Wouldn't call gaff's act football related at all. Malicious intent, doesn't matter where he was aiming, 7 weeks+ but likely to be 6-7 weeks.

What football related purpose did he aim to achieve with that punch?

Of course it's football related. If he wanted to break his jaw he could have done it with a golf club the other day.

Maybe he lost at golf the other day and decided last weekend during the match was his chance?

Impulse action. These are young blokes full on everything a male body can produce for 2 hours and more with pre match etc.
All of us have done something stupid in a blink. Gaff is cut to bits of what he has done. He has no defence, and he will admit that..

If the umpires had been doing their job properly and payed free kicks to players held and scragged way off the ball... then incidents like this would not occur.

It happens in every game to all the superstars of this league and it is a real problem. The AFL say they want to get more free flowing footy and a better spectacle and are talking about all these potential rule changes... Well the answer is right in front of them, Make sure they have competent umpires who stop the niggle, scragging and holding. The players will soon stop the holding if they are constantly giving away free kicks and we would have cracking 1 on 1 battles like the Dangerfield v Fyfe battle of a couple of years ago.

The stars are the ones who make this game great to watch. Not the dirty grubs holding the stars behind play.
Well said LITS.
Often I see 2 opponents chasing a ball that goes out of bounds and the player behind gives his opponent a shove in the back after they cross the line. I don't understand why that's not a free kick? What sort of an example is it showing to the young ones?

Hall actually got 10 wks.
Under the system at the time he missed 7.

This falls in the 6 to 8 range for mine.

Whether Gaff gets gets 4 weeks or 6 or 8 or 10 (i reckon he deserves 8, and yes i'ma n eagles supporter and yes that rule shim out of all finals), what I am failing to wrap my head around is:

Seriously assault a player on field, break his face, shatter 4 teeth and put him in hospital, deliberate or not, we talk in weeks.

But god forbid you rub sandpaper on a ball, and you, and your captain, and your vice captain are out for 12 months!

Scratching my head.

very true , especially as other players (including captains) have been suspended for 1 match for ball tampering.

More to it than just 1 test , don't think CA and players are telling us the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

Interesting that Smith and Warner are banned from playing in Australia but are allowed to play overseas in T20 tournaments.

Find the whole situation quite bizarre

I seem to recall a certain AFL team getting season long bans for cheating in the not too distant past...

Don't bother to categorize players as "thug" or "clean" because it is irrelevant. We shouldn't consider how "good" someone's record has been in the past and factor in some kind of "discount", there should just be heavier weighting for repeat offenders.

He chose to strike, got him high and caused serious damage. No matter how much scragging there was in the lead up, where he meant to hit him, or how friendly they are off the field, if you have a brain fade and break someone's jaw you deserve to sit on the sidelines for 8+.

If a tagger can get under your skin to the point where you punch him in the face, he's done his job. The great players can work through it on the field.

Look at Greenwood / Dusty a couple of weeks ago as a contrast. Greenwood was getting under his skin so Dimma sent him forward and he kicked the next two goals...

It's 7-10 weeks depending on what example they are trying to set

Gaff is certainly an interesting case and i can't quite decide where i sit. i'm old fashioned, harder the better BUT not when it comes to cheap shots. you hit someone in self defence or because they hit you. and when it's over it's over. coward punchers deserve serious sentences. is this any different to that? brayshaw wasn't prepared, didn't expect it. but because it's in a game of professional sport is it different? was he provoked?

so many questions and i'm sure the answer won't make anything clearer.

as for Gaff's police escort, come on now. just adds to the confusion! special treatment for a dog act?!

From this week's AFL "in the mix" might get DeGoey, Howe, Taranto, Gowers back this week, and maybe Seedsman and Sicily will see a return in the H&A, yay. But from a SC perspective Gaff's still a loss.

Wayne Campbell interviewed on Sen1116 this evening said that Taranto and Shiel would return to the side.

Extract from afl website on Sicily.

Sicily is the interesting one.

"Scaphoid injuries can be challenging because you never quite know how they’re healing, but his function is good, he’s back training and it’s all looking good at this stage," Russell said.

"We’ll need to rescan in the next few weeks and decide when we’ll see him out there again this year."
