Something just doesn't seem to add up here...
From that Essendon statement:
"The Board made clear that, despite these not being views that Andrew Thorburn has expressed personally and that were also made prior to him taking up his role as Chairman, he couldn’t continue to serve in his dual roles at the Essendon Football Club and as Chairman of City on the Hill"

Are they saying that, despite these views not being Thorburn's and despite the fact that they were published well before he was chair of the other organisation, someone being able to pull that content from a website ("publicly available") means these views now become representative of him and thus flow to Essendon as a result?

And this comes out the day he starts? Feels like a board hatchet job by somebody who never wanted him to begin with.

It would almost be like telling a football department employee "because your club was involved in (insert scandal here... salary cap rorting/supplements/racism etc.) before you ever worked there, we can't now hire you".

Sounds like a terrible person in general and it's astounding a club could hire such a person knowing his history including and beyond his religion.

"despite these not being views that Andrew Thorburn has expressed personally"

He not only didn't condemn the comments, his leaving statement said his Christian faith wasn't tolerated in the public square, so he doubled down.
The sacking isn't the surprise but the appointment was.
My work place has a million statements and policies on inclusiveness and drug use and prejudice etc, etc. Yet I was never asked what I thought of any of them when I got the job.
I just happen to believe in inclusiveness anyway so no problem for me but it's mostly just to appease. I could be the biggest nazi in the world as long as no one finds out.
I do have a problem with football clubs using their players for social causes. Tolerance has to go both ways. Just because I'm happy to play sport with a liberal voter doesn't mean I should have to wear a blue tie when I play to represent a minority group.

ZAINE Cordy will join St Kilda as an unrestricted free agent this week.

The Western Bulldogs premiership player will make the switch to the Saints, who have identified Cordy as a defensive option for them.

The move was reported by AFL.com.au on Tuesday and confirmed by the clubs on Wednesday morning, with the Dogs not receiving a compensation pick in return after they signed Liam Jones as an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday.

Cordy played 118 games for the Dogs after being a father-son selection at the 2014 NAB AFL Draft.

FREMANTLE pair Griffin Logue and Darcy Tucker will join North Melbourne after a deal was agreed upon for the pair to land at the Roos.

Logue is out of contract and has been lured on a five-year deal to the Roos, while Tucker was contracted for next year but had a pull back to Victoria which the Dockers were open to accommodate.

In a deal understood to be agreed upon, the Roos will pick up Logue, Tucker and Fremantle's future third-round selection in exchange for a future second-round, third-round and fourth-round picks.

TRADE TRACKER Every pick swap and free agency move

The future second and future third-round selections headed to Fremantle were via the AFL's assistance package for North Melbourne, which the League gave to the Roos on the proviso they were used in trades for at least one player during this period.

The selections will be tied to the Roos' finishing position next year.

The Dockers will pick up the selections and boost their draft hand for 2023's strong pool having been in a difficult negotiating position given North Melbourne has the first pick in the pre-season draft if a deal for Logue wasn't executed.

As AFL.com.au reported on Tuesday, the Dockers also picked up a future third-round selection from Carlton in exchange for wingman Blake Acres.

Logue played 64 games for the Dockers after being a top-10 pick in 2016, while Tucker played 108 games for the club, including 14 this season.

JACK Bowes has chosen Geelong as his preferred club next year, choosing the premiers ahead of Essendon and Hawthorn.

The Gold Coast midfielder has been deciding his future in recent days and has settled on the Cats as his new football home.

The Cats would also pick up draft selection No.7 as a sweetener, with AFL.com.au revealing last month that the Suns would use the top pick as an enticement to create a market for Bowes, who has two back-ended years of his contract left worth up around $1.6 million.

Geelong had long shown interest in the Sun, who is expected to take up a four-year deal at the Cats

It is a coup for the Cats after their premiership win and could also see the club narrow in on potential draft prospect Jhye Clark, a local from the Geelong Falcons who is expected to be around that area of the draft.

They are also keen to land 2020 first-round picks Tanner Bruhn and Ollie Henry from GWS and Collingwood respectively, with the Cats looking to do deals for the pair.

Bowes has played 83 games for the Suns after being an Academy selection and top-10 pick in 2016 and is looking to play as a big-bodied midfielder.

Premiers getting up to three high potential players plus top 10 pick for nothing. Something is seriously wrong with this current system.

I can see why you would pick the Cats - Premiers, rabble or racists - pretty easy choice. Not sure he'd be first 22 at the Cats though with their probable 2023 list, might be in for more VFL games.

I remember a period of time - think it was 2000-2009? - where every team played in at least a prelim final and the AFL loved trumpeting this wherever they could. Hard to see that kind of parity returning with free agency.

Pick 7 was really just a sweetener so somebody would pick up the tab for Bowes overpriced contract.

Geelong have effectively bought it for 1.6M of salary cap - power to them if that's what they want to do.

They were saying the Cats would likely add two years and 400K to it. A 4 year 500K deal seems much more reasonable.
