Who is, as of 2023, the 'best' player in the AFL? Why? How long can they stay on top?

I am also suprised. I feel like there isn’t a stand-out #1 player. One could easily make solid arguments for a number of different players.

Gawn. Been played out of position to accommodate Grundy but I still think he's the most influential player in the comp. English is close.

Petracca isn't even the best player in his team, let alone the AFL.
Where is Oliver in the poll, he'd have to be close!?

In saying that, I've voted Bont as well, he just gets it done time and again.

I did a side-by-side stats compare of Bont and Petracca and it's honestly pretty close.

Of the key differences though, Petracca is marginally ahead in scoring power but Bont is way ahead defensively - 7.5 tackles and 1 spoil per game vs 4.1 and 0.3 for Petracca.

I think that's what makes him the best at the moment. He wins the ball, he wins a lot of it, he works defensively and he kicks goals, nearly one per game. What else do you want?

Bont is the most complete player we have at the moment. He does absolutely everything on the field and his defensive pressure for a midfielder is outstanding.

I'll admit I interpreted the question differently, I didn't realise it was 'current/recent best output.'
On that metric, then yes Petracca has been performing better than Oliver lately, but again, Bont still ahead imo.
