About 5 times today, we've seen guys standing up in the tackle, ball held to them, but they're still trying to run, to break the tackle. No attempt to get rid of it. That should negate prior opportunity. Free kick for holding the ball. If you don't pay the free 2 things happen. You're giving the guy with the ball 2 bites at the cherry. Or you're basically forcing the tackler to sling him, or drag him to ground heavily.
How about this?
Get rid of no prior opportunity. Every single tackle that causes a stoppage results in a free kick. Illegal tackles penalized, all others rewarded. Result? Players will dispose of the ball more, and more quickly. A lot less stoppages. Game more open and free flowing, which is what just about every rule change in the past 10 years has wanted to achieve!!!
I suggested this 2 or 3 years ago when everyone was concerned about the 30 blokes crowded around every stoppage. A free kick instantly spreads the crowd as players move up field to make position for the kick.

I understand the intention here, but then surely the net result is that nobody actually wants to win the stoppage? You're either immediately tackled and give up possession, or clearing the ball under heavy pressure, and likely giving up possession. The incentive is to be second to the ball. Can't imagine that'd go over well.

There would be a lot less stoppages. However in a contested ball situation players would either take the risk of possession or move the ball on quicker (punch tap kick) which makes the game faster and will in attacking situation cause more goals. Both of which the AFL has been manipulating the rules for years to try and achieve.

It is ironic that the AFL wishes to encourage players to take possession when in many instances this leads to a stoppage -which they have been trying to get rid of for years.
