#AFLFantasy Match Sim Notes 21st February - Sydney vs GWS
Sydney - Main midfield 3 for Sydney were Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner and James Rowbottom. - Errol Gulden ($1.11m MID) scored 107 points and was everywhere. Looks sets for another big year. The early bye means it is difficult to start him. - Matt Roberts ($780k DEF) just ticked the legs over and scored 53 points playing off half back. One to watch next week and in Opening Round. - Ben Paton ($458k DEF/FWD) could be a smoky pick in the FWD line if he plays. Scored 51 and looked comfortable off half back. Question is if he is in the team in Opening Round. One to monitor. - Callum Mills ($759k DEF) didn’t play due to managing mild plantar fasciitis. Bit of a flag and something to watch. Would ease a lot of concerns if he plays next week but we get a look in Opening Round anyway. GWS - Main midfield 3 for GWS were Josh Kelly, Toby Bedford and Finn Callaghan. - Kieran Briggs ($938k RUC) was good in a tough battle with Grundy and Ladhams. Didn’t play in the 4th quarter and scored 63 points. - Cody Angove ($271k MID/FWD) could be someone we could look at. Scored 67 and looked good, particularly early. If he plays Opening Round, his score will dictate if we pick him or not. - Conor Stone ($230k FWD) looked pretty good playing off half back and scored 56 points. Looks like a good FWD rookie for us if he plays Opening Round. - James Leake ($230k DEF) didn’t play the first 3 quarters, but came on in the 4th and looked pretty good scoring 20 points. You just wonder though if he will be there in Opening Round after not starting the game. **Shoutout to

Carlton
Watched the Carlton/Saints match sim. Will try to keep it to fantasy relevant players but will probably talk about most Carlton players as can't help myself :ROFLMAO:. First half especially was closer to full strength teams, but Q3 and especially Q4 weaker sides as expected.

Carlton:

Cerra - Looked good, full time mid. May be tempting a little, with Walsh being the main player missing today. He's definitely underpriced with the 3 games he played as a defender last year (74/56/38SC) but underpriced enough? Probably not.

Jagga Smith - Role very disappointing, thought it would be him or Lord as the 4th mid without Walsh today, but it was Doc. Basically played the E Hollands role, which he's probably less suited to than E Hollands as well. Had a big collision first half, then a corked leg injury of some sort Q3. E Hollands came on in the 4th. I personally think he may need an injury to Cripps/Hewett/Cerra to get a better role. Classy enough when he did get the ball.

Doc - 4th mid today, was fine. I wonder if he moves to the wing (Binns out of the 22/sub) if Walsh is back, or where he plays...

Lord - Came on in the 3rd (for Cripps effectively) and was fine. Too many mids really to consider him. Wouldn't surprise me if he's sub in early rounds as Voss likes mids as subs (I'd be making wings or small forwards sub personally!)

Cripps/Hewett - As expected

TDK - Split the ruck with Pitt. Big red flag for mine. Actually looked really good though I thought. I can't imagine Pitt misses Round 1 (no Curnow) and Curnow should be out Round 2 as well at a guess. Quite possible that TDK could lone ruck Round 3 onwards, but until Pitt has a LTI, I'm not really keen.

Pitt - I am a Pitt fan in general and thought he looked good today. Ironically he was better around the ground than he usually is, but Boyd probably got the better of him in the ruck.

Binns - Played the game on the wing. Needs to fix up some scrubber kicks but I thought he was fine. Awkward price at $171000 but definitely could be in the Round 1 team. Would like to see Walsh in the Round 1 team, as I feel Doc could take the wing spot back if Walsh is in the mids, so at least would know where Binns stands.

Acres - As expected on one wing.

Cottrell - 3rd winger (aka forward except for spells for Binns/Acres)

L Camporeale - Came on some time in Q3 as a winger. Was solid enough but definitely not in best 23 for now.

Weiters - Usual.

L Young - Played 2nd tall, allowing Haynes to be 3rd tall. Was ok.

Haynes - Looked great. Unfortunately will be pretty key to Carlton's season I would say (unfortunate as he is older and a little injury prone) - even had some type of cramp (hopefully just cramp) in the 4th. Otherwise was intercepting quite well, ball use just ok. I don't think a serious SC pick due to age/injury history anyway.

Gov - Effectively interceptor (although Haynes intercepted plenty too)

Saad - Usual but a corked thigh I'd say first half. Was still out there 2nd half.

O Hollands - Great role, dare I say a Nic Newman role. Was happy to see some intercepts as he can't rely on his ball use (which was fine today when going for safer kicks) for his scoring. I'm very tempted now, just means have to eat a mid spot for first 6 rounds until he gets DPP etc. No Boyd today but I wouldn't say affects much (aka Boyd can take his 2024 role and Hollands takes Newman's role)

Cowan - Was ok, expect he's in the best 22 but could come down to 2 of Cowan/Boyd/Carroll/JSOS.

Matt Carroll - Probably the biggest Carlton takeaway of the day as a $99100 defender. Looked raw at times but better at others. Ball use was a bit iffy, just slight over or under kicks at times. Very hard to tell if he's a serious Round 1 chance without Boyd and to a lesser extent JSOS. Monitor of course.

JSOS - DNP today (training defence this off-season) - He's probably more competing with Lewis Young (Haynes moves to 2nd tall) rather than a Cowan/Matt Carroll/Boyd type.

McKay - Looked very good. I'm not considering for SC but still good signs. Struggled when in the ruck though (you'd think with Pitt/TDK both playing he wouldn't be getting centre bounces but managed at least 2, that both went for Saints centre clearances/goals I believe)

E Hollands - Q4 only, was a bit rusty early on. Actually not sure what this means that he didn't play early, can't remember if he had any off-season injuries. He is much more suited to the HFF role than Jagga but I assume they wanted to get Jagga some match practice at the minimum.

Motlop - Should take a step up this year. Is cheaper than I thought which isn't ideal as I wouldn't consider a small forward. Luckily not quite cheap enough I don't think.

Moir - Also tempting at that price, but no Curnow for Rounds 1, maybe 2. Expect will play a lot more games this year, just depends what they want to do with the dual ruck setup. Also no Kemp today.

Zac Williams / Fogarty / Fantasia - Small forwards, were fine.

Saints:

Steele - Very good. Does he average more without Sinclair in the team? Might have to look into that haha.

Macrae - Very good. Effectively a 2023 / early 2024 role where he gets CBA's and still racks it up everywhere else. Not stuck at half forward or the wing. I don't like to throw the lock word around but he's one of my few locks at this stage.

Boxshall - He looked great... Saints mids have a lot of injuries so would have to see how far away Clark etc are, but no Crouch/Ross, no Dow/Phillipou for a while, there's going to be midfield minutes to go around.

Garcia - I noticed Boxshall a lot more but he was good too and the above applies. Awkward price too.

NWM - Racked it up, looked good. He may be more of the benefactor of no Sinclair than Steele, so hard to tell.

H Boyd - Looked great. Wouldn't say a big standout but held his own (or won?) the battle against Pitt. Obviously no Marshall today makes it hard, but guessing he'd be locked at R3 at the minimum, even if wasn't there Round 1.

Hastie - Very solid on the wing. But with Wood back, would probably be pushed out of the 23 (someone like Darcy Wilson 3rd winger rather than Hastie who needs to be pure wing)

Travaglia - On in Q4 on the wing. Was quiet first 10 mins but pretty solid the next 20. Definitely seems behind Hastie, and no Wood today.

Keeler - On in Q4 defence, looked fine.

EDIT:
Forgot Hall who was solid as a forward and O'Connell too. Too busy thinking about my Carlton players
