Thank god for that. Season seriously dragged towards the end. Interested to see what this revamped finals system is like. Hopefully they keep the top 4 and don’t allow any more teams into the finals. Maybe a 1v2 qualifying final (to give some reward for finishing at the top) and a 3v4 elimination final with the winner of that facing the loser of the qualifying final for a place in the grand final.
Totally agree about the top 1 or 2 teams getting the double chance ... in a final 4 setup ...

- 1 v 2 qualifying
- 3 v 4 elimination
- loser 1 v 2 plays winner of 3 v 4

*Edit: wasted post as @Lynchmond covered what I said

Cricket Australia overhaul Big Bash season for 2019/20
The Big Bash is in for its biggest changes since its launch with a shorter season and a new finals system planned for 2019/20.
Rebecca Williams, Herald Sun

The Big Bash League will unveil a radical new five-team finals series this summer that aims to provide a greater reward for the top two teams.
The new five-game finals format will be played across almost two weeks after a shortened home-and-away season and will give the teams that finish first and second a double chance and the winner of their qualifier battle a week to prepare for the final.
In other highlights of the 2019-2020 BBL fixture, announced on Thursday:
*Victorian fans will have to wait until January 4 for a rematch of last year’s final between the Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades at the MCG.
*Melbourne Renegades will open their season against the Sydney Thunder at GMHBA Stadium on December 19.

*Melbourne Stars kick-off their season on the road against the Brisbane Heat at Metricon Stadium on December 20. The Stars’ first home game is against the Hobart Hurricanes on December 22 at a venue TBC.
*Brisbane Heat and Sydney Thunder open the season on December 17 at the Gabba.
*The Renegades will host the final game of the regular season against the Heat at Marvel Stadium on January 27, concluding a bonanza of cricket featuring seven games across three days of the Australia Day long weekend.
*There will be no games on Christmas Day, but the Hurricanes will host the Renegades in the afternoon on Christmas Eve at Blundstone Arena.
*The regular season will be condensed by 13 days this summer.
In the new finals format, fourth and fifth will kick off the series in the eliminator on January 30, followed by the qualifier between first and second on January 31 from which the winner heads straight to the final.
The third-placed team will play the winner of the eliminator in the knockout final, while the loser of the qualifier between first and second will battle the winner of the knockout in the challenger final for a place in the decider.

Head of Big Bash Leagues Alistair Dobson said the league had wanted to give the teams that finished on top after the regular season more reward.
“The number one element is to make it the best chance for the teams finishing first and second to make it through,’’ Dobson said.
“It’s an amazing quirk of history that the team finishing first at the end of the season has only won it once and the team finishing third or fourth has won it more often, so we want to reward teams finishing first and second as well as we can.
“There is an element though of making the game more accessible for more fans to be part of the finals and this model also gives us the chance for the team hosting the final to have more preparation going in.”
Dobson defended the decision to have more teams playing in the finals than not.
“It’s actually harder for fifth to win it this year than it was for fourth to win it in the previous season,” Dobson said.
“So you have to win four finals to win it from fifth and if a team go on a run like that at the end of the season then they probably deserve to win it.
“But also another team being a part of it keeps the end of the season alive and we’re really excited about the finals.

“When we put all the different factors and considerations into the mix, it’s the right model when we talk about rewarding the right teams, keeping the fans at the forefront and providing preparation time into the final, we are very comfortable with it.”
Dobson said scheduling and venue considerations meant the Melbourne Derby could not be played any earlier in the season.
“There is a whole range of considerations in the scheduling, the availability of the MCG through Boxing Day Test, the ability to spread home games across the season, so that the clubs can maximise the accessibility of the games,” Dobson said.
“That’s just the way that it fell this year and we think it’s going to be a massive game either way.”

5 team finals series in an 8 team league is absolutely ridiculous. The integrity of making the finals is slightly tarnished in the pursuit of a couple of extra dollars in revenue through viewership, sponsors etc. Poor decision,

looks like they have followed the IPL and scheduled at least 1 game per day (excluding Xmas) , congrats on that

5 teams out of 8 being rewarded with finals , not convinced about that

now to get some class OS players

oh and how about making a "window" so that our own players can actually participate for the majority of the comp , most other domestic T20's leagues around the world manage to do this easily enough.

Melbourne Renegades re-sign English bowler Harry Gurney as clubs turn their focus to signing internationals players for BBL|09.

Gurney is just the sixth overseas player signed on for BBL|09, alongside English trio Jos Buttler (Sydney Thunder), Jofra Archer (Hobart Hurricanes) and Tom Curran (Sydney Sixers) and Afghan duo Rashid Khan (Adelaide Strikers) and Mohammad Nabi (Renegades).

England’s national players, particularly all-format stars like Buttler and (potentially) Archer may not be available for large chunks of the tournament due to England’s tour of South Africa (December 26 - February 16)

Oh wow new finals format. So if I understand it correctly, basically means if you were to win the title from 4th or 5th spot you'll need to win 4 games in a row! (A bit like the doggies in 2016) :O

Yep, could potentially win the whole lot after ending the home and away season with more losses than wins (Heat last season finished 5th with a record of 6W 7L).

The break down of percentages of winning under this system is fourth and fifth needing to win 4 knockout finals in a row face exactly same task Doggies did. That is a 6.25% chance of winning four games in a row.
3rd team has 12.5% chance and the top two teams each have 37.5% chance of winning the title. The same chance the minor premier used to have in the final five system in football of 1972 to 1990.

BB finals before this had teams from 1st to 4th all needing to win just two knockout finals with each team a 25% chance of winning title.

The changes increase first and second winning, reduce chances of 3rd wining it and very hard for 4th and 5th team.
4th team has gone from 25% chance to 6.25% chance with change of finals system
5th team has gone from 0% chance to 6.25% chance by being including in the finals system.

The overall thing to look at is top two way better rewarded and during the prelim stages keeps slim hopes alive of 6th and 7th involved for longer.

I really like the idea of high density of games in the final few days to determine finalist. With a final five it should mean most teams are still alive going into that weekend and I can see that being pretty exciting.

However the finals design strikes me as odd. They could have rewarded the top 2 by simply moving to a conventional final 4 approach of 2 semis, a prelim and a grand final. This would give a double chance to top 2.

If they wanted to go final 5 then the old AFL final five would have made more sense I think. In that top gets direct passage to 2nd semi and 2v3 and 4v5. You then have 2 semis, prelim and the grand final. It would actually give you one more final than this new system.
