- A.Schnieder
Still searching for some solid forward line players, could be the answer.

Selection review: Scored poorly, was injured and eventually delisted, may be viewed as a wasted pick

Round 3- M.Walters
Out injured. May get a game near the end of the season.

Selection review: Yet to debut but rehab is going well, expected to be back by the end of the season.

Mini-Draft 4

Round 1- J.McGovern
Averaging in the high 80's MFC hopes he is the missing piece in the teams puzzle and will slot into the best 22 in F6.

Selection review: Debut was shocking being subbed out after playing down back. Went on to score well again when up forward. A good selection as long as he plays in the forward line. A best 22 player

Round 2- E.MacKenzie
Averaging in the 70's but scores a few 100's in recent weeks, will provide some bench cover.

Selection review: Had one shocking game for MFC and was eventfully traded to land Luke Hodge.

Round 3- J.Watson
Out injured for an extended period of time. An investment selection Incase MFC makes it down to the very end of the season, could become an X-Factor if MFC make it deep into the finals.

Selection review: An X-Factor in the finals.
