I've always considered Hurley to be a viable pick, but have generally stopped short of picking him. For sure he's capable of a 100+ average and providing a decent stream of tons, but for one reason or another, whether injury, team circumstance or form, he seems to lack consistency. As he's almost 30 I'm inclined to steer clear of him. Be interested to hear the Essendon fellas views on him.

Any interest in Michael Hurley?
if Essendon continue to run and gun from defence it hurts him...he excels at playing kick to kick with his fellow defenders.
he's a quality player though and will have big games but consistency is an issue.

injury history isn't fantastic either.

40 pages in and I am still not comfortable picking someone to sit in D1 ahead of Docherty....

Lloyd, Houli too expensive
hurn too old
Zwilliams and Stewart too injured
Rampe spike year?
Laird - Smith and Milera
Rich no
Newman No
Ryan, no Pearce or Hamling, too much uncertainty?
Sicily - too much uncertainty around their defensive make up?
Vlastuin and Salem - no
Houston - round 10 bye
Crisp - maybe?
etc

Anyone got any advice for me?

possibly if any doubt then why not go with none of them but use the funds and go higher in a different line for good scoring players.

I currently have Laird at D1 and Sicily at D2 with Doc at D3. Not comfortable with it right now because of the reasons you have raised. My gut feel is Crisp and B. Smith, but who knows?

Based on your list and concerns, I say go with Crisp then. Surely his disposal can’t get any worse so he has to represent value and therefore be a good chance to get in to the top 6 defenders?

Just pick cash cows from D2 if named. If you absolutely like no-one that is. It would allow a deeper midfield where rookies are thin.

Docherty , Roberton , Noble , Ash , BZT + 3 (if named) almost appears to be the cookie cutter starting defence.

Having the same dilemna , Laird & Sicily were the two I was looking at but both have question marks against them as well , Laird seems the "safest" option of all those you have listed though.
