Penalty shootouts in hockey are far superior to soccer. I wonder if there's a way to make soccer ones similar?
They had it in the NASL when Pele was playing for the Cosmos.

Player started 35 yards out and had 5 seconds to beat the keeper.

MSL abandoned the idea 20 years ago

Just heard a remarkable comment on the cycling coverage from Anna Meares - saying the women's sprint times have come down about half a second since her last competition in 2012.

In 2012 the fastest sprint in qualifying was Victoria Pendleton in 10.78. So it's a pretty similar length to the 100m in athletics. Which, for the women, hasn't been touched in something like 30 years. Can you imagine half a second coming off it in that amount of time?

Give the women robot legs and it might have happened. The technology improvements in bikes are the main reason times have come down so much. I think shoe technology is also improving, which is why there has been a lot of Olympic records, but not to the same level.
