What was crowd size on Collingwood Twilight Sunday match at G ?
Just curious how the Sunday late crowds go.

I'm real hoping AFL trial two Friday night games and stop buggering around with timeslots outside normal weekend friendly timeslots.

Not a fan of Sunday Twilight, at all. Also, please put at least one game on at the traditional time of 2pm on a Saturday arvo. Could get used to a semi-permanent Thursday night match though.

As a Carlton fan, must say not overly keen on Thursday night games either but out of the evils of Sunday Night, Monday Night and Thursday night it is preferable.

2nd Friday night game... ANYONE ?????

Watching Footy Classified last night, they said it was ~32,000.

It was brought up because of the pathetic turnout for Nick Maxwell's lap of honour.

Collingwood knew the turnout would be horrible given the timeslot so there were free tickets on offer somehow.

I notice that no one ever talks about having a morning game. Like say at 10am or 11am. Not that it would ever happen considering there is so much local sport and religious services in the mornings. I used to love getting to the ground at 11am to watch the reserves before the main game.

Phil, I'm sure Perth has occassionally had games start around or before midday.
I remember a Saturday game on tv live at 2-30 pm which would have been 12-30 there plus the 1-10 pm Sunday times in Melbourne might have been 12-40 in Adelaide or 11-10 am if from Perth.

8 pm Friday night game in Perth would be awesome to add as semi-regular imho. That would be 10 pm in Melbourne after the first Friday night game could finish up.

Bring back the ressies. That would be great. (Of course, I know it will never happen.)

Essendon champ retires. One of my favourites, very smart actual footballer. Awful luck with injuries, his body didn't let him get to the level he should have. Wish he'd go on for another year. Has been great down back for us this year.

Winderlich announces retirement
August 6, 2014 12:06 PM
After calling Essendon Football Club home for more than a decade, Jason Winderlich has decided season 2014 will be his last in the red sash.
The country lad from Gippsland walked into Windy Hill in 2002 and leaves the True Value Solar Centre a respected, talented and extremely loyal teammate.
The 29 year-old announced to the players and coaches he will retire at seasons end.
“I’ve enjoyed every single minute during my time here at Essendon,” Winderlich said.
“To be drafted to the club you supported as a kid was a dream come true. I would have been honoured to play the one game, so to pull on the jumper for twelve years has been an absolute privilege.”
“I’m certainly going to miss the banter around the club and playing alongside a great group of blokes, but I’ve got a young family and I have to think about my long term future and I think it’s fair to say the body probably didn’t have another full pre-season in it.”
Jason was drafted from Gippsland U18, pick number 11 overall, at the 2002 National Draft. He made his debut the following season against Richmond in Round 7.
His lightning pace, defensive pressure and accurate kick for goal saw him carve out a successful career in the Bombers forward line. In his 123 games to date Jason has kicked 78 goals. Over the course of his career ‘Licka’ averages 15 disposals, 5 marks and 3 tackles per game.
Senior coach Mark Thompson led a chorus of praise for the veteran Bomber who has been a regular member of the club’s senior leadership group.
“For ‘Licka’ to carve out a career he did, with all the challenges he faced, really is an incredible achievement,” Thompson said.
“There’s always a sense of excitement whenever Licka has the ball in his hands. He’s a smart player and his blistering speed allowed him to change the momentum of a game.”
“Over the later part of his career he’s been a great leader and mentor for the younger players and he will be missed, there’s no doubt about that.”
Winderlich’s story is one of resilience and determination. A career plagued by serious injuries, ‘Licka’s’ ability to play more than 120 games for Essendon is a remarkable achievement.
“I’ve been through some tough times but those challenges made me the player I am.”
“There was obviously times when I thought my career was going to be cut short but the support of my teammates and people around the club like Doc Reid gave me the focus and encouragement to keep going.”
“This club not only helped me become a better player but over the journey I’ve made some great mates and its opened up a number of doors that will help me after footy.”
Club doctor Bruce Reid argues he’s spent more time with ‘Licka’ than his own children.
“He’s like one of my kids,” Reid said.
“You always develop a really strong bond with the players who spend time in rehab and he’s certainly spent his fair share of time in the rehab group.”
“Licka is a remarkably strong person, he overcame so many obstacles, he had back complications, knee reconstruction and multiple hamstrings and to play over a hundred games, I think, is a great testament to his resilience and determination.”
Jason has prepared himself well for the next phase of his life and is looking forward to devoting himself full time to his recycle timber business.

Surprise to me that Winderlich has retired, been playing some great footy off the half back line in recent weeks, thought he might have gone around for one more year.

But, but, but, but........ Jon Ralph told us only a month ago he would play on next year.....

Sad to see him retire but I understand it. His body is stuffed and he probably knows he would struggle to get through another season. I know this gets said a lot but constant injuries have robbed us of seeing a really good player.

My foremost memory of Licka was a reserves game at Windy Hill he played many years ago after returning from one of his injuries. Played on the wing, had 30+ possies and 5 goals and lead the boys really well. At 1/4 time and 3/4 at the huddle (Supporters were able to go on the field and listen to the coaches) he actually had to lie on the ground while the trainers worked on massaging his legs and back. Anyway after that game I knew he was a quality player.

Hahaha. Enjoy New Zealand.

I was just re-categorising the titles to resembles the path taken by the AFL football players. The previous categorisation of titles was more aligned to the corporate ladder.

I really miss the reserves before the game.
Did the Under 19's used to play before the reserves ?
I can't remember but it certainly did on Grand Final day.
I wonder whom the last AFL footballer was that represented his club coming up through the ranks of under 19's then reserves and finally seniors.
Maybe someone of Kouta era.

Senior Executive to Michael Tuck would seem like a demotion, but not in my opinion! :D

Yes Under 19 before the reserves.
Last player to go through the ranks?
TAC Cup started in 1992, so think from a Geelong veiw point it may have been Peter Riccardi.

As a result of later season start date, 2015 AFL Grand Final will be played on Saturday October 3, with 1 bye for all clubs during season.

AFL has told club CEOs that any Good Friday match 'most unlikely' in 2015, but may be considered in future seasons from 2016 onwards.

Interesting...further to that

Easter start confirmed for 2015 season

NEXT year's AFL Grand Final will be staged in October, with the 2015 season kicking off across the Easter long weekend.

At a meeting with the clubs' CEOs on Thursday, the AFL confirmed the Grand Final will be played on Saturday, October 3.

The first match next season will be played on Thursday, April 2 – the day before Good Friday.

It is "most unlikely" any football will be played on Good Friday next season, however an AFL spokesman confirmed Good Friday football "may be considered" from 2016 onwards.

The later than usual start to the season is due to the 2015 Cricket World Cup being staged in Australia and New Zealand this summer.

The World Cup final will be played at the MCG and the AFL has delayed its season until all grounds are available.

There will only be one bye during the home and away season.

The AFL also confirmed the majority of matches in next year's pre-season NAB Challenge will be played at regional and suburban grounds, to take the game to regions that don't usually host matches.

I just saw a tweet saying that Round 1 next year would start on Thurs 2 April (Easter Weekend) and be played over ONE weekend.

A later start to the fantasy season, but keeping the round to one week rather than two sounds like a positive thing to me.

Edit: Beaten to it :(
