Both are spindles, that fibre spinners use to create yarn from wool, alpaca, etc.
then they knit socks, jumpers, scarfs etc to wear.

Well kudos to you for making beautiful wooden objects
I know all about sanding as I am a Painter by trade, (as one of my trades) and know that it's mostly in the prep that counts.
