For me the other thing to note is that not every rookie has to be a world beater.. A Tobe Watson or a Max King sitting on your bench averaging 50-55 is still doing his job (appreciating in value) given the cheaper starting price.... yes its handy to have high scoring rookies as backup but in reality they are just there to make you $$$
Balta showed how well those slow burners can be..!

Some interesting comments from Simmo. B.William's name mentioned first in the discussion (probably reading too much into it). Brander needs a good intraclub performance to lock in that wing role. Also massive alarm bells for anyone considering NN..

Jake Waterman – who played both Marsh Community Series matches – is in the frame with Allen "more unlikely than likely".

The 21-year-old Allen will play in Friday's match simulation that will consist of an hour-long hitout after training drills are completed.

Despite Naitanui having his best pre-season in recent memory, the Eagles will still require a second ruck to fill the void when the 29-year-old big man rests.

He played 51 per cent of game time in the Eagles' first Marsh Series match and 58 per cent in the second fixture against the Dockers last week.

"This is the first year where he's had nine weeks (of training) … we've managed his loads but the base is there," Simpson said.

"In terms of when he needs a rest, he probably will and his body will tell us, rather than (planning and saying), 'Righto, round five you won't play'.

"It's a unique position for us. You've got the (Todd) Goldstein type (at North Melbourne) who can ruck all day, and you just need a pinch-hit forward.

"We don't need that with Nic, we need a forward who can play 50 minutes in the ruck.

"That's why in the past we've played a (Scott) Lycett, a (Nathan) Vardy, even a Cal Sinclair.

"Bailey Williams, Nathan Vardy, Tom Hickey and Oscar Allen are all options we're working through.

"It's on form and then what are the best dynamics of our forward line.

"If you've got five smalls that are quick and zippy, maybe you can play the two big ruckmen, that's an interesting one. I'm not locked away on that."

Simpson added that Friday's session would go a long way to proving whether Jarrod Brander assumes the wing role vacated by Chris Masten.

That's exactly why I've been big on Williams (for quite a while now)... getting first crack at the spot, and it seems Simmo agrees with me, lol

Out of Hickey, Vardy & Williams... Williams is by far the most natural forward, followed by Vardy and then Hickey a very clear third.

If Williams gets through the intra-club on Friday, I would expect him to play round 1. He just gives us a different look up forward rather than just sticking a big ruckman in the goal square. Williams is good on the lead and can leap with the best of them.

Yep, I can see why he's being so strongly considered even despite his hammy concern so close to R1. Strong argument to take him at R3 or D8 even if he just misses out in Round 1 as he is probably likely to come in soon.

I think you can pretty much rule out Young for a surprise R1 selection

https://www.afl.com.au/news/384673/applause-for-freo-trio-as-injured-stars-get-back-on-track

First-year defender Hayden Young continued to have his loads managed, starting the session away from the main group and stretching before a high-intensity running session that finished after roughly an hour.
From another perspective

With cruelly-timed injuries to Blake Acres and Stephen Hill in the past week adding to an already long casualty list, chief executive Simon Garlick has urged the club’s youngsters to seize the day before the senior players are ready to return.

“We want to build an environment where players can come in, play a role, be incredibly enthusiastic and desperate and do what we need them to do,” Garlick said.

“I think we’ve seen that in evidence. If that’s something that we can maintain and continue…whilst we get the likes of a Mundy and a Pearce and a Wilson back, then I think we’ll be really well placed.”

None of that trio will be available for next Saturday’s season-opener against Essendon at Marvel Stadium. Fremantle will also be without Acres (hamstring), Hill (quad), Switkowski (back), Jesse Hogan (personal leave) and Joel Hamling (ankle).

Top draft pick Hayden Young is yet to re-join main training three weeks after suffering a thigh injury and is unlikely to be considered for a round one debut.

The No.7 draft pick, whose kicking has impressed during the summer, is moving well and is likely to debut early in the campaign.

Young could make his first appearance in a WAFL pre-season fixture for Peel against West Perth in Joondalup on March 21, the same day the Dockers begin their season in Melbourne.

Midfielder Caleb Serong and defender Tobe Watson remain in contention to earn an AFL debut against the Bombers.

I always think that TOG for a rookie in the preseason is a good indication of getting a good opportunity in the early season. Looking at those bottom price <$124K, there is only 3 who had average TOG% over the two Marsh games of over 60% and had two scores over 40 points. Those are Pickett, Toby Watson, Ben Davis. If you open this up to <$170K that brings in Ben Crocker, Tom Green, Brandon Starcevich and Jarrod Brander. In the $170K-$220K range you had Brendon Zerk-Thatcher, Lachlan Ash, Zac Guthrie, Tyson Stengle and Callum Colman-Jones. Matthew Rowell sits just outside this with 62% TOG and one score of 36.
