Looks like the preseason thread got closed, so not sure where to post this but this will do...

Kangas Intraclub Match

Watched the first half.

General - Clean conditions, clear "best 22" vs the rest scenario. Not sure if it's a good or awful sign but the best 22 really struggled to get ahead, they were behind fairly late into the 2nd quarter before a late burst got them ahead but given half the "rest" side weren't even AFL guys I'd lean more towards bad sign than good, maybe they've just got outstanding depth though! Was a shockingly competitive match, even included a double goal from a bit of a scuffle and some very decent tackling. Credit to North the commentary quality was actually great with various guests in to add some very useful tidbits.

O'Sullivan - Played a pure wing role from what I could tell. It didn't feel like he would have had a huge fantasy score but I will admit I wasn't watching like a hawk. He moved well, held width well and the the guest commentators all pretty much confirmed he'd play round one if he's fit for it. Premium price is really the only issue, wing role is more loop than start ideally but he's got the ability to score regardless. Definitely in the mix.

Sheezel - He was everywhere. Started mid, rotated through HF, still pushed to HB for some cheapies and just a class above. He's just really, really good at football.

Corr - Lined up in the pink (2nds) team, North would be hoping he stays there ideally (I rate him very lowly). Didn't do anything to really force his way out of it for mine.

Daniel - Primary rebound role as advertised. Lock him in if fit for round 1, has 100+ potential in that role. No Fisher there which meant absolute funneling to him but still going to happen. He took the bulk, if not all, of the kick-ins in the first half.

Wardlaw/Simpkin/Fisher/CCJ/Goater - These are the guys I'm fairly certain didn't play in at least the 1st half. Simpkin is playing in the indigenous team, not sure about Fisher, rest I believe injured.

Duursma - Started midfield for pink team, started like a house on fire, had a shoulder knock and I have to say I didn't notice him much after that, not sure if he went off, missing or I just didn't notice, I was watching blue team guys a lot closer to be fair.

Scott - Kicked a nice goal, otherwise same old for him, unquestionable work rate, very questionable skills/decision making. Like Corr, he'd be a guy I hope to not see play if I was a Kangas fan as it would mean the kids have pushed him out.

LDU - His horrible tackling stands out even more when it's his teammates. It's clear that he doesn't want to tackle as there's no reason for him to be so bad at it beyond that. Outside that, he looks in great nick, he played solidly and he even found a bit of outside ball which is always a flaw in his game. He felt like the clear #2 midfielder to Sheezel though, something he hasn't been for a while. That's a wrinkle that makes me hesitant to start him. If it wasn't for his bye, he'd probably be my first picked mid, fwiw, so that hesitance is definitely of note. It's an intraclub and I'm not going to take too much from it but I'd say he did nothing to move the scale in either direction.

McKercher - From what I've seen of the other write-ups I'm and the headline of the article that was above the video for the game I'm guessing he had a monster 2nd half as he was pretty incognito in the 1st. He's a stud and would be surprised if he's not a future star, I don't love his role though, seems to be the 3rd winger rotating through HF which can be a very difficult role to score well from. Had a couple of nice touches but fantasy wise I'd prefer he was where Daniels is! Given the bye, he's on the watchlist for me, was in a first draft but I don't know if that bye can be wasted on speculative keepers.

McDonald - Same old for him, defensive small defender.

Tucker - Playing HB, file him in the Scott/Corr category of the ideal result being him not playing very much. I still haven't actually worked out what he does at an AFL level yet.

Urquhart - Shame about the team he's ended up with because he looked fantastic as a bigger bodied midfielder. Will struggle to get games for North I dare say but he was the best midfielder for not insignificant parts of this game. Great size and looks to really enjoy smashing in, really liked the look of him, actually some Luke Parker vibes to him for mine albeit definitely with more toe. One to watch if he breaks in later in the season. Not sure if he can play any other role as played pure mid for pink team but he was a real standout for them.

Stephens - Played for pink team on the wing, actually played pretty well but not to the level of beating out those ahead right now.

Hardeman - Pink team at HB, did nothing to move the scale either way for mine.

Dawson x2 - I think they might have been playing but it was pink team if they were and I honestly didn't notice (or look) for either of them so I really can't add anything here

Logue - Was in defense for the blue team. He avoided mistakes which is basically the marker for him doing well.

Larkey - KPF for blue team, duh. He was alright, uncharacteristically bad kicking aside. Should benefit from Darling a bit.

Goad - He'll be one of my favourite backup rucks moving forward. Guys that size that move like he does are pretty rare. Xerri wore him down towards the end of the 2nd half but he definitely had his moments and held his own for the most part and looks a genuinely great prospect to me. He's only playing in the case of disaster but he was great. Real positive for Kangas fans, imo.

Payne - Did not notice him, not sure if not playing or on pink team.

Powell - In the first midfield group, had moments, went missing for long periods, basically standard Powell things. I still haven't worked out whether he's exceedingly average that has great moments or if he has the potential to be great but hasn't gotten there yet. He confuses me as much as any player in that regard. Annoyingly for my draft team plans he seemed to be clearly ahead of Parker for midfield burn, which with Wardlaw and Simpkin also to bob up isn't ideal.

Curtis - Played a really solid game up forward. So much talent but his consistency is going to remain the question until he answers it. I rate him, so hopefully can take another step this year.

Parker - Forward with midfield stints rather than the other way around which isn't ideal for fantasy and with the couple of outs that will impact him negatively in that regard. Definitely keen for the bigger preseason games but this was a solid X against his name for mine. Really needs to average 90+ and he never really did that when in this role at Sydney and the Swans are stronger than the Kangas project to be. Watchlist still but if I had to lock in a team now, he'd be outside looking in. Much better draft pick for now.

Bergman - Defense in the pink team, played well in his moments.

Darling - Was genuinely good for the blue team. Not fantasy relevant but if he can play at that level this year he'll definitely help them as a team.

Phillips - The other guy getting midfield burn alongside Parker, Powell, LDU and Sheezel. He played alright but you'd kind of like to see more than that for the guy on the fringe of the 22 playing against the VFL guys. Has just never recovered from the glandular fever and didn't show any signs that's changed in this game. Really hope he can find a way to get back because he's getting really close to the bust territory now and he was such an exceptional young talent.

Comben - Playing KPD, played well, should probably look to give to Daniel more and kick less though!

Pink - KPD for the pink team, he was solid.

George - Another I didn't notice but also wasn't looking for him. No idea if he played.

Archer - Blue team at HB, probably holding the spot for Fisher (It's him or Tucker, imo) but he had a really solid game. Defensively sound and more involved offensive than usual, played within himself and didn't force things, definitely looked for Daniel as well which is what he should be doing.

Whitlock - The man they paid what is likely to be a king's ransom for but I have to say that he actually looked really good. Playing as the 3rd tall type for the blue team he was very solid in the air and better at ground level, moves very well. He's got a couple of massive preseasons in the gym ahead of him but he's got that wiry size and the agility to find a matchup and I expect he plays plenty, he's the main reason you hope not to see Corr (Logue also was less impressive than Whitlock, imo). Now admittedly he's playing the VFL forwards none of whom really scream AFL quality either, but he was really good. Will watch very closely in their preseason games but as a 113k D/F he has immense value to team structures with the new DPP flexibility if he's playing. The way he plays also has at least loophole level scoring potential if not outright starter. He's the biggest takeaway from the game for me, that D/F link had looked impossible but he might make the dream possible and he'd be outright pickable without that based on this game. Should see plenty of it and I expect teams will avoid Combem so he has a chance to essentially be their main intercept player. Big tick.

Stevens - Playing for the pink side, couple of nice plays, not a lot of it though.

Harvey - Pink team small forward, had a wonderful 30 seconds that included 2 goals, a bit of niggle and some decent pressure. He played solidly.

Xerri - He was excellent. Basically the opposite of Bryan write-up above where when you face the VFL guy I want to know it and you could tell here. Tapwork was the standout, which is probably his weakest area so that's even better to see. Connection with Sheezel in particular was brilliant. Still following up at ground level and still intercepting and being a pack option around the ground. I hate his bye but every time I watch him, he gets closer to me just dealing with it, another with a big tick.

Maley - KPF for the pink team, he was actually really solid. They mentioned how bad his kicking is and he delivered on that front but he's great in the air and solid at ground level in the contest. Got some Levi about him albeit without the hulking size that enabled him to play ruck.

Ford - Played for the pink team, HF mostly, and was very good. He's fringe best 22 and a good player, there's something not quite there still but he's got potential.

Konstanty - Played small forward for blue team, they mentioned only been in training for about 10 days so that's a sign of where he's rated. His pressure work was a standout. Was very highly rated at Sydney but just never quite broke through. I think he should get chances. Cheap forward, would be a pure bench play, imo, but should be a solid chance at locking a best 22 spot in, imo. He's exactly what they've been missing up forward. Another with a big tick.

Teakle - KPF for pink team, I believe, albeit might have been someone else I mistook for him. Didn't do enough for me to confirm it was him obviosuly

Zurhaar - 3rd forward for blue and was really good, Darling will help him a lot I think. Still mostly deep as a forward but dangerous. I don't think fantasy relevant.

Hansen Jr - I think Konstanty was better in the role and I'd be genuinely surprised if one of them isn't out for Simpkin. Konstanty has the better fantasy profile and price, so not a bad result if it went that way. He played solidly though and did a few nice things, I think they need the pressure of Konstanty more but will be interesting to see where they go, he's a good little player though and right in the mix. Too expensive for his role/scoring profile, imo, but if he's the only rookie there he might be worth taking. I think forward rookies look deep though so doubt he's needed.

Freo vs All Stars

Watched 3 quarters.

General - Pretty good contest, hot but perfect conditions. All stars in particular really cracking in and making a game of it. This one actually has some scores to reference back to, so will be doing that for extra insight. Obviously watching only the 3 quarters some guys may have junked to a discrepancy from what I saw, probably some I just missed, always hard when not watching for tackles distinctly to be accurate.

Freo - Obviously the relevant team here but some serious concerns would have to be raised after how the finished last year and then to throw this up against a team that has no ruck, no KPF, no structure, no history, no genuine star midfielders and basically came together this week for a few training sessions, obviously talented but you'd hope as a team with top 4 ambitions to beat them soundly still. Not even missing that many players. Totally out hustled in the 3 quarters I watched. Obviously it's a meaningless preseason game but you generally want that first hit out to be a bit better than this.

Missing - Ryan, Bolton, Darcy and Young that are genuine best 22 and then Aish, Fyfe, Walters and Banfield that are all fringe guys at this point.

Sturt - Played forward, same old from him.

O'Meara - Played wing predominantly and had very little impact. Would think he's one of the guys they hope gets pushed out from those missing.

Serong - The only Docker who really stood out to me as having a good game, TOG seemed to drop in Q3 to my eyes. He was clean and skillful, which stands out in a side that was startingly lacking both those things. Tags remain the concern for him as he struggled badly last year under them but otherwise he's a stud and is hard to look past with the great bye.

Chapman - Defensively oriented HB role. Was solid enough.

Clark - Offensively oriented HB role, he was solid and ticked the boxes. Nothing special but absolutely nothing to raise any concerns either. Happy with what I saw as someone looking long and hard at him!

Brayshaw - Very preseasony game from him, he lacks skill at the best of times but he also didn't really work very hard in this one which leads to a pretty poor fantasy outcome. Not a guy I question the work rate of at all though so will definitely put it down to the preseason friendly factor. Role good and looks fine physically. He's on the radar because he's got upside potential at his price compared to some of the other mids but Serong showed once again who the much better player is of the pair for mine and I always find that a hard difference to not back in SC.

Jackson - Predominantly forward where he contributed very little playing against fringe AFL players with no support structure around them. He absolutely dominated in the ruck which means nothing given the AS didn't have a #1 ruck, nevermind a #2. He also played some minutes as a genuine midfielder which don't add a lot more value than him as a forward. He's by far and away at his best as a ruck and their hatred of using him there continues to baffle me given what they're paying him. You have a guy who is a 9/10 as a ruck that you're paying as a 14 out of 10 and then playing roles that he's a 3/10, it's weird, especially when Darcy is confirmed out for the first ~month of the season. AFL coaches going to do AFL coaching things though.

Davies - Didn't come on until the 3rd, clearly outside best 22, imo.

Sharp - Had a solid game on the wing.

Reid - Played a bit from I think Q2 onward, might even have been earlier, didn't do much in the time I was watching.

Brodie - Came on late in Q3 I believe, straight on ball. I can't see how he gets minutes over Serong, Brayshaw and Young and seems well behind a couple of others also.

Reidy - I actually quite like him as a player but there's no way I'd play him ahead of or alongside Jackson in the ruck, again, just weird. He dominated Livingstone as you'd expect him to but that doesn't really mean much, if anything he actually had a poor game given he was against a guy who to this point is a forward who can ruck a bit at WAFL level and is very underdeveloped (he actually looks a good sort but not yet), you need to do more with that kind of mismatch, again I like him as a prospect though.

Worner - Playing in defense, was solid enough albeit seems behind Wagner to me for what I'd guess is a single spot in the side.

Amiss - Needs to do a lot more. Similar to Reidy, when you're playing VFL guys in a side with no advanced defensive structures or support, you really should be showing out. I like him but his lack of development so far is a bit of a concern and he really needs to start to have more consistent impact across games.

Erasmus - No real impact, he definitely had more ball than I thought looking at the stats but didn't have a big impact. Still it's good to see the stats, the role was solid and at his price, he's a must watch if he's there round 1. I like him also as a player just didn't show out like I'd hope in this scenario.

Simpson - Playing forward, he's another I quite like as a player but that role is not good and he's not a natural forward so it's going to be even harder, if he's there round 1 he's interesting at his price. I think he goes out for Bolton quick like though from the forward group.

O'Driscoll - The only Docker who seemed to treat this as a genuine chance to force his way into the round 1 side or cement it if already there. Gut running and workrate stood out given he was about the only guy doing it. Awkward price but he can play and definitely moved up the watch list for mine. Role seemed to be a weird kind of wing/HB hybrid. Will be watching very closely from here as he's got proven scoring ability.

Walker - Lock down defensive role as usual.

Frederick - That awkward HF role he plays that seems to isolate him out of the game more than anything else. Worked hard in it but not fantasy relevant, imo.

Wagner - Solid game as a small defender. Nothing special but no glaring mistakes. Was a tough job as a small defender given the quality of opposition and the supply from the midfield and forward line issues.

Treacy - Dropped a lot of easy marks, had a couple of nice moments. He took a huge jump last year, the question is can he do it again and become a genuine star. The way he plays isn't exactly suited to preseason so will wait and see. Not fantasy relevant, imo, but he could be if he can genuinely improve further.

Cox - Played the first half only I believe. Was ok but didn't really have a matchup so it was actually hard for him.

Draper - Similar to Cox, was a bit exposed at ground level whenever the ball wasn't marked, hard matchup when the other team doesn't have any forwards that are your size/agility profile and are bringing it in with genuine speed.

Switkoswki - Concussed, I believe, in Q1, issue given his history.

Johnson - Lapped up the Young minutes in midfield. He was ok but like so many others, this was a golden chance and he didn't really seem that interested in taking it. Not fantasy relevant, imo.

All Stars - They were fun to watch, forward line was pure chaos at ground level, rebound off half back was brilliant, their Frankenstein monster of a midfield was competitive, heck even on top at times. They clearly wanted it a hell of a lot more than Freo and despite no real structures or game plan, they smashed Freo around the contest and won anyway. Only going to bother with guys I think are fantasy relevant as obviously not a lot of point on the others.

Simpkin - Looked in ripping nick and had a really solid game playing mostly HF with some midfield mix thrown in, basically his club role.

JHF - Same as Simpkin, HF/Mid mix and was really good. Looks very fit. Strong fantasy option as we already knew.

Humphries - Was really solid at HB, just one of those guys who always has time even when he doesn't and uses it very well. Not for me this year but I can see the appeal.

Burgoyne - Also off HB and very solid. Will be interesting to see his role with Port, only really relevant if he's playing HB in Houston's spot but will watch for it.

Amon - Played wing for the AS, was solid but nothing special.

Pickett - Playing forward with midfield bursts, basically club role. Looks very fit though and was dynamic.

NWM - I see DFS is saying injured, I didn't notice it if he was, but he was sensational when playing and just so classy. Love watching him play, going to be hard to not start him for me, definitely could hit 105+ this year.

Rankine - Looked fit and was good. Didn't bother with any cheap fantasy points though which is always an issue of his and something that does restrict him a bit, would love to see him add that, especially because he can turn those cheap touches deadly very quickly with his skill and evasiveness.

Bolton - Felt like he barely played, his TOG actually higher than I expected at 30%, did not look in great shape or particularly fit to me which given calf issues isn't a shock. Had a couple of nice touches and could yet have a massive season but I'd need to see a lot more in the next games with Freo. Just feels like there's better and safer options than him right now.

First quarter done in the West Coast vs Richmond game. Richmond lead by a point at quarter time. - Elijah Hewett started on ball
also kicked the first goal of the game. - Kaleb Smith looked solid down back for the tigers - Liam Duggan playing around the ball to start the game. - Bo Allan started at half back for the Eagles. Looks composed with the footy. - Tom Simms more than held his own against Matt Flynn. - Blight looked good in the air, but butchered a few kicks. - Archer Reid’s second efforts when rucking were actually pretty good. - Liam Baker did start half back. Didn’t get too much of the ball though. Was the outlet at each contest between the arcs. - Sam Lalor kicked the first goal for the tigers. Split his time between midfield and forward. - Richmond played a very slow brand of footy, whereas the Eagles were all about the slingshot offense. - Dewar nearly took a Sampi like mark but couldn’t quite hold on.
