I think it's just that Sharp played in the AAMI series match instead of Smith so perhaps Sharp is slightly ahead in the pecking order.

I think one of them gets named and will be a good pick.
I don't know why but I am really confident he plays round 1, particularly with Rayner injured. I think we get at least one of Sharp and Smith and I am thinking of taking both so one of them may always be a great DPP donut! haha

I'd definitely advise against doing that, it's very possible that Mathieson or CEY gets the spot instead. I think Smith was given a shot at Robinson's spot and didn't really grab it with both hands, and then Robinson looked better than he did for most of last season in second match. For Smith or Sharp to play, one of Bailey, Robinson or Berry would need to spend less time on the wing and more time forward.

Yeah I think Mathieson probably gets the Rayner spot

It's not a case of being ahead of the pecking order so much as them being in separate pecking orders.

We don't have anyone like Sharp.

We have several with similar strengths as Smith, e.g. Robertson, CEY, Matheson.

Alastair Clarkson has floated the idea of the Hawks blooding up to three debutants in the club's Round 1 clash against Essendon on Saturday night.

Jacob Koschitzke, Tyler Brockman and Connor Downie were the three youngsters who impressed most in the AAMI Community Series win over North Melbourne.

Koschitzke and Brockman combined for nine goals in the side's victory, while Downie picked up 17 disposals.

“I’d expect there to be two or three," Clarkson told SEN Breakfast.

"Young Koschitzke and Brockman had 15 scoring shots between them against North Melbourne two weeks ago.

“They’re going to be right in the mix to play and for our supporters it’s really exciting because supporters haven’t seen anything of Brockman because he hasn’t been on our list and Koschitzke’s had an up and down couple of years on our list with injuries and whatnot.”

I thought that given Smith wasn’t even in the side vs Gold Coast that his chances of a round 1 debut are very slim and someone else would replace Rayner

My reading between the lines on his comments here and immediately after the practice game are that Brockman and Koschitzke are likely and Downie more unlikely than likely.

I’d like to know, did the Lions (and Suns) reserves/players not selected play a practice match the same day or over the same weekend ?

Is it possibly the Lions wanted someone like Smith (who maybe is the 23rd player) to play a full game in the reserves match, rather than sit on the bench for 3/4s and then get a brief run ?

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson has revealed the AFL’s potential introduction of a concussion sub this season is likely to require that the sub be no older than 21 years, in an effort to help blood young players while protecting those who suffer head knocks.

I think Downie would be the hawks prime candidate to be the hawks concussion sub.

MATTHEW LOKAN: Miles Bergman and Lachie Jones will both come under consideration for selection (debut) after showing in the preseason that they can play at the level.

Hamish (Hartlett) and Todd (Marshall) both got through training on the weekend and we expect them to be available for selection.
You'd have to think that Bergman is the better chance considering tog and performance in the aami game.

The further complication with this is, will teams name their specific 22’s the day before the game, plus their specific concussion sub (if it is introduced)?

Or will they name 23 players the day before (say 5 on the bench), and not specifically indicate their concussion sub?

An absolute nightmare already with teams, now probably through in the concussion sub.

What are your thoughts on Sharp and Smith's round 1 prospects?
I think Sharp is unlikely. I think he got a game as a sub because he was more along than expected, and probably would've spelt Birchall or Rich who wouldn't need a full game if it wasn't for Rayner's injury. If you looked at the subs, Adams would be in the picture but Ballenden and Madden wouldn't be pushing for senior games early either - it's more they've had good preseasons and maybe this was their reward.

Smith is one of a number of options who could come in for Rayner. Last year it went CEY > Matheson > Robertson > Smith. This year, Smith and Robertson have been talked up in the preseason but who knows what Fagan wants when push comes to shove. I'm just waiting to see.

Given the side against the Gold Coast was 22 + 4, and the subs were Sharp, Adams, Ballenden (didn't come on) and Madden (didn't come on), I can't see who you think is Rayner's replacement from that four.

The reserves teams played a full game before the seniors. As above, given the names included as subs I don't think Fagan took that part really seriously and preferred to focus on his best 22.

Yep, mentioned exactly this in the general discussion thread. Really hoping that if the concussion sub is introduced then we find out who the sub is when the teams are announced the evening before they play.

Also, we will need to know whether a concussion sub player who is NOT subbed on will count as a DNP or a zero.

This is just from the lions BF board so don't know how strong the source was but they said a Reserves game was played Monday - the limited comments were 'CEY was best on, Ely also impressive' no mention of Mathieson or others really

Not taking SC into consideration the most logical think to do is either be able to name any sub, or sub on any of your emgs. Whoever gets subbed out strictly misses the 12 days so it's used for legitimate concussions.
