The Crows are here ...(must have caught the bus)
... and have some work to do if they want to jostle their way up the draft order to get their hands on some of the highly-rated South Australian talent on offer in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

They've missed the sudden downpour of trades but will no doubt waste no time in trying to claw their way up from pick No.8.

What's still to come?

There's a feeling that something big, something out of left field is still to come.

The Swans have been here all day and have been known to move stealthily.

Carlton's media staff, of which there are several, have just arrived.

Do the Suns, armed with three picks inside the top six, make a play for Carlton's no.1 selection.

Adelaide has pick no.8 at this stage, which won't be enough one of the gun South Australians tipped to go early in the draft. They're in the building and need to do something, with pick no.5 now safely in Port Adelaide's keeping.

Wow look at all those trades pour in except the most important one. Hurry up Shiel and Essendon!
There has been a lot of mexican stando*** this week that all have been resolved today. I just can't see the big one falling over at the end.

So is it Gold Coast, Port or the Giants who are making a play for our number 1 pick? I can't see any other clubs in a position to.

If it involves Shiel , I can understand GWS interest.

Not sure of any players from Port or the Suns though that are of interest to Carlton.

I agree re players,,but more picks at a slightly lower value might be and they are the only clubs who could even conceivably do anything.

Either way, it probably won't happen today given picks can be swapped right up and including draft night. Still not sure it will happen but I wouldn't and Carlton shouldn't completely discount it. I just get the feeling something is brewing...

If Carlton is set on taking Walsh , maybe they trade it to Adelaide/Port (to take Lukosious or Rankine) but then you would need to get # 2 from Gold Coast.

Talk on 5AA that Lukosious , Rankine , Rozee will go 2 to 4 (SA bias of course) , I don't know enough about the Kings and Smith.

EDIT surely the Sun's go the King twins after losing Lynch & May so maybe they swap Pick 6 (been to 4/5 clubs already today)

State of play

So we have four and a half hours to go and there is a bit to happen after the craziness of earlier this afternoon when six deals went down in 40 minutes, with the much-traveled pick no.6 leading the way.

Dylan Shiel remains a Giant and there is increased uncertainty that Essendon can do the deal. The Blues are lurking, seeking to steal him away from the clutches of the Bombers like they did with Craig Bradley more than 30 years ago.

Dayne Beams is still a Lion. Collingwood is finding it harder than ever to get the deal done.

Tim Kelly is still a Cat. As recently as today he was on the phone to the cats, pleading with them to allow him to break his cibtract and return to Western Australia. The Cats are still holding firm.

Why don't they just allocate players to the club nearest to their Mum's house? Seems most get "homesick" and move back after a year or so...
exactly

getting paid $ 80 k a year for a sport they love , maybe AFL is a lot harder for these "mummy" boys.

You think they would be glad to leave home , just use Skype , FaceTime , Twitter etc

how do the 18yo that join the defence force for 4 years cope ?

Brisbane is being difficult because they're salty from giving us De Goey, Cripps and Greenwood for an injury prone mid that hasn't gotten them anywhere lol.

Apparently we have upped our offer to 2018 1st round pick + 2019 1st round pick for Beams + Pick 30 + Pick 55

Then Brisbane traded pick 55, then Brisbane took out pick 30 out of the equation too...

Honestly feel like we're terrible negotiators. We gave away our entire hand from the get go. If we started at pick 18 and persevered until now,
pick 18 + 2019 2nd probably would get it over the line.

We also have no backup plan either lol. We can't take 18 to the draft as it will be eaten up by the Quaynor selection.

Geelong have handled themselves disgracefully regarding Kelly. He needs to go home to WA for family reasons, It's not like he is some homesick teenager, there is genuine family issues and his family needs to be back in WA.

Understand he is contracted... But West Coast have been more than fair in their offer of picks 20 & 22 (Which is the equivalent of Pick 6). Yet Geelong are demanding those picks and Our first rounder next year as well... that is ludiicrous!!

They never had any intention of trading him. Funny that when the shoe was on the other foot and they wanted a homesick Dangerfield & a homesick Ablett, they where pleading for ADE & GCS to help them and be reasonable in their dealings.

Really feel for Tim and his family, But hope we have the sense to pass on Geelong's crazy demands, use the picks to great effect in this draft and then watch Kelly walk via the draft next year for nothing.

Looking at Number 1 picks (and who you could have got instead). I think we overstate the benefit of number 1 versus lots of picks, to allow hits and misses, in the top 30.

2017 Rayner (Stephenson 6, Higgins 17, Kelly 24)

2016 McGrath (Parfitt, Witherden and Fisher all mid-twenties)

2015 Weitering (Curnow 12, Himmelberg 16, Gresham 18)

2014 McCartin (Brayshaw 3, DeGoey 5, Heeney 18)

2013 Boyd (Kelly 2, Bontempelli 4, Sheed 11, Cripps 13, M.Crouch 21, Merrett 26)

2012 Whitfield (Grundy 18)

2011 Patton (Coniglio 2, Wingard 6, Greene 11, Smith 14)

2010 Swallow (Gaff 4, Polec 5, Heppell 11, Darling 26, Parker 40)

2009 Scully (Martin 3, Fyfe 20)

2008 Watts (Naitanui 2, Hurley 5, Ziebel 9, Davis 10, Sidebottom 11, Shuey 18, Beams 29, Hanneberry 30)

2007 Kreuzer (Cotchin 2, Danger 10, Rioli 12, Ward 19, Westhoff 33, Steven 42

2006 Gibbs (Selwood 7, J.Riewoldt 13, Goldstein 37, Kennedy (Syd) 40, Gray 55)

2005 Murphy (Kennedy (WC) 4, Pendles 5, Higgins 11, Hurn 13, Birchall 14

2004 Deledio (Roughead 2, Griffen 3, Franklin 5, Lewis 7)

I think the last two (Rayner and McGrath) might turn out to be marginally the best in their cohort and Whitfield may end up challenging Grundy for the best of 2012 but you probably have to go back to 2003 to find a number 1 pick (Adam Cooney) who was the best (at least he got a Brownlow) in his cohort and even injury got him in the end. The rest suggest No1 pick is still a bit of a lottery. The more (decent) tickets in the lottery the better.
