Quick Thoughts - Swans vs Giants
General - I watched this one so no one else has to, what an ugly game, Giants the better side for the majority and should have won by a lot more. Just stagnant ugly football, neither team brought any pressure and neither team showed much in the way of composure, just a lot of hacking the ball around. From a SC perspective this was a genuinely baffling game, the players who were best in the last were all punished for it despite the game being on the line until after the siren, it was honestly like they got the "junk time" and "crunch time" buttons mixed up.
Swans - Were really bad, kicking for goal almost saved them (as much the Giants awful kicking as anything) but pressure was well off AFL standard and ball use was wasteful for the most part, looked more like last year's Swans, in fact looked exactly like last year's Swans, yielding into the defensive 50 and prodding around not really interested in advancing.
Mills - Brutal ratio, was the best Swan in the 4th trying to drag the side home and was genuinely good all game, absolutely no justification for his ratio for mine and I'm a non-owner!
Lloyd - Kind of the opposite, his ratio was fair enough through the first 3 quarters but he went missing in the 4th with the game on the line and was genuinely rewarded for it because of the CD enigma kicking in. He was actually solid and the 1:1 was fair enough but compared to the guys who genuinely impacted the game, baffling.
Franklin - Massive game, kicked so straight which was the key.
Reid - Went into the ruck late after Hickey's injury and was combative, terrible hitout to setup Kelly's game winner though, when you've got the lead you don't hit it to the outside space, rucking 101.
Hayward - The ultra rare very good game by him, was dynamic and dangerous as a forward, still needs to do more without the ball but he actually was good for a change!
Dawson - Clangers just stuffed him, was so good early but just made some bad decisions and his ruckwork was costly while Reid was off getting taped up.
Parker - Had a rare mare for him, just couldn't get the ball.
Hickey - Looked like a textbook knee on knee ruck injury, tried to play on but couldn't jump and was then subbed. Lost a nice 10 points for getting injured to boot (which made the crunch time scoring even more baffling for him to be going backwards in parallels to the guys playing well also not scoring). He was great until that point as well which makes it even sadder. He continues my personal dream trade chain of doom, if only I hadn't started Cripps...
Kennedy - He was solid but I didn't think his ratio was right by the end, similar to Lloyd he kind of went missing in the 4th when the game was on the line and seemed to be rewarded for it.
Gulden - Was solid again without anything special.
Warner - Got stuck on the pine a lot which definitely hurt him, especially some moments when he had a chance to score as the game style suited him. Also got stuck forward after Stephens was subbed on as he's a very one position player and had to play midfield basically. Still not terrible but Ward was putting a lot of work into him and he didn't handle it very well.
Campbell - Again was solid but not great, spent an incredible amount of time on the bench, especially in the first half of quarters which were all dominated by the Giants, basically most of his minutes were in the Swans good moments but that's not great for a backman!
Stephens - For a runner he really struggled to add anything after coming on late in the game, there's a player in there but he just doesn't seem to have the confidence to run and demand the ball off senior players which is a really worrying trait.
Giants - Comfortably the better side they really did dominate the contest, they probably should have kicked 20 goals with decent goal kicking and the ball spent most of the game in their control and end. Deserved the win, still some baffling coaching.
Taranto - Another guy whose ratio went to **** for having an impact late in the game, he was great all game and actually used it pretty well, helped he handballed a lot more than normal.
Kelly - Brutal ratio, at least it just changed while I was watching from the horrifically bad scoring he had pre-scaling, he was the best Giant in the 4th and just like Mills, he seemed to go backwards for it after being 1:1 all game. Just kept working it forward and really hard to justify that ratio. Showed how clearly he is their best midfielder when he roved the stoppage flawlessly, sharked Reid's terrible hitout and finished with class to win the game. Still playing predominantly as a forward this game but seemingly defied orders to push a lot higher in the last to change the game.
Mumford - Was really good again although was being well beaten by Hickey prior to his injury and got genuinely worked over around the ground but he kept working, injured him and then took advantage of the backups.
Daniels - Playing a lot of midfield again, mostly at the expense of Kelly. He was alright again but he's not Kelly.
Ward - Was solid again and would expect he had the most CBA again. As solid as he is, he's also not Kelly...
Green - Played really solidly, still a horrific TOG figure.
Ash - Was really solid off half back again, great run and carry and ball use. Going to be a star.
Cumming - Solid, really unlucky that he, like an inverse to Campbell, was stuck off the field every time the Swans got it forward or the Giants did what little waxing they did at half back and thus he only scored limited points, slightly different interchange timing and he probably has 100+. Role still rock solid.
Greene - Could have been anything, he probably should have kicked 7 today, had another 2 shots outside the 1.7 that didn't go down next to his name (one smothered after he shanked it, one touched on the line). Again playing as their defacto FF but such a matchup nightmare.
Stone - Really solid game from him and his role really decent. Haven't heard his name mentioned but he should be on most radars next week, playing as a wing/HF and shows a lot of good traits.
