2020 CRYSTAL BALL

FOOTY IS BACK
We’ve waited longer than Phil for his Friday night fish & chips, but at long last Round 2 of Season 2020 is due to get underway. And while the anticipation for the AFL restart might be high, it’s nothing compared to the hype surrounding the launch of the SuperCoach Scores Ultimate League.

The pinnacle of fantasy football, the SCSUL pits 10 expert coaches against each other in the ultimate coaching challenge. We saw a range of different strategies throughout the initial drafts, from Tim blowing half his salary on three players, to Ken and Tails keeping some cap space spare for future moves.

At the Official Season Launch we surveyed the 10 coaches on their predictions for the upcoming year, and if their responses are anything to go by, the race for inaugural SCSUL Premiership is wide open. Seven different teams were tipped by the coaches to win the 2020 flag, with no team receiving more than two votes. It could be heartache for the cashed-up Giants though – the club received five votes to finish as this year’s Runner Up.

There was far less variation in some other areas however. Ken’s youthful approach has his Jabukanji Stingers clear Wooden Spoon favourites. The SCSUL Brownlow seems a foregone conclusion as well, with the league’s highest paid player, the Giant’s Brodie Grundy, unanimously tipped to take home the award. Sportsbet have even made the extraordinary decision to not offer markets featuring Grundy, a call which has outraged Immortals young gun Jaidyn Stephenson, who had been relying on Grundy to anchor his multis.

Good luck to all – and may the best coach win.

Ash – Neptune Knights
SCSUL Premier:
Roppongian Rangers
Runner up: Goodie’s Giants
Wooden Spoon: Jabukanji Stingers
SCSUL Brownlow: Brodie Grundy – Goodie’s Giants

SCSUL Premier:
Jordan's Jets. Appeared to have a very clear, selective strategy through the drafts and auctions, and prior experience could get him across the line.
Runner up: TailsPower. The best ruck line in the comp, and appeared well-researched across the board. Just needs to get some more of that cap spent and could be a real contender.

SCSUL Brownlow: Brodie Grundy – Goodie’s Giants

2020 SLIDING DOORS

With the SCSUL season passing it's halfway point it's time for everyone's favourite column, Sliding Doors. Find out what SCSUL Media has to say about your club below:

Arcadia Timelords
If
any team took advantage of the first Festival of Fantasy week...
Then it was this one. Jumping from a 4-5 record to 7-5 in one weekend of footy is a huge effort, and this team is now beautifully placed in 3rd spot with a healthy percentage. A real dark horse.

Roppongian Rangers
If
we all had a chuckle at this club throwing $800k at Jack Steele despite being the only bidder...
Then no one's laughing now. Averaging a massive 120 points in a breakout season and still just 24, Steele should be a key plank of the Rangers squad for many years to come.

Creme de la Creme
If
Connoisseur has made an effort to share around Captain duties this season...
Then we might have seen the last of it now. Lachie Neale’s historic year continues, and with the Festival of Fantasy placing extra importance on every game, we should expect to see him to wear the C every week from here out.

Goodie's Giants FC
If
you wrote this team off after a 0-5 start to the season...
Then it’s time to get back on the wagon. Taranto back, youngsters stepping up in Day and Rowbottom, and very handy role players acquired in Curnow and May. Oh yeah, and they also added some bloke named Lachie Whitfield.

Jordan's Jets
If
this squad was designed to have enough depth to cover multiple injuries...
Then it has certainly needed it. Dunkley, Prestia, Naismith, Duncan, Shiel, Lycett, Hewett, Anderson all missing at different stages throughout the year, but this team still finds itself on top the ladder. A remarkable coaching performance and a true testament to the strong Jets culture. But the real challenge begins now.

Dagobah Immortals
If
he had to wait for his pre-draft fish & chips order...
Then Phil could be forgiven for getting an early start on Mad Monday preparations. Unfortunately the Immortals won’t be challenging this year, but have a strong foundation of youngsters moving forward.

The Darkness
If
this team received a tip to be Premiers in the SCSUL Season Preview...
Then 2020 has not gone to plan for The Darkness. Will be hoping for a big turnaround in 2021.

Jabukanji Stingers
If
you think this team got the short end of the stick on a few recent trades...
Then best check back in a couple of seasons. Very smart operator is Coach Ken, and always playing the long game.

Neptune Knights
If
this team has defied preseason expectations to sit in 5th place with finals just around the corner...
Then there’s no reason it can’t continue. Anything can happen during the Festival of Fantasy, and Knights fans should continue to dream.

TailsPower
If
you’re a coach taking over a team halfway through a season...
Then there are far worse positions to be in than 7-5 and equal 3rd on the ladder. But new management will be praying that big Maxy can overcome his niggles soon.

And one for the SCSUL Commission...
If
AFL Fixture boss Travis Auld is hit by a bus tomorrow...
Then Gil can rest easy knowing he has two ready made replacements in Tim and Ken. Have done a fantastic job navigating an extremely difficult and complex period for the League.
