Due to some fairly significant changes to the 2023 competition, I have decided to start a new thread for this year.

This competition is suited for a wide range of people, from die hard cycling fans to casual fans with minimal knowledge, or even people who know nothing at all about the sport and want to learn - everyone is welcome. You can participate with minimal time commitment, and as scoring is only based on your best results, a few bad events don't count against you. You can sign up at any time - our winner last season missed the first four events, so any time is a good time to enter.

This competition is for men's professional cycling only. This is not a sexist thing, there was not enough interest in also including women's races when asked last year.

I am more than happy for anyone, participant or not to post anything here about cycling, even about stuff not covered by the events covered - it's the most logical topic to do so on these forums.

As mentioned, there are a few changes from 2023 (the 2023 topic can be found here), the main ones are as follows:

  • A much shorter event calendar (17 events plus 4 bonus events which will not be ranked).
  • Leaderboard now being based on your points from your best 10 events rather than best 12.
  • Restrictions on selection of favourites in many events. Selections were near identical in many races last season and this should change things up a bit. It will make selecting a winner so much more satisfying.
  • Improved result tracking. Every entrant will have a handy dashboard to help track past results.
  • An achievement system. Get good results and participate in events to unlock achievements throughout the season. See if you can collect all 32! Specific details of how to earn each achievement will not be revealed until someone obtains each one, however it's likely you'll be able to figure out quite a few of them easily.
  • The opportunity to compete for a nation of your choice. Not literally, but this will show up in your dashboard and will affect a couple of non-ranking events.
  • All entries are to be submitted to me via PM rather than posted here. I will post my selections here prior to each race for openness, however any selections made in this topic by others will not be entered into the competition.

The ranking events that will be held in 2024 are as follows:

1703506519711.png

As mentioned, there will also be four bonus (non-ranking) events this year. These are:

  • National Championships Road Race and Individual Time Trial. The date for this event will vary depending on which country you choose to represent. The first nation to hold these in 2024 I believe will be Australia, which will be held in the first week of January (this is why I have had to create the topic so early, despite the first ranking events being held in March).
  • Olympic Games Road Race and Individual Time Trial. These will be held in late July / early August in between the Tour de France and the Vuelta a Espana.
Details on the number of selections for each of these events and the points available will be detailed in the next post, as this differs between events.

The leaderboard will be based on points from your best 10 ranking event points for the year. Points will not roll over to/from other seasons, but will reset at the end of each season. You will still be entered on the leaderboard if you do not enter at least 10 events, however the more events you enter will increase your chances to rank higher.

I highly recommend using Pro Cycling Stats for obtaining startlists for each of these events. Unfortunately, the startlist is often only fully complete a day or so before many events, however generally many riders will be shown prior to this.

Grand Tour points scoring - Events in GREEN in the calendar above:

1703509197543.png

You will select six riders, with no restrictions on which riders can be selected. This is unchanged from 2023.

Classification points are awarded to the rankings in the Points and KOM (climbing) categories at the completion of the event.

World Championships points scoring - Events in PINK in the calendar above:

1703509370602.png

You will select three riders, with no restrictions on which riders can be selected. This is unchanged from 2023.

Monuments points scoring - Events in BLUE in the calendar above:

1703509517773.png

You will select three riders, with restrictions on which riders can be selected. Points have changed from 2023. A few days prior to each monument, I will nominate five riders who are among the favourites for the race. You may only select a maximum of ONE out of these five riders among your three selections. Your other selections are unrestricted from anyone else who is competing.

Tour points scoring - Events in YELLOW in the calendar above:

1703509818389.png

You will select four riders, with restrictions on which riders can be selected. Points have changed from 2023. A few days prior to each tour, I will nominate five riders who are among the favourites for the race. You may only select a maximum of ONE out of these five riders among your three selections. Your other selections are unrestricted from anyone else who is competing.

Classification points are awarded to the rankings in the Points and KOM (climbing) categories at the completion of the event (where awarded).

Olympic Games:

You will select one rider in both the men's road race and men's ITT. No points are scored, but there'll be a visual change to your dashboard for the next four years if your rider manages to collect a medal. As the Olympics are only held once every four years, it's potentially a long time you can have bragging rights over everyone else.

National Championships:

As mentioned, I have requested each participant select a nation to represent. This will show up on your dashboard, and your goal is to try and select the national champion from that nation in both the road race and the individual time trial. You will select one rider in each event. No points are awarded for doing so, however you will get a visual cue on your dashboard for the next year if you have managed to select the right winner for bragging rights.

Currently the following people have nominated a nation. I have also given my best indication of when the national championships will be held:

Ironhawk, @Dravid, @Aston : Australia. ITT - 4th January, Road Race - 7th January

@Woosie : New Zealand. ITT - 8th February, Road Race - 10th February

@tso : United Kingdom. ITT - 20th June, Road Race - 23rd June

@Bonaparte : Italy. ITT - 21st June, Road Race - 23rd June

@chels : Andorra. I can't find any info on an Andorran national championship, so I will let you select the winner of either of the neighbouring nations - France or Spain, but you will still represent Andorra. France: ITT - 20th June, Road Race - 23rd June. Spain: ITT - 21st June, Road Race - 23rd June. Whichever of the two you choose you will have to pick every year. Please let me know ASAP.

If any of you want to select a different nation, please let me know ASAP. You will not be able to change year on year, or mid year.

For anyone not on the list above who is interested in participating, please let me know which country you would like to represent and I will confirm dates and entry details with you. There is no restriction on how many people can represent any nation.

An example dashboard is attached. The 32 blank squares are the achievements mentioned above - anyone who participated in 2023 most likely would have earned some of these achievements, however I am not backdating them. These are an image which describes or relates to the achievement. These achievements can start to be earned from the first race in 2024.

I was originally going to release the dashboard for everyone who had participated in 2023 today, however I've decided I'll post these after the first results of 2024 instead, once they get a bit more meaningful data.

Hopefully that is all clear. If there are any questions, please ask.

Remember that entries from now on are to be sent via PM.

Good luck in 2024, hopefully it'll be a really competitive season.

A lot to take onboard with a hangover @Ironhawk . Stefan Ancion, perhaps Andorra's best road racer, competed in 2003 in the Spanish National Championship U23 section. He was one of those with a DNF recorded against his name. That and the preference for the Catalan language suggests participation in the Spanish Nationals is preferable.

Andorra is stronger (albeit "stronger"is a relative term) in off-road events. Oscar Cabanas (32) placed 34th in the Spanish ME ITT this year. But I am sure you knew that. :ROFLMAO:

Purely out of interest Australian Rules is popular and is growing. Naturally The Swans are the best supported team, nobody likes Collingwood, and wearing an Essendon guernsey in public is a punishable offence. And, yes; I made the last sentence up. Currently Tic Tapa UE Santa Coloma is leading the top league (footystats.org/andorra/primera-divisio).

I think I like Andorra. :p

Yeah, it is a lot to read, I knew it would end up a wall of text, and I apologise for that, but I think you'll find the changes made improve on things from last year. I'll tag in people who have expressed an interest in participating just prior to the next races, however it is mainly the Australia and Kiwi reps who have national championship races prior to the first ranking event who may need to read up on that bit.

Anyone else who happens to see this topic who thinks it all seems too complicated, trust me, it's not. You pick anywhere up to six riders in each race based on race type, I will tell you the amount you need to choose when tagging you here a few days before each event. I'll handle the rest, and you'll pick things up quickly.

Australian Road Nationals Championships

@Dravid @Aston

The first national championships of the season will commence in 3 days time. Please select one rider in the Individual Time Trial (to be held on 4th January) and Road Race (to be held on 7th January) and send this to me via PM. No rush, just make sure this is submitted prior to the relevant race commencement.

This is also open to anybody else to enter as well who wants to represent Australia in this competition. If you would prefer another nation, their national championships will be held later in the year, I can advise of the relevant date if you let me know which nation you choose. Just a reminder this is a bonus competition only (not part of the overall rankings), but it's still worth entering.

@bunlit, as a competitor last year, I have tagged you into this topic in case you were interested in participating again this season and hadn't seen the topic. Hoping to see you again this year, but if you are not interested, that's also OK.

As I have selected Australia, I will also be making selections in this race.

For the time trial, I will be selecting Luke Plapp. He is a previous winner of the time trial in 2021 on this course and two of the three riders who beat him last year are not competing. He's more experienced now than when he won the ITT as a 20 year old and has good form on the course in previous seasons.
https://www.procyclingstats.com/race/australian-open-road-championships-itt/2024/startlist

For the road race, I probably should be selecting Plapp here as well, as he has won the road race for the last two years. He is the favourite and is in form after recently easily winning the Tour of Bright, destroying the previous record for the climb to Mt Buffalo. Instead I'm going to go for an upset and select Matt Dinham. He finished top 10 in the world championships last year, and was able to keep up with all except the top 4 best riders in the world, and was the only rider from the breakaway which had been in front for 178km not to get dropped when it was caught (the breakaway was in front for almost longer than the entire NC race, which is 185km). Slightly different course in Australia compared to the worlds, but Dinham did come a narrow 2nd in the U23 race back in 2022 and should be much improved this year after a year on a world tour team.

Note: The startlists above are not yet available (no riders currently listed), but I have provided links which should (hopefully) provide a full list of riders a day or so before the event.

Good luck everyone. I won't be providing detailed thoughts like this before every race, especially when we are competing for points, but will be publicly listing my picks prior to each race (and before I read any entries submitted).

Hey @Ironhawk can I participate? I watched this thread a little last year, and was keen to join once the new year ticked over; then saw your post just before.

I'm happy to go up against @tso for the UK National Championships.

Love your work, and can't wait to participate if possible.

Picks are in for the time trial which started a few minutes ago. Dravid, Aston and myself have all selected Luke Plapp. I'll post results later.

Not too late for anyone new who wants to support Australia to select for the road race on Sunday.

Road race tips are in. Matt Dinham from myself as noted previously, Luke Plapp to complete the double and win a third national title in a row for both Dravid and Aston.

The race will start in an hour or so. You can catch the final couple of laps of the women's race before hand on SBS now, followed by the men's. The women's has been a good race so far and it has just started raining - should be an interesting finish and hopefully the same with the men's race.

Edit: 100km to go. Plapp looking very good. Dinham didn't start the race.

Race almost done... Only thing that will stop Plapp is the team telling him to let his team mate win

Dominant from Jayco Alula. 1-2-3. Plapp and Harper with a 6+ minute break on third, nobody could match them from early in the race when they established that lead.

My biggest worry with Plapp was team orders and that they may want to reward a different winner for the team, but Plapp likely would have won easily head to head if he was on a different team to Harper. He seemed to be in better shape of the two.

Well done to Dravid and Aston on selecting the double.

Not sure if anyone saw the Tour Down Under today, but today's stage winner Isaac Del Toro looks like he will be a very good rider, he is only 20 years old.

Probably not completely unexpected he did well after winning the Tour de l'Avenir last year, definitely one to consider in future events.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race starts in around 15-20 mins (on 7 Mate for anyone wanting to watch in Australia). Any predictions for a winner?

I always find this a difficult race to predict, but I'll choose Biniam Girmay. He won the Surf Coast Classic a couple of days ago, so he is in form, but the four Challambra Crescent climbs may be a bit steep for him, if he is in the lead group over that climb on the last lap, he's a very good chance.
