ON THE BLOCK
  • No players at present
  • 3rd+ Round Draft picks
IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT
  • Parfitt, McGovern, Collins
  • 1st & 2nd Round Draft picks
OFF LIMITS
No players are off limits, provided the price is right. Though it would be hard pressed for the likes of Rucks, McCluggage, Simpkin, etc.

NEEDS
Willing to swap a 2+ year contract for a 1 year contract

STRATEGIES
Need to keep three one year contract players to meet the needs of the draft rules, unless I delist a rookie which is unlikely to occur.

OTHER
  • Need to stay competitive as a SCSUL league requirement
  • Will look at all offers. Players, draft picks or a combination.

DAGOBAH IMMORTALS

Still a work in progress:

ON THE BLOCK
Hamish Hartlett

IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT
Those not on the off limits list below.

OFF LIMITS
Def: Laird, Clark, Bowes, Lukosius, Ash, G-Barras, Reid
Mid: Cerra
Ruc: English
Fwd: Bailey, Georgiadis, U-Hagen, Naughton

NEEDS
- A ruckman!!
- Wanting an extra draft pick in the top 30 this year.
- An older midfielder (in starting 22 of their AFL club) who is still has a SCS Ultimate contract for at least next year or longer.

STRATEGIES
Currently at salary cap limit so any trade mid year will need to keep that in mind.

ON THE BLOCK
- Any of a range of established midfielders. I have c. 12 mids who are playing, and am happy to facilitate a deal with someone who can make better use of one or two of them. Guys like B Crouch, Hunter, Ross, Cotchin are all on 1-2 year deals, and could be handy for anyone wanting reinforcements.
- I’m in a somewhat similar position up forward, and could trade one or perhaps two. Those on shorter term deals are Ziebell, Breust, Gunston, Fritsch, Hoskin-Elliott, Newnes and N Jones.

IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT
- Clear #1 forward Jack Ziebell. Averaging alongside the likes of Gawn, Macrae and Grundy - but at less than half the price, and in the lowest scoring position on the ground. On a 1 year deal at $500k. Captain option.
- Travis Boak. #10 mid by average. One of the most durable players in the game - missed only 3 games in 6 years. Should average c. 110. 2 years @ $655k.

OFF LIMITS
- No-one is really off limits.
- With this said, I am trying to build a list for the future, so young players, or those on attractive/long term contracts, would be harder to do a deal for.
- Specific names with a higher “hurdle” (price) to a trade would include Drew, Short, Docherty, Sier, Collier-Dawkins, Phillips, Robertson, Hollands, De Koning, Gould and Byrne-Jones.
- One of these names could still be traded for a good price, and/or in a deal that furthers my strategy (eg possibly as part of a package deal).

NEEDS
- Few immediate needs, given players expected to return from injury. More focused on strategies at this point (see below).
- With this said, my main immediate interest would be for players at approximately D5 and D8.

STRATEGIES
- My list is not set up to contend this year, particularly with recent injuries, so my window and focus is longer-dated.
- I am most interested in players on 3+ year deals, who are either clear startable options, or a cheapish depth option with potential upside.
- Mids and forwards are of greatest interest, but I will happily look at defenders or rucks.
- Picks are of interest, although I already have 11 this year and 10 next year - so it’s more about quality than quantity now. I could potentially do pick swaps, rather than seeking picks outright.

OTHER
- Very happy to discuss trade ideas, and to try to accommodate another coach’s needs in a pragmatic way. Have recently done several trades that I believe/hope will be win wins.
- I have around $475k in cap space this year, giving significant flexibility to facilitate trades.
- Keen to get involved, and try to improve my list via trading. I’m not sure I’ve nailed our initial auctions/draft, so there is a bit on the “room for improvement” list, and I think trading is a big part of the fun!

ON THE TABLE
  • Oleg Markov (4yrs @ 321k, 87 avg)
  • Liam Baker (1 yr @ 409k, 81 avg)
  • Adam Saad (3 yrs @ 449k, 81 avg)
  • Jordan Butts (4yrs @ ave 262k, 65 avg)
  • Most picks, RD1's only for a great deal
NEEDS
  • In dire need of FWD's
  • Could also use another quality MID, but less pressing

STRATEGIES
  • Going for glory this year and next, won't completely sacrifice years beyond that but willing to take a hit

OTHER
  • Effectively zero cap space so will need to get creative with any trades

I did some analysis earlier this year - just going to put this here 🙂

Last year’s margins in the finals series:

334
35
41
209
425
...
and the Grand Final was won by just 22!

One good player could have made all the difference in 3 of the 6 games ... including the most important one.

Fyi I am out for most of today.

I don't think I will be involved in any last day trades, but if anyone does have a last minute suggestion involving my players PM me the trade idea as I check my phone from time to time.

After a busy trade season, The Darkness' list management team is putting a number of players on the block ("OTB"), and assessing interest in others.

The team is rumoured to be in a position to do some attractive deals, given a deep squad, strong hand of 2022 and 2023 picks, and ample 2022 salary cap space.

ON THE BLOCK / IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT (by position)

DEF

Michael Hurley - OTB
2 yrs @ 438k
Missed 2021 through illness/injury
Averaged 80 in 2019 and 2020
3 seasons 90+
Likely to trade at a discount given 2020 fitness issues
Potentially surplus to requirements given good defence depth

Kyron Hayden - OTB
3 years @ 198k
Cheap young DEF, 22 years old
Earned spot in side in 2020 before injury issues in 2021
Played two VFL games on return, before being selected in AFL side for R16 - late withdrawal with hamstring tightness
Possible best 22 player, secured on salary under 200k for 3 years
3 year contract with RFA rights to follow

MID

Hugh Greenwood - if price is right
#1 in AFL for tackles per game, ahead of Steele and Touk Miller
Averaged 100 this season pre R17
Ave 106 in 2020
Knee injury better than expected (MCL tear, 6 weeks in brace)
Expected to be fit for day one of preseason
3 year contract
Very cheap salary for output - comparable scorers commonly on 700k+, Greenwood on 469k
Unlikely to play in The Darkness' first flag, hence assessing interest

Quinton Narkle - OTB
23yo in aging Geelong midfield
Long contract at modest price, 5 years @ 402k
Has shown good ceiling, with scores of 134, 123, 115 and 111 from first 28 games
Ave 65 from 60% TOG this year, clear potential TOG upside
Significant CBAs (49% YTD) - 6th amongst Geelong mids behind Selwood and Danger (ie scope for further role improvement)

Tyler Brown - OTB
Very cheap salary on long term deal, 4 @ 196k
21yo mid in shallow Pies midfield
Out for season with shoulder injury
5th Pies mid for CBAs at 38% YTD behind Pendles and Crisp
Last 3 games before injury, CBAs: 86%, 79%, 65%

RUC
Jonathan Ceglar - if price is right

Recently reclaimed place in side
Significantly improved role, attending 62-83% of CBAs in games since recall, vs 22-38% in rounds 1-4
Cheap salary for playing RUC, 2 years @ 422k
Opportunity to secure ruck ahead of 2022 pre season
Only 3 playing rucks have been traded YTD - Flynn (11 games), A Phillips (6 games) and ROB (16 games, traded moments before the deadline)
Top 8 ruck by 5 round average

FWD

Tom Atkins - if price is right
Averaging 79 YTD
Recently returned to form, with 121 and 89 in last two games
Cheap contract, 3 years @ 401k
RFA rights thereafter
Possible DEF eligibility in 2021 - assessing interest given DEF depth

Will Hoskin-Elliott - OTB
Cheap salary, 2 @ 387k
Playing up the ground recently
Could be M-F next year
Averaging 78 last 11 rounds (ie since missing R4 for birth of child) ie F4 level
6 of last 8 games 80+

Luke Breust - OTB
2 @ 423k
Highly durable, only missed 7 games in 10 years
7 years of 80+ averages, ave 69 YTD
FWD rank by aggregate last 4 seasons: 34, 50, 22, 5
Only once missed >1 game in 10 years (jaw fracture, 4 games)

Billy Frampton - OTB
Cheap 2YC contract extension (ave 42)
Performing well in SANFL - ave 14 touches, 7 marks, 3 goals, 6 hitouts, 86 DT
Clear source of upside from straighter kicking! Kicked 2 goals, 11 behinds in AFL this season, vs 24 goals, 12 behinds in SANFL
Possible future RUC eligibility

NEEDS
- To free up list spots for 2022
- Aiming to add some quality to my list

OTHER
- Happy to help accommodate other coach's needs in terms of 2022 cap space, draft picks and the like.

Shoot me a PM if you see anything of interest, happy to discuss!

Roppongian Rangers

  • Z.Williams 26 yo (front ended salary so a decent deal on the back end of his salary - three more years on an approx 750k pa salary (avg 5 yr salary of 820k))
  • C.Blakely 25 yo
  • L.McDonald 26 y
  • D Moore 26 yo (411k salary, 1 year left)

IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT
  • T.Kelly
  • B.King (assuming he does not change clubs during the trade period)
  • S.Stack
  • J.Sweet
  • A.Smith
OFF LIMITS
  • Rucks (Nank and R.Marshall)
  • Heeney
  • T.Greene
  • J.Steele
  • Rowell
NEEDS
  • Startable forwards (75 avg +)
STRATEGIES
  • Looking to swap a few higher salaried players (ie Telly, ZWilliams, LMcDonald) for startable replacements on lower salaries (probably something everyone wants to do!)
OTHER
  • Shodoro established a solid trading relationship with SCSUL coaches in 2021, executing on 8 trades.

By way of update on the above, D Moore (COL) also on the block for the Rangers if anyone is interested. Open to draft picks or a player (in the mids or fwd).

With some time off over the Christmas break - and the Aussies dominating in the Ashes and cutting the Test short - my mind turned to my Ultimate League side.

I thought I might be a bit of fun to mix things up, by running an “auction” of sorts for some of my players. A few of us have a bit of extra time at the moment, and AFL lists/SC positions are settled, so it seemed like a good time for it 🙂

If it gets good interest, I’ll keep going with it, but if it doesn’t … I’ll either tinker with the setup, or let it be!

The way I suggest it will work is as follows:

  • I will list a “lot”, or item that I intend to open up for a trade. Often this will be a player, or it may involve picks, or perhaps some salary support (me paying some 2022 salary). Let’s assume it’s a player for now, for simplicity.
  • That player is someone I am open to trading. Under the auction setup, that player is likely to trade near term - so long as the bidding reaches a level I am happy to accept (essentially a reserve).
  • There will be a timeframe on the auction, likely around a week. The intention is that after that period, the player will be traded, and have a proud new owner!
  • The player doesn’t have to trade before the deadline, if there are some minor details to a deal still being worked out, but I would anticipate that whoever has placed the highest bid when the auction closes is the one I’m negotiating with (unless they withdraw, or can’t meet the reserve).
  • Bids can be submitted by PM, and can be anything you like. Draft picks will be the easiest to compare the value of, but feel free to offer a player, or some other combination (eg a player plus a pick, or a player plus salary support). I may give feedback on how appealing/otherwise a particular bid is.
  • I am generally happy to receive almost any form of consideration or value for a lot, but in general terms I am most interested in receiving things like: forwards, rucks, high draft picks in 2022, mid to high picks in 2023, and salary support from 2024 onwards. I am in a position to take on players with above market salaries in 2022, but obviously that does detract from their appeal or value as a bid.
  • I’ll give some highlights of each lot. This obviously won’t be fully comprehensive, so if you have any questions about a player or lot, please just ask.
  • I may need to tinker with the setup a little as we go, given that this is a bit of an experiment!

If you have any questions on how it will work, or suggestions for what you’d like to see, just let me know.

Hopefully it creates a bit of interest - good luck!
